The only legal way is to have a family member buy the game on steam and gift it you your steam account. If your playing a pirated game, the solution is as above, buy the game and support the devs so they can continue to afford to patch this game and develop more DLC and XP's for us.
I'm not sure the exact method "got the game" you mean. If you got a physical copy as a gift, it should have required you to activate the product on steamworks. That's all you need to do to play single and multi.
If you mean you just got the game, or you installed it on your computer while the person who gave it to you is also playing the same copy, then multi wont' work.
