In 800 AD it was 30 Kingdoms in Norway.
Vikings used archers, mostly in large battles. Large battles started with archers, then as the enemy got closer, they throwed spears, then it was handcombat: swords, axes and spears.
- So perhaps an Archer (Longbow unit) is needed
- And even a Javelin thrower?
- A cavalry unit is very needed, as they used horses quite a lot, especially on the the offence, when hunting down people that tried to run...
- Perhaps even two kinds of cavalry: one light, without horse armor, one heavy with horse armor.
Perhaps one certain units could take slaves (treller)? Not the "Berserker" though, as he went "Berserk" and killed every man he could see...
According to Gulatingslaw a free man HAD TO OWN a sword, axe, spear, shield.
Vikings also used "rock throwing" as a weapon. They collected rocks before battles...
Horses: They also had armor for the horse, which they vikings loved very much, so much that the horse followed a man to the grave when he died.
