Thanks Thor. When I was thinking whether to use Sturmgewehr or AK-47 based my judgement on the question: "Which one you think first when talking about assault rifles?". While Sturmgewehr was first AK-47 is the most legendary, most favored, most popular, most copied plus one of the best assault rifles ever made and is still used in many countries.
but then not mauser to bolt action, in pistols there should be parabellums and colt 1911's, bayonnet should be earlier model or even one of those hunting knifes which citizens of Bayonne were first to use as bayonnets, earlier type of lever action rifle than winchester 73 etc. light machinegun is from Lahti-Saloranta when many Lmg's were produced earlier etc. etc.
Ukas, good point, but tech Breakthroughs are about the first of something, not the "best."
Besides what weapon was it that Kalishnikov designed his AK from almost part for part? Yup the Sturmgewehr 44 by his own admission. Notice the extreme similarities. Also most used does not mean best, just most produced.
It's not always about that. About ten peoples invented cinematographic camera about the same time in different countries, but Lumiere brothers had a good production line, so they became fathers and inventors of cinema.
I've fired both of the weapons, so I know there's some similarities in looks and actions. AK-47 was reliable, largely used, modern assault rifle when Sturmgewehr was an early phase in evolution. I'm not saying Ak is the best, but it really makes the money count. That is why it was so popular in the third world, and still is.
Actually Sturmgewehr and AK-47 are both based on same weapon, MKb42(H). This is a good link with more info about Sturmgewehr development:
Ukas, you are a scholar and a Gentleman!! Thank you very much for the icons! They are most assuredley going into my WOTW mod for the German Infantry upgrade tech icon!!
Originally posted by Sword_Of_Geddon I wonder what great icons youll come up with next? How about getting in touch with your ancestry Ukas, and making some Viking tech icons? Doesn't matter what their for, just I think we Civ3ers could use some Norse icons.
Missed this post earlier. I could make a few Viking icons. Any ideas?
Mother's side originates from Sweden but I doubt that if I have much Viking blood - although if I grow a beard part of it will turn red.
ALthough I once made this gigantic mod for Civ2, which had Baltic Sea and surrounding states in late Viking and Hanseatic times. Would be fairly simple to change the tech tree and other concepts to Civ3. Hmm. Graphics needed though.
I just found his gem of a thread. Wow Ukas, you and Rufus really know how to dish out the goods. I love these tech icons and they are definitely going into my mod.
Anything Norse would be good. I'm not requesting this for myself, but for anyone else that could use them, as currently, most Ancient-Era icons are either Greco-Roman or Egyptian, with a few Mesopotamian thrown in(like Cuniform for instance) I'd be interested in a icon representing the ancient Viking's Runic Alphabet however(Celts used it too)
Yes! We need more Norse icons!
I have a few requests for my own Danish mod:
- Runes (as mentioned by Sword_Of_Geddon)
- Brewing (the one you already made looks a bit too Egyptian)
- Berserkergang (= "the action of going berserk")
- Salting (very important for a Viking)
- International Trade (there are water mellons on the one I'm using right now )
