Sorry, I am new to the forums and think the idea of playing GOTM is fun!

I tried getting the new one that I saw on the forums named:

C-IV Gotm XXXVI: Arabia

However I encountered problems. Thinking about it, I wonder if I need BtS/Warlord expansions? I only have the original Civilization IV. When I opened the game it gives me a little thing to press ok about set assets, then instantly it says "load fails" and closes civ4.

My problem may be as simple as I can't play GOTM since I dont have the expansions...But if I don't need them I would appreciate if someone could give me some insight on my problem.

You do not need any expansion pack to play GOTM36. You do need to install special files (.DLL) that come automatically with the BtS expansion pack but not with vanilla. You don't need to buy BtS, just download and install the .dll's as explained on the start page and links provided there. Then install the HOF mod, of course.

Good luck!

Hello, welcome! :wavey:

Have you installed the HoF Mod? Do you have the latest version of Civ4?

Mmm

I installed the HoF thing, but i'm not sure what to do with the .dll thing. Someone care to enlighten me exactly what i'm supposed to do?

Download the .dll thing here.

Unzip it to create a folder called Civ4.

In the folder you will find a Readme.rtf text file and a dll_structure.jpg picture. These two files tell you what to do with the other files in the Civ4 folder. Come back here if you don't understand something they say.

Sorry, I know very little about computers so you are going to have to dumb it down for me.

First of all, your link doesn't work. However, I found the files i'm supposed to download, however I just don't have a clue what exactly to do with them (or what i can do with them...) :(

Your link is bad AlanH...sorry to report.

@ Iamsmart...If you got the .dll file....put it in the folder as per the instructions it came with! I believe it is something like programs>firaxis games>Civilization IV>CvGameCoreDLL. Take the old (original .dll) out of that same folder.

Programs->Fraxis Games->Sid Meier's Civilizaiton 4

But then I can't get any further...and even if I did I still don't know what to do.

I'm extremely suprised there isn't a step by step proccess for something you have to do manual? Surely I can't be the only one who's ever had problems with this...

The link didn't work because I forgot to paste it into my post. Sorry

I'm a Mac user, so the following instructions will probably give a few Windows users a good laugh! They assume you are running Windows XP.

If you are on Vista, someone else will need to interpret them for you, as the only thing I know about Vista is ... I don't want to know about it

The instructions also assume you installed Civ4 from a DVD. If you downloaded it from Steam then your files may be in different places. Again, someone else will have to help.

First, open the Civ4 folder that was created when you downloaded and unzipped the .dll thing. Open the folder in there called "Assets". Right click the file in there called CvGameCoreDLL.dll and select "Copy".

Now you need to find your Civ4 software folder so that you can "Paste" the file you just copied into the correct place in it:

Open "My Computer", and from there, open Local Disk (C:) - that's your main system disk.
In C you should see a folder called "Program Files". Open it.
If it tells you that its contents are hidden to protect you from yourself, be brave. Click the option to "Show the contents of this folder".
In there you should see a folder called "2K Games". Open it.
In there you should see a folder called "Firaxis Games". Open it.
In there you should find a folder called "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" or similar. Open it.
In there you should see a folder called "Assets".
Right click this "Assets" folder and select "Paste".
The system will ask you if you want to replace the existing file with the new one of the same name. [If it doesn't ask then you haven't done it correctly.]
Click the "Yes" button.
The system will do the replacement. If all else is OK, you should be able to launch Civ4 and load the GOTM 36 start file.

If you want to be able to play our Warlords games as well, then you will need to do the same sequence of steps, but "Copy" the file in "Assets" inside "Warlords" in the Civ4 folder, then "Paste" it into the "Assets" folder inside "Warlords" inside the "Sid Meier's Civilization IV" folder you found before.

"First, open the Civ4 folder that was created when you downloaded and unzipped the .dll thing. Open the folder in there called "Assets". Right click the file in there called CvGameCoreDLL.dll and select "Copy"."

Well, I have 2 folders called assets, but nothing is inside of them. The two folders are empty and the files are outside o the folders, and I can't tell them apart...

Also, if I wanted to play the Warlord games...wouldn't I need the Warlord expansion pack? :P

Yes, you would need the Warlords expansion pack to play WOTMs. I was just trying to provide complete instructions.

You can't have two files with the same names in the same place. They have to be in different folders. Where are they, and how did they get there?

I think that's where I told you you would find them! The sentence you quoted is supposed to lead you to the second one of those folders.

I was trying to give it to you step by step, as requested. Let's try it another way:

Go to Civ4/Assets/CvGameCoreDLL.dll
Right click it and copy it.
Go to C:/Program Files/(2K Games?)/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization IV/Assets
Right click that folder and select Paste.

Meh, I fail. I did all of that c/p stuff, downloaded HoF, had newest patch (even downloaded it to make sure...)

I don't suppose you have looked at the FAQ on this subject.

We seem to have covered the first three items in the check list (though you never did say whether you have version 1.74 of Civ4 and the right version of he HoF Mod).

The next step asks if you have installed any mods that change or edit basic files in your Civ4 installation.

The final step is to download and run the HoF Assets Checker. If you don't understand the report this gives you, seelct Save report and open the file it creates in Notepad. Copy and paste the text here.

Civ4 AssetsChecker has been running for 9 hours and I have 0 results.... it just says "Reading Files..."

I really don't think you need to leave any program running for nine hours before deciding it's hung!

I have PM'd the HoF team to see if they can help you.

What operating systme are you using. I assume that that you are using windows XP sp2 or sp3.

I have not heard of AssetsChecker hanging up before. Are you using an Admin account on your PC ? I don't know that it is required for AC but it can't hurt. Are you runnning a firewall that might be blocking AC. Normally, those things popup a message asking for permission. If you have it automatic configuring then you might need to go in a give it permission.

Did you have the .NET Framework 2.0 or 3.0 installed? There is a link on the AssetsChecker tab if you don't have it. Normally, it should fail right away if you don't have it.
