NES: Delusions of Grandeur

They are enclaves.. For my part of the world, the Dutch did do a bit of imperial stuff. We kicked most of them out, hence the small amounts of enclaves.

Play with your own part of SE Asia, mate.. You have a Japanese invasion to prepare against.. :p

But seriously, instead of giving Europe such extensive powers over the region, I only gave them tiny enclaves (blame Paint for not allowing smaller sizes).

To the (king, prime minister, emperor?) of Persekutuan Negeri-Negeri Melayu.

Greetings from your humble neighbor to the north. There has long been a veil of mistrust and perhaps hatred between our two peoples. Rest assured, the Republic of Peace seeks no quarrel with you or any of our neighbors. We wish to co-exist in the minimum, and live in harmony at the maximum. We do not wish for strife or armed conflict, but we will ensure that our people can live in serenity.

As a sign of goodwill and friendship, we want to send a group of exchange students to visit your schools and share our culture for a period of one year. These students were handpicked because they best represented our ideas and values. All of our children are educated by state-funded institutions, but we feel that this group will best serve as a bridge between our two cultures. We hope you accept this proposal and also hope to be a gracious host to students from Melayu.

Sincerely,
Anh Minh

Damnit, can't I play as a peaceful nation for once?!

OOC: It sucks, I'm aware. It's 11 PM, I'm tired. :p

The day dawned cold and clear in Calumet, late 1898. Jacob snorted as soon as this thought occurred to him. A day that didn’t dawn cold late in the year was something to be mentioned. Outside the snow piled in drifts of 10 feet right next to the badly plowed city streets. He laughed. Just another day in the land that is Michigamme’s capital.

He exited the house about thirty minutes after waking, making his way for the tall, domed sandstone capital building in the center of the city. Just about everything was sandstone here, but the dome was unusual. Mainly because there was a danger of snow pileup, but the copper sheet that made up the roof sloped to form a triangle on which the dome was situated, so it didn’t collapse in upon itself... often.

The building was packed when he arrived there, which raised an eyebrow. This early, few would be around, except for those who were filibustering this damned war legislation. Unless...

He hurried inside, and cornered the nearest Progressive he could find. As it turned out, it was the party whip, John T. Redriver.

“Martell!” the Senator cried out. “We were wondering when you’d show. They’ve got it, Jacob.” His eyes were hollow, dark circles prominent under his eyes.

“Got what?” Jacob asked hesitantly, but he already knew.

“They’ve got enough to break the filibuster and put it to a vote,” John said, confirming Jacob’s suspicions.

“Aw, damn,” he swore.

“There’s little we could do. I hear the Independents are getting sick of our voices, and even a few Progressives are sick of this delay.” John grimaced a little. “Five days, Jacob. We’ve managed to hold off war for five days. And despite our best efforts, the Republic is going to war.”

They entered the main chamber gloomily. Other Senators were filing in around them as well. All 100 were here, as a matter of fact. They shuffled around a while, and murmured conversations to each other, but Jacob was silent as stone.

Finally, the Chair entered. He, too, was a Progressive, and he looked like he was nearly in tears. Jacob felt that way himself.

“People of Michigamme, a petition has been brought to me, signed by 62 Senators, to bring the current legislation to a vote. Thus...” he trailed off distractedly, “We’ll, ah... vote.”

It took very little time, as each senator stood up and announced his intentions. Jacob grew sadder with each voice that added to the clamor for war. Some surprises were there, like the 7 Progressives who voted for war. 7!

The Chair gloomily called for order again. “With a majority of 64 for, 33 against, and 3 abstaining, the legislation passes. The Democratic Republic of Michigamme declares war on the Empire of America.”

It was December 7, 1898.

To: Anh Minh,

Assalamualaikum.

The past history of our peoples cannot be easily forgotten or paved over. However, we can try to forgive as is the right thing to do.

Your ideas of exchanging students are interesting. We would like you to understand, though, before making any commitments, that the Melayu system of education has Islamic elements - and hope you would accept us educating your students with our techniques, as we would expect yours to teach our students.

