I noticed Microsoft silently released a December 2005 DirectX end-user runtime package.

It seems this update features support for 4.0 shader stuff for ATI and NVIDIA.

Microsoft calls this release: "DirectX (December 2005) improves the graphics, security, and performance of your operating system. Download and install this update for your Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP-based system."

As well as: "The DirectX end-user installation includes all the latest and previous released DirectX runtime. This includes the bi-monthly D3DX, XInput, and Managed DirectX components."

From what I gathered it seems people are getting speed improvements at least on ATI hardware.

Also given the fact it now includes all previously released core components it is a very standalone file and might solve a lot of DirectX install woes for people. If you have issues with DirectX you might want to give this a try.

Note that this is still 9.0c with a lot of updated components.
