I hope Firaxis add 2 new social policy trees for Religion (rename Piety) and an Espionage one. The tech tree get expanded so I don't see why we can't have more policies. Cram all bonuses in only 10 trees is too much.

Actually, the main problem with the current social trees is that Autocracy & Order open too late;
it would almost be like adding 2 trees if Gods & Kings moved their opening up an era or two.

A social policy about espionage seems to me really excessive. Some social policies could be reworked to include some bonus to espionage. Honor tree comes to mind.

Not only that.

Tradition/Liberty are good, still could need some tweaks. Honor is kind of bad designed.
After that theyre all pretty bad designed still.

The point of policies (was/should have been) to give you options to alter your playstyle, currently no tree really does that. Its basically just more food more gold more happiness all over, different flavour.

With the new tech tree and it's WWI-techs, this might even happen. Maybe not by actually shifting their starting area, but by prolonging the later ones, so it *feels* earlier.

I have been hoping for some new late game (modern era) Social Policy tree. Perhaps Enviromentalism would be exciting and interesting one :)

Also Medic promotions/effect should get more power and make them more usefull. Now that units have more hit points in G&K, medic abilities should be needed more. Perhaps Honor tree could get "Battlefield Medicine" branch to give a better benefits from Medic abilities. Scouts units could be useful even in late game if promoted to medics :)

I hope they rework Commerce. Is it an economic branch or a naval one? The two sides really don't gel at all.

Before Civ5 came out, I was already thinking of ways to mod the game to expand the number of trees. I thought of adding an Environmentalism tree. Also, I would split the naval and commercial aspects of the commerce tree. Finally, I considered having a separate communism and labor trees, but I'm not positive about that one.

After I played the game, I stopped thinking about the idea. It's not that it's impossible or even a bad idea, but it would require a dramatic change in how social policy costs scale (and/or how culture is accumulated) and I don't really have a good enough fundamental understanding of the current formula and how it impacts with balance to start planning its replacement.

The naval game seems to become more important so that will help commerce a bit. Also, it could boost mercantile CS relations somehow, makes sense.

I'm afraid that would be a bad fit, as Espionage isn't available until the Renaissance and Honor is obviously available long before that. I agree with your premise, though...Order would be a nice fit.

Honor is kind of bad designed.

...have you played with a military Civ with the entire Honor tree active? It is not a bad tree in its current design. Free culture, free gold, and tons of fixes for happiness and other things that would have otherwise been a concern while mowing down neighboring Civs.

That's an awesome idea for a new Policy branch! What would be your second addition, dude?

For espionage,I guess the effects of SPs on it would be like this:

-Patronage gives espionage bonus to rigs elections on city states;
-Commerce gives :c5gold: for stolen technologies;
-Order increase chances on tech stealing;
-Autocracy gives bonus on Counter-espionage;

I'd really like to see a way to change social policies once adopted. I realize that goes a bit against the design of the game, but having them be purely static is boring and doesn't offer an interesting choices.

I'd suggest giving great artists the ability either undo all your choices or the choices in one branch. I'd would make artists a whole lot more useful. Maybe possible every great person should have this ability. Thoughts?

I think that's a bad bad idea. It feels such a cop out to suddenly change how your civilization work so quickly...

And it seems like something a "Great Politician" would do, not a Great Artist. haha.

Hmmm...thinking about potential new (if unlikely) Policy Trees makes me want a Privateering or Piracy tree. Could move some of the more odd naval bonuses from Commerce into that and then better focus Commerce on, you know, making gold.

I think being able to switch between incompatible branches is enough :)

I don't see a Great Politician ever fitting in game, but the thought occurs to me that Ataturk represents something like this.

In Civ V, it seems pretty clear that the Social Policies were one of the last things they finished (and had to tweak very substantially in patches after release), so I wouldn't be surprised if even the Firaxis people don't really have a good handle right now on where the Social Policies for G&K will end up.

Thanks :) But you should rather thank aatami in that thread. It was all his ideas. I just happened to like it as well.

Second addition... Seeing as Espionage will not be a social policy, I would go with Louis XXIV.

Been thinking the same while playing the game. Own trees for Commerce and Navalism.

I had the broad idea for an Enviromentalism tree but never worked specifics. I was trying to think of a counter to it. Maybe an Orwellian type thing? I'm thinking espionage plus...something. I really don't know. Just an idea.