Also, we would like to request that your Republic officially renounce your claims of suzerainty over our northern states of Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu - which was paying tribute to the defunct Siamese kingdom.

Your faithful servant,

El Emperador Está Muerto
The Emperor Is Dead

Crowds of people had been gathering anxiously around the Imperial Palace in Mexico City. From the balcony, stepped Padre Juan Pedro, the Emperor's most trusted Cardinal. In a solemn voice, he spoke into the microphone, "The Emperor is dead."
A collective wail of lamentation went up among the crowd. When the sobs and wails subsided, Juan Pedro continued. "In addition to the death of our beloved Emperor, the demonic Empire of America has declared war upon us." Yet another collection of screams, this time of rage, fear, and indignation. When the mass of enraged and frightened citizens quited, he continued once more, "In this trying time, we must look to God, for all this was his part of his divine will. But, this is a time of war, and The Holy Mexican Empire needs a leader. Someone who shall protect the sanctity of our country, someone who will keep the American devils from defiling our beautiful nation, someone who is a true Mexican. As you know, it was the dying wish of our great Emperor for his daughter to take the throne. Citizens of Mexico, welcome your new Queen, La Emperatriz, Maria Juanita Dicente La Segunda!."
The promise of a new leader emboldend the masses. Shouts rose from the crowd, "Viva Mexico! Viva La Emperatriz!, Long live Mexico! Long live the Empress!". The deafening roar continued for another ten minutes.
Finally Maria Juanita spoke her first words as Empress, "Fellow countrymen, in this time of sadness we must face the reality of war. Men of Mexico, kiss your wives goodbye and hug your children, for all abled bodied men are needed for the Holy Imperial Army! The American devils wish to seize the lands of southern Texas, they say they wish to free the Texans but that is a lie, they wish to steal as much land from us as they can! If we lose Texas, what's next to fall? California, Arizona, possibly even Mexico herself?! Fellow Mexicans, you must fight for what is right and true! Fight not for yourself, but for all of Mexico!."
The Empress' speech rallied the disheartened Mexicans, they erupted into a massive cheer. Some screamed war cries, others yelled support for their new ruler.
.......................

Later, in the conference room of the Imperial Palace, Empress Maria sat in her fathers throne at the head of the conference table. "Your highness," spoke one of the cardinals who acted as her advisors, "the American Empire is using the liberation of Texas as a ploy. They wish to free the Texans and then annex their territory, this isn't a war for freedom this is a war for land!"
The Empress mulled this over for a while before she began, "Do we have any support from foreign nations? Although I do not doubt the strength of our armies, it would be nice to have some sort of insurance."
Another cardinal replied, "Yes, a courier recently informed us that the Republic of Michigamme seems to share our distaste for the Americans, also, the Lakota Federation has had a less than friendly record with the American Empire."
"This is good, very good. Send a messenger to the Lakotas to discuss their possible position in this war. Well, if there is no other pressing issues then--"
The first Cardinal cut off the Empress, "There is one, possibly insignificant issue. If Americans go to the British, and ask for help, than that could severely reduce our chances of coming out of this war without any loss of territory."
The Empress gave the Cardinal a cold look for interrupting her, and then continued, "Fine, send an ambassador to the English embassy in British Honduras. Now leave, I need time to reflect on these issues."
"Yes your majesty."
....................

Once Maria was certain that the Cardinals were out of earshot, the Empress broke down in tears. The stress caused by her father's death, the thought of war, and the strain of gaining control of a country had finally taken its toll on the young woman of 24. After composing herself, the Empress vowed to never lose controll like this again. She vowed that she would die before seeing her beloved Mexico in the hands of foreigners. When the Empress left the conference room, she was a new woman. Gone was the girlish innocence, in its place was the cool confidence of a hardened Ruler.

OOC: Sorry I was so long in responding, this is the first time I had access to a computer. And yes, yes, I know that the picture is of the spanish queen, Isabella of Castile.

I hope you don't mind another player! I see you haven't reached 15 players, so I'm going to post the stat thing. If you don't want any more players, just ignore this. I'm keeping with the Bourbon monarchy, since Insane Panda stated the revolution failed.

