New screenshots on Gamespot

Graphics look a little weird. But if graphics bothered me I would never have bought Final Fantasy 7. So bring on Civ 4!

As of cities:
I hope the size of the city will be more distinguished this time around, not just having 3 phases (1-6, 7-12 and above...). I would like it to show difference at every time it grows...

It will do that. Now that its WYSIWYG. As a new population point emerges, houses and improvements will show up on the new tile being worked.

At every point change at least up to 21 the city should evolve. After 21 they could start shrinking the structures and start high rise buildings.

Hail to the King, baby!

Is it Nov yet?

Let's see, VIC-20, Commodore 128, Amiga 500, so it was my third computer. At this point, I've lost count as to how many computers I've had/have. :) Main home machine at the moment is a dual 2.5 Ghz G5, some random PC for playing games, several Linux and OpenBSD boxes for various tasks, and a couple of Powerbooks and PC laptops. Work machine is an old dual 1 GHz G4, and some random PC for SourceUnsafe.

In that Game Developer article they say that they worked on supporting low-end, non gamer machines. Graphics is a concern to me insofar as it affects the snappiness of the UI and the ability to get a clear overall view of the situation. I had concerns before Civ 3 came out that it would be an unplayable sea of pixels like SMAC and Test of Time were, but it proved unwarranted as I'm hoping any concerns I have over the move to 3D in this version will be.

No, and those who do know aren't telling ;)

I think I remember someone saying what it was. Unfortunately, I can't remember what it is and, even if I did, I wouldn't reveal it to others since it felt a bit anti-climatic (its more fun to keep the wild speculation going ;) ).

About 3-D. When I think about Civ4, I basically feel that they have to switch to 3-D eventually. What's the point of putting it off until Civ5 when you are probably a decade behind the times. It obviously limits what people can do, but I've learned not to underestimate the resourcefulness of Civ fans.

i guess i am just one of the old civ fans :) i am 26, and have been playing since the first game, when i still had an amiga500 computer ;)

3d will make modding cities a lot different, i mean a graphic which you see all of the time from one angle, since it is 2d, to me has not only a bigger value due to nostalgia, but would motivate me more to try to make it look better. If i am just making a texture, which would be seen from a large number of different agles, zoom-ins and zoom-outs, then i wouldnt feel as motivated, and those graphics in the pics still seem rather boring to me. But hey, i am talking to the counterstrike generation here it seems  :p
I'm 25, played the 3 Civs, but I don't feel old at all. I'm sometimes a bit reluctant to novelty, but if you think about it for 2 seconds, then you realize that there's no point in being reluctant. The only thing that could sadden you is the destruction of a legacy, but that's not in your hands. ;) For the rest, if you don't like Civ4's 3D graphics, then stay with Civ3, it will still be a great game when Civ4 has shipped ! I also like 2D graphics, but that's mainly nostalgia. When I feel like it, I go back playing some NES and SNes games for a while... At this point I can't say that Civ4 has worse graphics than Civ3, and 3D graphics will be very flexible to choose the way you want to see the world while playing, and to make cool pics (I hope !). Don't be afraid to change. :)

what would be interesting would be to have something in the "preferences" screen where you can choose civ3 graphics, 3d graphics, or text-based

You could keep the game consistantly at Civ3's angle and zoom, is that much different?

I can only imagine the nightmare of trying to program that.

Yeah, from that orientation the Civ4 graphics look really good (better than C3); I'll try different angles but I know I can always go back to this one and like it.

I am not old either, just an old civ fan ;) There are people in these forums who have only played civ3 for example, and wouldnt want to play civ2 (i wouldnt want to play civ1 either though  ).
I LOVE 2d graphics, to me they look amazing, but that is due to many reasons, some of which are very particular to me possibly. It is a bit poetic to have a 2d map, with 2d units and cities, and then imagine that these things represent armies and towns, whereas if its 3d you tend you see them more like units anyway. That said i like civ3 units a lot, although i cannot make them since there isnt much support for freeware 3d programs :(

Wasnt there something about getting to have the civ 3 angle as a option.

I will try and find it. :goodjob:

Off I go..... :coffee:

Is it just me or did it look like boats cold go up rivers and into lakes.

The rivers are still in between tiles so boat units can't go up them. But, rivers and lakes can act as trade routes connecting your cities.

Well, since the game is 3D, you should be able to set the camera at pretty much any angle you like. So you will probably be able to set things at the same angle as Civ3 and never adjust it, if that's what you prefer. But since it's 3D, it should also be possible to spin the camera around to all kinds of degrees, and (judging by those screenshots) zoom in and out as well.

Why anyone would be complaining about this, I have no idea.

Can you also adjust the elevation of the point of view? i.e., can you sometimes look at your units eye-to-eye and other times look at their bald spots? I don't think we know that.

That it is in full 3d isnt a problem at all if you arent modding. But if you are it means that you cannot make 2d city graphics for it. That is all. Although i guess i can make 3d city graphics with blender.

Wow, VIC-20, I have not heard that name in such a long time. I am 35 and I started with a VIC-20 myself, then went to a C64. Before the VIC-20, I had an Atari 2600 and then an Intellivision (i loved Sea Battle!). I remember me and a friend of mine writing our own games in basic on the VIC-20. The thing is, they were random text games but we had a ton of fun with them. I believe graphics don't make a game, it only enhances a game. It will be refreshing to see the 3D graphics get into CIV4. I will say, I think good crisp 2D graphics can surpass 3D graphics at many times, especially in a strategy game. Alot of times I feel fancy graphics are not necessary, but if I would loadup CIV2, it just seems boring and mainly because of the graphics. I love the CIV3 animations and graphics, like the battleships firing.
