NES: Delusions of Grandeur

North King said:
We can't exactly say WHERE history diverged, so let's just say a farmer picked a different suitior to marry his daughter to in 3000 BCE in Mesopotamia, causing a whole different series of world events to happen. Make it up as you go along, but as far as I can tell, most of the general world pattern is the same as OTL. There's a few large differences in political entities, but for the most part the powers that be seem roughly the same as they usually would be.

Aye, lets just make it up as we go. Make sure you read other people's stories so they don't overlap tho.

“Senators, peoples of the Democratic Republic of Michigamme, I, Albert Bearclaw, Senator from the Province of Wisconsin, of the Conservative Party, propose legislation to declare a state of open war against the Empire of America.”

Jacob Martell looked up at the charismatic senator with some disgust. The man was mad. It was well and good that the Empire of America had declared war on Mexico, but why should they of Michigamme get involved? Of course, the man was a conservative nutcase, so perhaps that explained it.

“This is necessary, in my humble opinion,” as if he was ever humble, Jacob thought, “because the offending nation, that is to say, the Empire of America, has immediately and without provocation, declared war on the Holy Mexican Empire. While admittedly, they do have grievances against the Empire of Mexico, this does not justify a war of wanton aggression.

“And indeed, if we let the American Empire overrun the Empire of Mexico, there is little telling what they might do. For example, our western friends of the Lakota Federation have been near constantly involved in disputes with this American Empire. If the Mexicans are overrun, the Americans, without fear of a flank attack, may immediately attack them.

“And that’s not even mentioning ourselves! The Empire of America has grievances against us, numerous ones, unjustified, but there nonetheless. I have no doubt that once they defeat the Mexican Empire, then they will turn on us at some point or another. Michilimakinac Point is within reach of their armies. The whole of the Sault province has the danger of being invaded from across Lake Erie, Ontario, and the Ohio River. Wisconsin has a dangerously unguarded flank to the south where Illinois is poised to plunge into it.

“And of course, once America attacks us, Britain will join in the fight; they have no love for us and would dearly like to regain the Hudson Bay all for themselves, the better to invade the Independent Republic of Quebec.

“People of Michigamme, this is our time! Our advisors have suggested that we might be able to defeat the Americans in a few months. All of the Great Lakes are in our grasp! Will you falter in courage? Or will you join me in declaring that the American Empire CANNOT STAND!?”

Cheers rang throughout the hall, but Jacob Martell was not among them. He sourly looked about at his comrades rising and applauding, and reach behind himself to cover his head with the hood of his robe. He rose, and the hall hushed.

“The chair recognizes Jacob Martell of the province of Michilimackinac, Progressive party.”

He cleared his throat and began speaking from where he stood with a loud, clear, ringing voice.

“My comrade from Wisconsin raises a good point. American aggression does threaten us.” Murmurs raced through the hall. He was known as THE pacifist. Why would he suddenly advocate war? “But this is no reason to march to war ourselves.” The murmuring stopped. “War heaped on war does us little good. Isn’t it ironic that to prevent war, my comrade calls for war? Calls for the same war as he supposedly is wanting to avoid, as a matter of fact.” A few chuckles rose here and there, but most continued their listening silently.

“People of Michigamme, what, exactly, would a war gain us at this time? Nothing. We would send off thousands to die. Indeed, we would kill thousands of their men, but to little purpose. We would perhaps gain a little more land to be fought over during the next war, but why does this matter? No, we should not enter this war, the only one to gain from it would be the arms manufacturers.

“People of Michigamme, I ask that you stand up for the right, and OPPOSE THIS SENSELESS WAR!”

He sat down, pleased with the applause. However, he noticed that the applause he had garnered was rather less than that which Bearclaw had generated.

A few more hours of debate followed, and then by the end of the day, it had not yet come to a vote. It was to be decided tomorrow.

He walked with the long file of Senators leaving the room. He mentally calculated in his head. There were 28 Conservatives in the Senate. 24 Nationalists. His thoughts momentarily turned to the disgusting Nationalists, and he mentally flamed them for a little while, then returned to the matter at hand. 40 Progressives, thank all the gods. 8 Independents. He could count on the Progressives to vote against it... and the Nationalists and Conservatives to vote for it. Damn them, they would have 52 supporters they could count on.

There was only one option. Filibuster.

Attached is how I envision the world at this point. Add or remove territories to your nation as you see fit.

NK, is that big green blob in SE Asia supposed to be me? If so, you forget that it is Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Eastern Burma.

Michigamme. The word echoed in his head. Bitter memories of the Great Lakes War flooded his mind. The current news reports indicated that much of the Michigamman Senate favored joining the Mexican war, against the Americans. This infuriated Lincoln, who already held a grudge against the northerners. If its war they want, then its war they will get.

“Joshua!” he yelled, and quickly a man appeared in the room. “Prepare my carriage. I should like a meeting with the British embassy.”

“Yes, Mr. President.”

Wait, so every week is a year... Does that mean we define the start of the year by the start of the NES's day? Or every Sunday we start a new year? Or every monday? I have to figure out if it is summer or late fall.