Kingdom of France

Nation: The Kingdom of France, or just plain France.
Age: Late-Industrial
Army: Medium (Good sized, but not overly large. 1/3 is composed of men from predominant noble families in France, who are trained in modern european tactics, while the rest of the army composes of poorly trained conscripts with out of date rifles and equipment)

Navy: Small (Mainly composed of ironclads, with 2 battleships and a few transports. Many decades of peace and stability have made the French navy small and nearly useless compared to other european nations)

Government: Absolute Monarchy

Religion: State religion is Protestantism (Huegnots), but there is a Catholic majority in the nation.

Economy: Out of date mercantilist system, but is known for it's fine exports of wines and other luxery liquors.

Description: The French revolution of 1789 was harshly put down by the Bourbon monarchs, and the absolute monarchy was sparred. Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette continued their luxerous spending, but soon drastic reforms came when the king died in 1817 and his son, Louis XVII took the throne. Reforms were brought throne France to heal the economic depression which had struck the peasants, and royal credit(Known as "Le Royale Credite" in French) was created to give money to peasants who could not make enough. "Le Royale Credite" was the first known welfare in Europe.

During Louis XVII's reign, France held a stable peace and slowly grew economically, to become one of Europe's industrial centers following the Industrial revolution. Colonization of Africa, Asia, and the growth of Franco-Quebecia also was rampant in the reign of Louis XVII, dubbed the "Second Sun King". In 1860, Louis XVII was killed by an anarchist, leaving the French throne to his infant(born in 1858) named Louis XVIII. A regency headed the royal court schooled the to-be king, and in 1890 Louis XVIII took the throne.

I will post a story tomorrow.

The cannons opened fire, the longest ranging cannons in the world, as American cavalry charged against the small Mexican force huddled in the valley. The cavalry, equipped with both rifles and swords, quickly surrounded the Mexicans, and laid waste to the forces. No prisoners were taken.

Samuel brought his horse to a stop near the company corral. While his horse quickly begin lapping up water, he dismounted and began to help pick up the dead bodies. Most of the men killed were old Mexican men, but occasionally Sam came about a boy that seemed no older then fourteen. He then recognized a young boy he had shot during the battle. His chest was ripped open, and blood thoroughly coated the grass around him, but in a way he seemed peaceful. Saying a quick prayer, Sam continued to pile the bodies in a quickly dug ditch.

The American army had already won countless battles against the Mexicans. It was obviously apparent this early that the Mexican army was much less trained and worse equipped then their American counterparts, and without a strong railroad basis, was for the most part immobile. This also kept the Mexicans from quickly resupplying or reinforcing positions under attack by American forces. American general Robert E. Lee knew all of this, and played it to the best of his advantage. The Americans were easily winning the war, but there seemed to be a speed bump put in place. Michigamme of the north has become to be annoying to the Americans, and their declaration of war was nothing to be ignored.

Americans outnumbered the Michigammens almost two to one, but they were no Mexicans. The Michigamme Army was well trained and industrialized, and on the defense would be very strong to break. Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the northern forces, knew this. And so his best bet was to defend himself. The attacker would be playing against the odds, and Grant definitely was in no hurry to fight against the odds.

Meanwhile, back in Washington, President Lincoln eagerly awaited the response to the messenger he sent to the Queen in London. He needed to know if the Queen would support a war against the Michigamme and regain her popular Hudson colony. As of now, there had been no response.

"Your highness, it may be in our best interests to relinquish control of Texas to the Americans. Our men are being destroyed, the American devils are just too strong." Said Padre Juan Pedro.
Outraged that the Priest could say such a thing, the Empress responded, "NO! I would have every man in the country die in combat before I ceded one inch of land to those monsters!"
Juan Pedro continued, "With all due respect, this war was a mistake to begin with. Your father had done many things to make Mexico a better place, but he did not forsee a war, and thus, our army is pathetic, at best. It would benefit the entire country to avoid anymore conflict."
"Padre, I know you believe that peace is our only way out, but you forget that we have the help of Michigamme, even if our troops fail in battle, we always have the help of our Northern Allies." The tired Empress let out a sigh, "Only if our allies fail us, and only then, shall we even consider ceding land to the American devils."
"That is a fair compromise." said Juan Pedro, he turned and left for the Cathedral.
...................

