NEW GAME - Apocalypse

Cool cool. Sorry about the absence of the past day. Forgot my darned power cord while in the city. But looks like teams are already picked, as well as settings. Epic/Marathon games are good with me, though as noted, they do give a long start.

Edit: I have school to about 2:00 M-W, and until 5:00 TH. On M-W, I'll probably have to work by around 4:00, but that should be about the only big restriction besides normal work on the weekends.

Maybe it would be better to go with normal speed...I was unsure of some of the effects of the game speed, but based on people's responses it looks like normal will last quite long enough.

As long as we have at least a few 'adv. start' points, I am fine with Epic....I just hate spending a month or something waiting for your first new unit...

Good point. I'm happy to go with normal if that's what the majority want or advanced start. As long as the majority are in agreement....

Also does anyone know of a complete list of Civs upto BTS? Not for the individual games but a complete list combined? I'm playing China in a Vanilla CIV PBEM and it will be confusing if I'm China again as I was asking for a random start. Chances are low but knowing my luck....

I do have a less useful list of leaders with their traits...

Normal Speed 500 turns , Epic 1000 i guess, so twice as much time

And the buildings, units and wonders are also more expensive on epic, I think it's by a universal factor of 1.25, but can't say for sure.

Ok then. It seems that most are fine with epic as long as we get an advanced start. I originally put up a 300 point start. Does this seem good to everyone?

Also, thanks for all the extra info. I was wondering if things became more expensive in epic.

Don't know if 300 is good as I've never done an advanced start before but I find Epic much more enjoyable than normal and Marathon much more enjoyable than Epic. In single player at least it makes research more more realistic.

300 is probably just enough to build a city, maybe expand it to pop 2 or 3, and buy a unit, maybe two. That would help enormously to get the game going, although it is a very small number considering there are 8 players on a huge map and it is unlikely that we will be butting up against each other or anything. I think it is fine, since the 'click end, send email' for a month is solved by buying a couple units so you can do SOMETHING. Also, a size two or three city produces your intial builds much faster.

Okay, just tried it out, and on Epic, the basis costs are:
149 for a city
+49 for an extra population
+36 for a mine
+22 for a scout/warrior

You do not start with a settler or a warrior/scout, so a regular start is ~175 points, so you have about 125 extra points to play with. That rules out pretty much buying a tech, but you can boost your city one, get an extra unit, and maybe build one improvement (mine, farm, whatever). So it is not a huge boost to the start, but it will help out a bit. Also on the plus side, since you are presumably building just one city, you get a much better look at where to put it....you have an 8 by 8 or so 'cleared' area to look at.
