New Let's Plays

Gamereactor live-stream starting now.

It's turn 70ish and they have 2 cities and not single tile improvement built! WOW!

Not again

EDIT: Had to take a glimpse... OMG! They have a MINUS 10 science penalty for having a money deficit. Never thought I'd ever see that tooltip. Now they have no money and almost no science. And their marvelous plan to overcome all this is building a wonder - because, you know, no maintenance ! But it gives food! Just what you urgently need when you're already in negative health....

I really have to reconsider my belief in "professional" reviews. It can't be possible none of those well-known gaming sites has at least one halfway decent civ5 players in their ranks.

Yeah :aargh:

Firaxis should make all previewers take a basic civ competency exam before giving them a copy of a civ game. LOL

Hmm... it's a rough call... the folks getting it are more or less professional game review people, but I do get the feeling that a lot of them aren't strategy people, and while they're doing their best, the Civ fans are all crying softly to ourselves while we watch.

I don't know why people think they all need to be deep strategy articles instead of "hey readers, there's this new civ game coming out like you know and this is what it looks like."

It's a shame because those are the guys doing the "professional" reviews in 2-3 weeks and they have no clue at all. Or do you think they would let some complete noob play if they had anyone who had the slightest insight into civ games?

No wonder so many recent AAA titles were praised in previews and even tests, then turned out to be completely borked.

I do spend money from time to time on gaming magazines (or at least turn my adblocker off to allow them to have some income from my online reading), so I feel slightly betrayed ;)

I get what you're saying but it's kind of like me getting a preview copy of some hot new RPG and then I start making my guy..

Hmm, the wizard hat looks cool - I'll be a wizard.

I think I'll put all my points into strength so I can get a big sword.

(fumble around trying to select a sword)

I guess wizard's can't use swords, oh well. I don't like spells so I'll grab this staff of casting because it has a cool red orb on the top.

Well, here we go guys.......

Is it a surprise everybody turns my video off?

Be nice if they said "Yeah, we got Ted from accounting to play it for us since he's a big Civ fan and we're not."

And of course when they get official review copies a week or two before release I'm pretty sure the review would then most likely read something like "Yeah, um, Ted's foaming at the mouth and stabbed me out of fear I'd try to pry him away from it when I got too close. So, the expert seems to like it. Now if you'll excuse me, the boss says I need to see a doctor because I'm bleeding everywhere."

You guys are just now noticing the sorry state of videogame "journalism?"

Since the Internet killed the decent gaming magazines (like Computer Gaming World), it's been very sad indeed. Only the hacks are left.

The co-commentator of the German "Writing Bull" letsplay is from "Gamestar", my main info source for games where I ain't in the community already. Apart from their strange sense of humor and addiction to pointless smalltalk, they were fairly competent.
I also didn't have too much reason to complain about their reviews before. They were a few instances where they praised the beauty of a rouged corpse, but they got more cautious by now. They also post "buyers warning" immediately if their preview version is in a sad state (though some say only if they can afford to anger the publisher).

Ha, fair enough.

Ideally, only strategy gamers should review strategy games, only RPG players should review RPG games, only FPS players should review First Person Shooters, etc...

The choice of whom received BE preview copies and under what pre-conditions has to be the one big goof that I fault Firaxis marketing with this time around. So far they have done a stellar job of getting word out to the fans and building suspense, but now it is a fumble where these Let's Play videos are concerned...

It is clear that enough work and imagination went into BE to justify the hype, so it is too bad about this aspect of the pre-release marketing campaign. BE deserves better.

The problem I see is that these poor LP's could hurt sales because it will make the game look a lot worse than it actually is to the casual observer.

My point exactly, though it was inferred rather than specific. Thanks for highlighting it. :)