In the Cathedral, Padre Juan Pedro lit several candles, crossed himself, and began to pray.
Dear God, Father who art in Heaven, Hear my Prayer, If it is in your divine will, please enter the heart of the Empress, make her realize how she is hurting all of Mexico with her foolish stuborness. I beg of thee, Dear Lord, our men are dying, widows are made everyday, the night air is filled with children crying for their fathers, brothers, and cousins. End this war Almighty God, bring peace to our Devout Catholic Nation.
Amen.

Paris, France - Versailles Palace

Louis XVIII sat in his hall, his many ministers with him. Louis was glad it was quiet, he never enjoyed the endless parties in Versailles, but merely did it to show his wealth. But at the moment Louis had a job to do: lead the French people! Louis turned to his foreign minister.

"How fares the Mexican's war against America, dear minister?" The monarch asked his foreign minister. It was common news around the world to hear of the second Texan war, between The Empire of America and the Mexican empire.

"The Americans are attacking Texas, but I don't know how strong or how well they are doing." The minister told Louis, totally unaware of Franco-Quebecia, which was in North America.

"Those greedy Americans could declare war on us, in order to take Franco-Quebecia! That is one of our rich industrial spots, and we cannot afford to lose it to the Americans." Louis XVIII told his minister, and the minister, as well as the many others nodded.

"So shall we declare war sir?" The foreign minister asked.

"Yes."

---------

The Next Day

Paris, France - The Bastille

Surrounding the Bastille was a parade of fun and games, set up by the king himself. Everyone knew it was easier to wage war if you kept your civilian population well fed and happy. Louis XVIII was going to uphold that bargain. With a microphone in hand, Louis began his speech to his people.

"Dearest people! 110 years ago, in this spot..the French revolution began. It was put down, and the French monarchy survived! We have florished, yet there is someone could threatens our security. It is the Empire of America! It battles Mexico to the south, but it could only be due time before they decide to sieze Franco-Quebecia, our industrial heart land! We must strike now at America, and aid the Mexicans all we can!"

It was done: France had declared war on America.

Dear Sultan Yusof Hakin,

Our schools do not indoctrinate children, they are merely a tool for opening their eyes to the endless possibilities of life. We hope that you will keep an open mind with our exchange students. There will be no force-feeding of any kind, if your students do not wish to learn, that is their choice.

As for your territorial request, we do not claim sovereignty over them, they are willing participants and citizens of the Republic. Soldiers do not march through their streets to keep them in line, they are quite capable of living in peace and prosperity without undue influence. There is no more nonsense of tribute, all are equal in the Republic.

Story:

Our sables, our curved sables, clashed.

A diversion, a deception... then the real strike, but it is met. Andrey smiled, yet I saw his sweat. He was nervous.

I cut at him, he jumped back and parried my next strike. Then he lashed out, making me back abit. I cursed myself.

The world did not matter, the palace did not matter, the training room did not matter. My sword; his sword. My hand; his hand. My chest; his chest. Only the two of us and our swords.

I swinged to the right before he could hit me. He turned around quickly, but I by then managed to distance myself from him. Giving me two seconds to rest and think. I needed to catch him, my brother, off balance.

He approached me, still smiling. He felt his superiority, his supremacy. He prepared to cut again... but just as he did, I put my sword forward to stop him and brought my sword's blade to chin.

He gulped, and threw his sword to the floor.

"You won, my brother" - he admitted.

---

I remembered that duel for long since. My brother was close to victory, it seemed, but the tables can always be turned. He was confident that soon, he will win, but it was I who won. He overestimated himself? No. But he took the favorable information for granted.

It was the year of 1898, April 3rd. Our father, Kabalyk I, died the next day from an assassin's bullet.

The Foriegn advisor walked slowing up the steps to the imperial palace. In his hands was a small folder of information, information that could change that face of Japanese history forever. He was quickly ushered in by the gaurds, and sat down at the Emporer's table.

