I recently bought a Linksys router to connect my laptops to the internet to which my desktop is connected. Does the router make it possible to set up a network between the computers? For example, does it make it possible to 'net send'? If so could someone explain to me how I set that up?

yes, you can make a network with a router

Yes, a router is the ideal way to do a small home network. As far as the basics are concerned, just plug the comps into the router with Cat5e or Cat6 cable. What specifically do you want to do with it?

"Net send" will only work if your comps have the messenger service running, which they shouldn't.

How do you get the messenger service running?

ahhh avoid enabling the messenger service! its just not worth it, IMHO

There is no reason to run the messenger service. It only creates another hole in the security of your comp. There's a reason that MS Antispyware and similar programs prompt you to shut it down if they detect it running.

The router serves as the gateway to the internet, and connects all your "local" PCs together in your own local net.

I used to have 5 PCs networked together at my house. Now I'm down to two, occasionally 3 when my son decides to power up his old laptop. ;) It makes it much easier to transfer files from one system to another, if necessary. I also have a printer hosted directly on the local net, so we can print to it from whichever PC we are at.