Nation Name: Empire of Japan
Age: Early Industrial
Army: Medium (Well Trained, Men fight to the death, fanatical)
Navy: Large (Nothing partically outstanding)
Government: Divine Emporer, Meiji Kieto. Prime Minister, Sachi Hayabusa
Religion: Shinto (56%), Zen Buddist (40%), Christianity (4%)
Economy: Merchantile, Industrial, Urban

Description:

Ever since the Meiji Restoration, the great opening of Japan's borders the Japanese people have floushied, thrived on the incoming trade from all over the World. Japanese made goods are of high quality, and are highly sought over the world, even if the cost is a bit higher than lower qaulity made goods. Through the rapid increase of trade coming from the Meiji restoration Japan has grown into a power in the East, easily rivaling the European powers with her industrialised cities, and modern army and navy.

The Divine Emporer still reigns supreme, but even that now is waning in the face of new ideas. A Prime minister was recentaly appointed from the noble class to reign where ever the Emporer cannot. Parties are begining to form all over the country, yet still the people pay their respect to the Emporer, their noble tradiation.

The Japanese army, after being weakened from the lack of trade and technological advancements has become a modern, well trained force once more. Taking the more useful aspects of the Bushido to heart, this soldiers hold little fear, and follow orders without question unless faced with a better prospect. The Navy is also more modern, although it is nothing special. Its soldiers are very brave, but in this more modern age the Navy does not board enemy ships, so that is mostly moot point. Still, the Japanese war machine has room to grow.

Now, the Divine Emporer looks to increase his nation's great glory...

The Japanese Emporer sat with the English ambassador in the Imperial palace. The servant poured a herbal tea into the Emporer's cup and bowed, quickly pouring tea into the Ambassador's cup. Waiting a moment for the servant to taste the tea to make certain of no foul play, the Emporer merely sat. After the servant bowed, and left, the Emporer took a sip of tea, and sighed. The English Ambassador coughed nervously, before gathering up his courage to speak.

The Emporer spoke first, "I understand that my ambassador came across as a bit to violent, yes?" The English ambassador let out a sigh he didn't know he was holding, before responding to the Emporer's question. "Yes, it did seem as through Japan wished to fight with the English for control of our Asian colonies. We hope that is certainly not the case, since our navy is very powerful in this region."

"Of course", the Emporer smiled, "we understand that fully. We merely wish to create a prosperous united Asian Empire, and we are willing to use force to do so. We of course would avoid force if the oppurtunity presented it self, which is why we have contacted the English. We wish to remain on favorable relations with the Queen."

The Ambassador nodded at the Emporer's reasoning, and thought carefully before he spoke his next words. "We too wish to remain on peaceful relations with your country, your highness. What is the real reason of calling me here then, if I may ask? We both know that peaceful relations and trade suit us."

The Emporer smiled a crafty smile before answering, "An offer. An offer of an alliance to, ah, educate the peaceful Republic. We split the spoils, and then Japan buys England's share for a resonable price. They are Asian afterall. We would also allow the English to have full port acess to all our colonies, and we expcet the same from you."

A slow smile spread across the Ambassador's face, "I think we may have a deal. I'll send this back home, and, it should be favorable for all involved."

The Emporer's smile almost split his face, "Good."

I've taken the liberty to create various empires around SE Asia and drew up a map of things as they stand. I hope everyone is cool with it: -

Legend
Maroon - Federated Malay States
Yellow - Republic of Peace
Scarlet - British Enclave (Acheh is geographical name)
Brown - Various minor petty kingdoms
Dark Blue - Bugis Empire
Lime Green - Dutch Enclave (Pontianak is the closest town from memory)
Dark Green - Brunei
Orange - Sulu Sultanate
Magenta - French Enclave (no idea what this island is called)
Light Blue - Spanish Phillipines
White Borneo - Dense jungle, populated by fierce Dayak warrior tribes who amongst other things, headhunt for enjoyment.

Story coming in a few hours.

An updated world map-

Lets say France retained her monarchy, and an attempt at revolution failed.

An Imperial Order to Begin renewed Campaigns in India
Presented to the Most Honorable Governor-General of India Station,

It has come to my attention,
that over the years, our presence in India has become quite lax. This, coupled with the increased presence of the French within the sub-continent has slowly chipped away at British influence. Therefore, I am authorizing you, Governor-General of India and guardian of the crown possesions in the far east, to begin renewed campaigns to secure British interests within the regions of India.

We understand that such campaign will require extra forces on your part, so upon orders of the War department, a fleet shall be requisitioned to be kept within your ports.

3 Battleships and 10 Steamships shall leave dock within hours of the dispatch of this telegraph, includingl as a healthy force of Crown regulars.

- His Majesty King William V of the United Kingdom of England, Scotland, and Ireland

The Royal British Colony of India
Age: Late Industrial
Army: Small (semi-independant, doesnt include newest British reinforcements. Mix of indigenous Indians and Brits)
Navy: Small (1 battleship and some steamships, nothing very special. Doesnt include newest British reinforcements.)
Government: Monarchy
Religion: Anglican Christianity & Hinduism
Economy: Mainly trade based, except for the industrial center at Bombay.

Description:

Part of the British Empire since the 1500's, the India colony is one of the most prized jewels in the entire Empire. Its sized declined somewhat over the centuries as French and other Indian states began encroaching, first with the Indian Wars of the 1750's and later in the early 1800's as the colony erupted into revolt and rebellion in the bloody Delhi Revolution. The British did not feel like persuing a long, tough war against the Indians and allowed for an independant state to be created out of most of British India.

Now, though, the order has come directly from King Wilhelm himself. India is to be re-conquered, with the rifle. Is the weakened colony ready for such a task?

Bananna, no European colonies there yet, please. After all, we're all in the industrial revolution and that means we have the ability to resist European colonization.