The Emporer seemed...at peace, drinking his tea in the afternoon, his thoughts only on the glorious future he envisioned for his people. Over the past year, his military began to gather, began to grow as more and more young men volenteered and were drafted into his army. The medium sized army had grown into a large one.

Their funds went into increasing production centers, buying weapons, ammunition, and drafting and training the new forces. Just 4 months ago a new officer military training school was built for those who showed appititude at Elementry school, and the new Japanese army and navy were a well oiled machine.

Mock battles, battle manuevers, and target practice were constantly being done, making the Japanese army completely prepared for any battle the Emporer ordered them too. The well-trained Japanese force was prepared for war. The emporer dispelled his thoughts for the time being, there would be another time. He turned to the Foriegn Minister, "Yes?"

"Your highness," the minister nervously began, "I have a report of the happenings of the World." The emporer nodded at the man to continue. "Sir, the Empire of America attacked Empire of Mexico, Michigan declared war on America, and then recently, the begining of this year, did the French declare on America also. It is likely that our allies the English will get involved, and it is not certain whether the Russians will act or not."

The Emporer sat silent for a long moment, thoughts racing through his head. The implications of the French declaring had major repercussions, it was likely that many of the major powers will now get involved in this conflict. "World War...."

"It seems that way, sir." the advisor said. "What should we do? What side should we take?" The emporer looked sharply at the advisor, anger evident on his features. "Side? No, we will not choose a side. We will make our own. If this is too be World War, we will make it so. Gather the military advisors, we will begin this war now, before it comes to us. We will set the terms of our engagements." The man numbly nodded before he relayed the message to the military high command. World War seemed imminent.

****

The Military Advisors gathered around the table, silent. The Prime minister Sachi Hayabusa stood slightly to the left of Emporer Meiji, who sat at the head of the table. The wooden table gleened, and there were many maps, papers and reports laid across it. The Emporer silently stared at the figures containing the troop infromation of his Empire. "Are these figure's correct?" the Emporer asked.

One of military advisors, Haru Kariudo, looked at the figures before answering, "Yes, your highness, that is correct. We have 300,000 men total, althrough it would be best to keep 100,000 at home so that they can finished advanced training. We have 40 Fuji Class Battleships, and 35 of the older Hiei Corvette Class warships. Our fleets, and our troops are ready at anytime, your highness. We are at a state of moblization."

The Emporer looked around him, at the maps, at the battle plans, at the statistics, and he slowly looked down at the piece of paper the Foriegn advisor had given to him early that same morning. It detailed the foriegn wars, and their expected effects, but scrawled at the bottom was the words that had been echoing inside his head for many hours. The Moment is ours, Korea is weak. Mexico is weak. China is weak. What should we do?

"What should we do?" the Emporer asked, voicing his thoughts, his worries. The Advisors looked around for a moment, back to their maps, considering the power of the army, the strength of the Empire.

"We go to war, my lord. Already Korea is in our grasp, thanks to the control of their cabinet we have, we merely need to come in and firmly establish control over it. China will no doubt look to fight us over Korea, and we may be able to draw them into a losing war, and strengthen our Empire that way. Also, the Empire of Mexico will no doubt be tied up from the fight with America, and we can easily use a fast campiagn to overwhelm them, and gain favor with the Americans. We are in a good position. I think we should take advantage of it."

The Emporer, leaned back, sighed, and then looked up. "Do it. Move our forces. We will send 60,000 men to Korea, along with 10 Battleships, and 10 Hiei Corvettes. Send a wire to America, we will fight on their side. Do not formally declare War against the Empire of Mexico and France, yet. We will send 140,000 men with 10 Battleships, and 20 Hei Corvettes towards our Hawaii Colony. From their, we will invade Mexico, and begin the World War in earnest. The rest of our men, will defend Japan from any threat. Go, you have your orders."

As the men left the room, the Emporer did not move. He sat until he was alone in the room, looking forlorning on the maps laid out before him. All of this, would secure his place, no, Japan's place in history. But, why did it feel so horrible? The drum beat of War was a harsh taskmaster, but, why did it feel like he had secured the death of millions? It was of no matter, he would do what was best for Japan, and this War would change the World.

