New Buttons

@DH do you have original artwork for the animals that you want to use? If you do, I could do some buttons with your artwork so you can see the final version of the different scrolls so you can make a decision.

I have no artwork HydromancerX did all the graphics.

I was going to say that the Animals are slightly to big. Maybe 1 or 2 pixels smaller would look not so "stuffed". That was my first impression at least. But I also think they look really good, the scroll concept is pretty nice! :goodjob:

I don't really like the complete blue background of the Manta. But the round one for the shark looks cool. Still, I for myself prefer if there was no background at all.

Maybe for the Myths you could use a "shadow" of the animal like the Manta, and for Stories you could use a normal picture like for the shark? (if there are stories and myths after all, not sure :crazyeye:)

@DH Some more samples for you to pick the final design. Let me know which way you want to go, an I will get them finished for you.

These are animals with their real backgrounds.

The scrolls with the cut out animals.

These are the cut out animals using the same background, with the added effect of the animals coming out of the scroll.

The second and third lines are great but I would need to try them in game to be able to say which is best. I do like the 3D effect of those in line 3.

IMO all of them nice but middle ones (without background) looks best for me.

I can give you the DDS files, what is the best way to send them to you?

TB an I both like row 2 and 3 but leaning towards 3.

On the 3rd line, it looks like there's a thin light blue line around the crab that gives the impression that it was pasted there.

This minor detail aside, same opinion as Sparth.

Oh, and regarding the initial list of buttons, as a non-English native speaker I was always wondering what a Hopscotch really was (thought it was some kind of road), now I know ;) Though now I find it a bit odd to consider it as a building... (would more see it as an option for story tellers/entertainers to build similar to the dances) [/offtopic]

I am with DH on this, what looks good INGAME is better, and for now to me 3 is the best, but IS IT ingame?? Ingame looks better with LESS distractions on them.
So i guess what i am saying is, 3 looks way better IF it were a BIGGER pic of them, but as a btn?? well i will let DH decide, he is the Mod Boss.

Pack them (rar or zip) and attach to the post in this thread.

I can put them in Hydro and I's FPK from here. It'll mean the old files will still be in the main FPK but I wouldn't want such a huge update for such a small file adjustment. Perhaps we can just take note of the old references and the next time one of us is messing with the main FPK we remove them then. Fair 'nuff?

Don't put them in FPKs. It will only be forgotten then we will have duplicates and so on. If you want them on the SVN then put them in the correct corresponding art folder. Doing this for all art by many people allows one person to update the FPKs at a suitable time.

Well... what folder IS that for these buttons? I'm not even sure where they're called for in the xml...

And are they to retain the exact same file path as they would have in the current xml? Or is the xml defined file paths subject to adjustment so they can go in the appropriate module?

1) it is in the art defines for the unit

2) both. with WoC they are the same thing.

For example Assets/Art/Interface/Buttons/Units/TalesOf_Beluga.dds and if you want to put up two alternatives put the second in Assets/Art/Interface/Buttons/Units/Alt/TalesOf_Beluga.dds. I can then look at them in game and come to a conclusion.

I think he committed them earlier, he was having some trouble with the internet. I gave him the 3D version ones, have a look at them and then we will put the full scroll ones in for you to look at.

Edit: I have now given TB the RIGHT files to upload to the SVN. He will be committing them shortly. There is now a "3D" effect button for every Tales building.

So what do people think of these in the game? Whisperr's got 4 more to do and is not going to move forward until she's got some feedback. If we want them done before release she's going to need to hear some commentary.

At the resolution I play the default ones are not as interesting as shown here. It fact they are a bit busy. I have not tried the alternate ones.

I have done the alternate ones, I will give them to TB to commit to the SVN tomorrow.

@DH: Not only have we put the other set in for your evaluation, upon closer examination in-game we realized that for units, nothing about this button approach seems to be a good idea. It would work great for the mission and building buttons (and for that we still prefer the first set with the scroll cutout and 3d-ish approach to the animal paste-ins) but neither one really works well for a unit icon in the plot group list.

We've come up with another approach for the UNITS and were wondering if you wanted the efforts she's put in so far in as the Mission/Building button arts? (and a new set for the units themselves.)

First off all the whole point is that the "Tales of..." are not really units. Secondly the missions are the same for all of them so we don't need different ones. I'll have a look later, I have appointments all this morning, which I am going to be late for if I don't get a wriggle on.;)
