hello there. I hope Im posting this in the right place...Im new here, and I dont want my first post to incite calls of "STFU N00B!1!" I've read this site for a while, and you guys are civ3 Gods, so I was wondering if maybe you guys could help me with this question I've got.

I own civ3 and civ3 conquests. One of the really cool things about about civ3 was the huge earth map. I'd edit that map in my civ3 map editor, and set manditory starting posisions, so the game would look like the current world map. (America starting in North America, Perisa in the middle east, etc.) Those games were wicked fun.

So, naturally, when I saw the oodles of new civs in my Conquests game, I was dying to try it out again. I'm running into some problems. I cant open that earth map in my civ3 conquests editor, and I cant use the new civs if I run it in the regular map editor. if I DONT edit it, the countries end all all wrong (Ottomans in florida, America in Russia...we cant have that happen!)

So...Im wondering...if there a earth map conquest I can download, or a way to copy the map from the civ3 editor, and paste it in the conquests editor? or another way I can work this out?

thanks guys

First off, we're a little more, well, civilized than STFU n00b!... we'd kindly point you in the right direction while trying to answer your question... Unless you happened to catch Zulu first...He's got a nice "Wrong Forum!" .gif that he likes to use....;)

In any event....

Go to File/Import, and when the dialog opens up, select Map only. It will prompt for a file name, and should import the map no problem. It's been a while since I've done this, but this should be accurate.

Oh, and welcome to the forums!

I don't understand why you can't. I can load the old huge earth map into my conquests editor without problems. But if that doesn't work then try the import thing.

thanks guys. that list of maps ia amazing...I downloaded too, fooled around with them (made spain bigger so I could fit portugal on there too, etc) but I was having a little bit of trouble getting them to open in CIV3, so I tried the importing map bussiness again

whooo! it worked! I spent an hour adding almost all the civs and tweaking the world, making things a bit bigger where a lot of civs were going to be crowded...
I loaded it into the game...no prob.
ok. I lied. there was a problem

It only seems to want to let me play with 7 civs...the map is huge, and I had about 12 in there. I can edit the rules to allow more civs to play? the world is awfully large for only 7 nations.... :)

thanks again guys

Follow the instructions in this screenshot of the Conquests editor. Hope this helps! :)

Ummm, Quasar? I don't see any link there, not sure it will help much.

EDIT: nevermind, you noticed. :)

The reason that you only get 8 civs is that the "Scenario Properties" section of the map editor lists how many civs are allowed. If you go to Civ3 Conquests Map editor and load the map, one of the top options (along with File, edit, etc.) is "Scenario". In that go to "Scenario Properties". If you open up that screen, somewhere sort of to the right of the screen is a list of how many civs are allowed. As far as I know, 31 civs is the maximum (maybe 32). Edit that number for the number of civs you want to have in your game. You can also click the box "Debug" which allows you to see the whole game when in play mode.

The way to do this is that you pick a country that you want to have as an observer. If you don't mind losing some ocean in the South Pacific (which is usually the case in an earth map) then to place LM hills on that spot. Go to the "Scenario" button and choose "Custom Rules". The computer will give you a warning that you can just ignore. Next, edit the rules for hills. On the right side of the box is LM hills, give yourself a huge defensive bonus and whatever you want for shields, coins and food (note, if you want to you can surround this place with LM hills also). Next, go to the "overlay" button and place a city start circle there (btw, since the Byzantines and Ottomans usually start in the same place, choosing one of them would be a good observer).

What I usually do next, is alter the Byzantines so that they start with Alph., writing and Literature. I then alter the U.N. so that it can give all techs that two nations have (along with loads of other stuff) and make it that it gets built with the tech "Literature". Finally, I alter the stealth fighter so that only the Byzantines can build it and give it a range of 199 (along with making sure that it has "Recon" checked. I make sure that there are no requirements (tech or resource) for the stealth fighter. This sound complicated but is actually easy. Finally, I edit the stealth bomber so that it does not have stealth (if it does it will not bomb any units until the correct tech is discovered) by CTRL-clicking on the stealth in the properties on the left.

Finally, I usually give myself some iron, luxuries etc, in the one city square. Then I right-click on the circle and assign it to player 1. Since you are always player 1 when going against the computer, you will be the gods.

rock on. the instuctions helps, and I am now taking over the world...one puny civ at a time.
thanks everybody