****

It had been 2 months since the Emporer's orders, and the Korean campiagn was procceding smoothly. The Korean army was caught unprepared, and most of the country was under Japanese control. Since the Korean cabinet and King were mere puppets for the Japanese Emporer, several Korean military captians and soldiers had taken control of the capital, the last stronghold of Korea in the face of the Japanese onslaught. The Korean navy was fighting against the numerically superior Japanese fleet, 18 (Japanese Navy) to 7 (Korean Navy).

Thanks to the Sino-Japanese War several years earlier, their were many veterans among the Imperial Navy, making this battle easy for the battle hardened Japanese admirals. The fast firing Japanese guns, and the quick fire torpedo's that managed to hit their marks, the Korean navy soon capilated, and surrendered to the superior Japanese Navy. 1 Japanese Corvette had been sunk, while 3 Korean Corvette class ships had been sunk. The rest were being boarded as the Korean's surrended.

In the city, a fierce gun fight was taking place over control of the center sqaure. Japanese troops rushed through without fear of death, their war cries unsettling the enemy as the Japanese artillery crashed down around them. After several minutes of fierce fighting, the square was under Japanese control. Many of the high ranking Korean officers were killed in the fire fight, and the rest retreated in the main government building. Deciding to rest the troops, the General shelled the building with an artillery strike instead of taking it by regular force. As the building collapsed, the Japanese army cheered in victory.

Korea was now a part of the Japanese empire, and only its capital was extremely damaged at all, thanks to the defiance of the Korean High command.

Total Causalities: 7000 men, 3 Japanese Hiei Class Corvettes

Gains: Korea, 5 Korean Corvettes (Heavily Damaged), 18,000 Korean POWs

April 17th, 1899. Near Petosky, Michilimackinac Territory.

Today was a decent temperature, at least. That was the best thing that could be said for life around Petosky. For the most part the snow had melted, though deep in the woods there were still a few places where you could find it ankle deep. Or knee deep. Or chest deep...

In any particular case, the snow wasn’t around here. Here being a lone railroad track winding it’s way through the groves of massive White Pines. The train slowly chugged along, past rivers, waterfalls, lakes, wolves, deer, and trees. A hell of a lot of trees.

Henri Davout was more than tired of trees. He was to the point where he was tempted to shoot the trees for the hell of it. Of course, he was more than a little crazy, but such impulses do come once in a while.

But at least he knew where they were headed. That being a double edged sword, since all his men were bothering him about where they were headed. He repeated at least a thousand times that they were heading somewhere between Petosky and Houghton Lake, until he was damned sick of that, too. But he couldn’t just shrug his men off. He had earned the loyalty and trust of his men, and he intended to continue doing so.

Henri led the 3rd battalion in the 1st army corps. Wether he or someone else would be leading it by the end of the war, heck, wether it EXISTED at the end of the war, was beyond him. But that mattered not. The train was slowing down.

After what seemed like an eternity of squealing brakes, it finally came to a halt, and he managed to find his way out of the train. Men spilled out of the train on either side for a few minutes, along with their supply carts, ammunition wagons, and a few dozen artillery. The train began to leave as he turned to address his men.

He looked around at his crisp unit of troops as they stood in the muddy woods.

“Well, men. High command says we are to march south southwest and seize the fortified outpost at Cadillac. It’s about a fifty mile march through the usual old grove woods.” He gestured at a nearby single track dirt road that crossed the rail and led into the woods. “We’re to follow that for a while, and it should lead us there. You all know your duties. Form into column! Baggage train in the middle, guards all around it! Mounted scouts ahead! Inform us if we come near an enemy column. Well, let’s march.”

The column started forward, 10,000 men all in all. He walked among them for a while, chatting with them amiably, then went back to the head of the baggage train, where the Master of Horses rode along, supervising the veritable herd of mares that walked with the column.

“Davout!” the Master exclaimed. “You’ll be wanting your horse, I assume?”

“Yes,” he replied. “It’s a hell of a long walk.”
