The Hagia Sophia spawn a free great prophet

This GP can't enhance religion.

I used my GP from hagia Sophia to enhance religion yesterday, so something else is stopping it

You didn't try spreading religion with that Great Prophet first, did you? If so, it prevents you from using the GP for other uses (Holy Site or Enhancement).

I don't think this wonder is worth building anymore in the first place. It's more efficient to buy GP with faith. By the time you build it, your faith budget should be pretty healthy anyways, and there's less of an opportunity cost involved in spending faith than in tying down a city for many turns to build this wonder in lieu of something else.

The expansion has seriously devalued this wonder. It was a must have in Vanilla for various slingshot strategies, but GP don't lend themselves to slingshots.

The new HS is found in Leaning Tower

The only time I build HS now is when I want to impress a CS quest or get that free GP to go spread my word asap...

It's quite useful in higher diff levels if you actually want a religion in a decent time frame (enhanced anyways).

Usually I get only my first Prophet out before the HS is complete. Mostly I can get enough faith (200) for the missionary before the HS, but not to 300 faith. So the missionary is bought right after I use the HS to enhance my religion.

Rare super ++ faith times (or as Byzantium) I can get the 2nd Prophet out (for enhancement), but then that still gives me a 3rd Prophet for faster spread of the Religion by using it on 4 CSs (or AI cities without a founded religion) to get the 'spread' driving forth.

Plus... free (no cost) temple. Especially if you add temple based beliefs. Quite nice, really.

It's not the 'op' wonder it used to be, but it's not horrible.

Well, having tried out the Byzantines and Maya so far, I haven't found myself lacking for faith points. This is on emperor, granted. In both bases I had my religion and enhancement set up before I got theology, all my cities converted, and various minors besides. HS in these circumstances is just getting in the way of building something else.

Both games had early starts with faith producing natural wonders. My second city in each game grabbed that and it was an enormous boost. Is this a starting bias for those civs? Or just dumb luck?

I am however going straight for the leaning tower. :)

Could be starting bias. I started one game with Ethopia where I also had a faith natural wonder closeby.

And likewise when I was playing around with religion as Celts, had the Sri Lankan mountain nearby.

My one game with the Byzantines also had one (2F6F), which is essentially a free Great Prophet tile improvement on grassland.

Regarding the original question, I think you need to put the great prophet in the holy city of your religion, wich might not be where you built the Hagia Sophia
