The Lapita culture is very interesting, didn't know it's existed last week and I think I will mod it in Civ IV

Polynesians could fill a (big) empty place on the earth map:the pacific era. I've read that civilizations or leaders will get some flavours, and two of them was "naval recon" and "naval" He he he

Moai statues could be their unique building or national wonder, and they can be the kings of seafaring with a good early pirogue

Personally I would then prefer adding the Aboriginal Australians or the Maoris who can settle on the islands, but adding the Polynesians would be interesting and different to play with.

Tonga and Micronesia would disagree with you, nevertheless most of the big empire building civs have been added in previous versions of civ and will most likely be added in some way to this one, so that basically leaves unique and geographically diverse civs to chose from.

Its a bit hard to control a huge amount of land when there isn't much land to control...

If the generic Native American tribe is included, the generic Polynesian peoples should be included as well in an expansion. More people have heard about them and their achievments, so if Civilization want recognition as a requirement for a civ - there's nothing wrong with the Polynesians!
