Is there going to be a new naval option before Renaissance?

Trireme->Caravel->Destroyer?
Frigate->Ironclad->Battleship?

Where would the privateer fit in?

Currently triremes are eaten up by cities pretty good esp if they have a bowman.

I am thinking about this as I play Elizabeth, trying to eat up more ships on the way to the steam achievement.

Since the Privateer is supposedly a melee unit, it should fit somewhere in the Trireme path.

The existence of the Dromon Unique Unit hints at the possible addition of a Medieval-era melee ship for it to replace, but that's far from certain. If such a unit does exist, then a melee upgrade path of Trireme->(Dromon)->Privateer->Destroyer makes some sense.

A ranged upgrade path is less obvious. The Frigate doesn't currently upgrade to the Ironclad, and it shouldn't, because the two were contemporary. Similarly, the Caravel also shouldn't upgrade to the Frigate for the same reason.

On the subject of melee naval units, I wonder what kind of promotions they'll have. Shock and Drill don't make much sense when the terrain is always "open."

Promos for naval melees could be +20% attack or defense instead of terrain dependant maybe.

Embarked units aren't one-shot kills anymore, so for melee, maybe +20% versus ships or +20% versus embarked units.

i wouldn't be surprised if there was a bonus in coastal/ocean tiles

UUs are in ()

Melee
Trireme(Quinquereme)->New Unit?(Dromon)->Privateer->Destroyer

Ranged
New Unit?>Caravel>Frigate(Ship of the Line)
Ironclad>Battleship

I remember reading that they have retooled the tech tree to put more techs in between units. Maybe the caravel is pushed back? or some new lateen sail using boat?

They should give Germany a UU Battleship esp. w/ Bismarck as leader.

The Bismark was most famous for being sunk by some planes. I'm not exactly sure why that would make a good UU. Especially since, throughout both World Wars, they could never challenge British naval supremacy and had to rely on UBoats (which would make a better choice for a UU than a Battleship).
