New Unit: Ettin

Intriguing sound files Vuldacon, what is your source material?

Thanks Vuldacon.

COAtlantis1745, First, I want to say that I think the sounds you have made are Great! Love the Monk Sounds.
I used many different sound files that seemed to have nothing in general that would really fit, so I edited and mixed parts of many together and tried to adjust the time to fit the animation. I have many sounds I have collected and made that I use or find them Online for use. I make many sounds myself to fit what I am looking for. I did use the Samurai Attack Grunt from the CIV Game as the Fortify sound. I just decreased the speed and added an echeo. All other sounds were mixes of several parts of sounds I had. The Attack sound was a mix of 6 edited sound bytes and the Death was a mix of 4 for example.
... All Civ3 .wav file formats are at 22,050 Hz, 16bit Mono, 43 kb/s so I always edit all sounds to that standard. I use the standard Sound Recorder that everyone has with their computer and my Mic is built in the Monotor...Funny what sounds can be made with a simple kitchen container and your voice...just edit, adjust, Mix etc with the Sound Recorder. A Real Must have is an Absolute Silent.wav file to use to adjust the sound time and to remove any unwanted cracks and pops. Let me know what you think of the Ettin sounds in game. They were adjusted for loudness and timing but it would be good to know that they work as intended for everyone else. One Last Point...the most difficult sound timing to TRY to make work for any Foot Unit is the RUN because without a ".amb" file, one sound has to accomplish BOTH Feet sounds and due to the Game and animation times....causes "Headaches" to make work...

Hey Kinboat, you sure you don't want a job in a company like EA or something? I would say your 3D model look 10 times better than what we have in Ultima Online.

Another great unit from Kinboat of course. :goodjob:

I never said I wouldn't want a job at EA :) No offers so far :D

Kinboat does your real work has something to do with graphics? Just being curious:rolleyes:

Thanks mate! Im glad you liked my mixes. Iam thinking lately that our unit makers could use some talented soundphiles like ourselves to aid them in the creation process, hehe. You know, before you filled in the job, I was about to take a shot at this unit myself. I was going to play off of the Ogre unit sounds from Warcraft, and fiddle with them a bit. I am particularly fond of the "click on" dialog they say, would make for some pretty funny fidget sounds.

I hear ya about using common everyday materials for sound generation. Oh, how I would love to be hired on as a foley artist! I am an absolute sound nutbar. If it doesnt sound right, I get pissy hehe.

The Run action sound is always a problem without the .amb file. The sound level spikes quite a bit if you use a straight wave file. I have countered this somewhat by reducing the run sequence to 25% of original source, that way when it spikes, it sounds just about right for someone running along.

Have fun! :)

Well yes and no... I work in a library, but I do sell some paintings and art work on the side.

COAtlantis1745, I wonder how difficult it would be for the Animators to make .amb files for the two footed units? That would enable not Only easier but MUCH better sound control in game. We can add the Run Sound for most units that will suffice for one move but the problem is for mutiple moves across several squares. The Timing MUST be absolute or much of the time the unit Run sound will play after the unit stops. I find THAT very Annoying. As for Kinboat's Ettin, the Run should work well using any number of moves...I have him Running 2 Squares (all Terrain as Roads =6 squares) Hehehehehe. Go ahead and make some Sounds for him because you could come up with some that may be better...Variety is always good. Check out the Engineer Run sound I posted on the last page for Pesoloco's Engineer. The Timing for the Engineer Run played the first .20 about 4 times per square so I made the sound more Monotone so it would blend and then had the end of the sound taper off more quite...If you ever want some sounds, send me an e-mail and let me know the type wanted and I will get what I have to you. I havea nice sound for Smoking mirror's Chemical Bomb but it is 128 K zipped and I cannot upload it.

I started out on Moray and POVRay... Now I use Poser... I also do some modeling in 3DSMax.

Yeah and I'm amazed at the units you make in it... I could never get a human to look right in that program.
