I really have no preference, but the other one does seem bigger. It's almost as if Mercator took the original world map and just made everything but Europe larger. 
I dunno.
Anyway, Russian ships are poised to bombard and take Alexandria in the next turn. This will be the beginning of a campaign in which Russia will annex Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Crete, and Cyprus. Continued action to finish off the decaying Ottoman Empire will take place when better weaponry is available.

A few Questions to Peregrine:
Since the Orientals are barbarians, does it mean they are as agressive as regular barbarians, i.e. they are bound to attack you when they can? (important in regard of the use of the suez-canal)
Since you gave (IMO rightly) the Dutch Indies to the German Civ, have you considerd putting Dutch Guinea (sp?) (Suriname) in South-America and/or the Netherlands Antilles to them?

In regard to the British request for open sea routes through narrow straits: The US seconds that notion. Also all Nations are kindly asked NOT to block US harbours. Currently the port near Washington is blocked. Captains of ships who fail to take Guides (what are the officials from port authorities called who board ships to guide them through narrow straits or sandbanks so they enter the port safely called in English? In Dutch they are called Loods), and then block the harbour, may get are fined by the respective port authorities.
The US wishes to apoligize to the UK conceirning the complaints about taxing the Channel. It was the UK on Apolyton who did that.

The port authorities have put a fine on the German Steamer blocking shipping traffic
traffic through the port of Washington of 20% of their deliverd cargo (10% tax and 10% science revenue), presumably Tools to New York and Gold to Washington. Pending information from the captain on the gross worth of his deliverd cargo, the Fine is set on 1000 US Dollars, based on delivery of simular Cargo to Amsterdam earlier this year. Congress is preparing a bill on a total trade embargo, and US Coastguard is ready to board a German Steamer and Yacht carrying cargo if a settlement can not be reached. 
The US urges merchants to let pilots board their ships in order to prevent these frustrating things from happening.
A mayor Scientific breakthrough is expected any moment, and will boost our thriving economy. :grad:
Traderoutes could not be established. The freighter to Paris was unable to move freely through the french countryside. It is beleived that only an alliance with France will allow free movement through French Territory.
Simular problems are expected in Russia. Therefore the US proposes trade-alliances with both France and Russia.

Troops are moving further into Independent Territory. An Independent Yacht was sunk in the straits of Gibraltar, who was blocking free movement there. US naval vessels escorting merchent shipping sailed clear of the straits.

1. Yes, the Orientals are barbarians and they will attack whenever possible. Even set on King level of difficulty, they haven't, to date, proven too aggressive.
2. Suriname; no room to place it and this particular colony was of virtually no significance historically. Actually, I would have liked to place it, but had to draw lines somewhere. I could only place 256 cities. I've stated elsewhere that I wished for another 20 cities at least.

Sorry, my f'ng email notification has been screwed up since the forum split.
The czar would like to try and convince you all to trade more often with Russia. I see in these posts that so much of your freights are going to America, and I must note that central Russia is further away from Europe than the American eastern seabord, not to mention our even more distant eastern maritime district. I do not understand why Russia and Japan are not monopolizing on acceptance of freights, as they would be far more profitable.
If your deterrent is the fact that central russia can only be reached by land, I must remind you that our railroad system is getting better by the day, and the trip would not be long. Also, I am willing to sign temporary trade alliances for the mere purpose of allowing your freights to get through my zones of control.
That reminds me Exile, what was your rationale in not having the freight have the IZOC feature? Was it to recreate the era's protectionism?

1.) My intention for this scenario was that it would focus on things nautical and oceanic trade. The rigid zones of control therefore make coastal cities much more attractive as eventual trade destinations. All the trade unit has to do is disembark to establish a trade route and reap the rewards therefrom.
2.) I did not want to see multiple trade units "infiltrating" into hostile/neutral empires as they so often do. And yes, giving an empire the ability to "forbid" this sort of trade with rigid zones of control is part of the "feel" of the era that I was attempting to impart, although, as the final splash page makes clear, this was more of an era of free trade than protectionism, which came some years later.
3.) Also, as stated in the ImpRead file, I wanted to make the USA the most tempting and profitable destination for European trade routes. Historically, this is accurate, and, luckily, the scenario does reflect this.
