New Units: High & Dark Elf Cavalry

I don't see why it wouldn't be Tolkien like to have a curved sword for elves. Even orcs used scimitars.

I do not know if Tolkien ever troubled to explicitly say what shape Elven swords usually were, but that the orcs used scimitars probably suggests the Elves had straight ones rather than the opposite. However, what I was getting at was that in illustrations and other art, Elves in the tolkienian tradition typically do use European-medieval-style straight swords.

Now, if the makers of a particular mod are happy with their Elves wielding curved swords - or thermonuclear hand grenades for that matter - then the more power to them.

Well the movies recently done have gone with a curved blade for their elves... Actually I believe that sword is based on the blade used by Arwen at the ford in the movie. While I have some issues with the way the movies were translated I think they did quite well translating the setting and props. In fact if I remember correctly they had two of the top 'Tolkien' artists working with them to get the right feel.

But these units aren't specifically Tolkien elves, are they? They're the generic Tolkien-rip-off Elves, if I may say so uncontroversially. You know, the D&D or Warhammer elves that are of human stature, rather than the diminutive Santa's elves type -- which would normally have been what we'd have associated with "elves" in the absence of Tolkien's work.

That being so, I see no objections to the curved nature of the swords here. I needn't see them as specifically Tolkien units.

Of course, I do have an issue with Peter Jackson's elvish props, along the lines of what the Last Conformist said above. But for me, that's irrelevant: these guys are dang fine units that could be used in any number of fantasy scenarios. I'm sure the Tolkien mod will use them, in spite of the fact there might be some misgivings with PJ's curvy swords...

Urgh... scimitar is not the same as a curved sword. For example, Katana is not a scimitar. Chinese sword is not a scimitar. Most of the curved swords aren't scimitars.

If I'm not greatly mistaken, only arabic swords are scimitars, right.

;) chill :p

And besides, elves are elegant people - and a curved sword is much more elegant than straight sword. :)

I'm pretty sure Allan Lee, IMO the best Tolkien artist of all time, had a good deal of input.

That's his name... Thanks thestonesfan... I couldn't think of his name :)

Fortunately a little artistic license will not hurt in this case. Will the high elf unit be the Ellyrian Reaver thingy?

Haha, you know what, I didn't even notice that this was an old old thread bumped up with such a inconsequential post! For some reason I thought these were surprise new additions or something.

I believe it is a sword my friend.

I think we need to get a headslapping smiling. I could use it right now for posting here. Old threads revived...again.

It's hard when you are trying to assign stats to the units more based off of warhammer stats (which is hard, admitedly) when the graphical unit doesn't have a combination of equipment that is even possible in warhammer fantasy battle. As far as I know, anyway...my information is somewhat limited.

Like most of the knights using swords, when it's supposed to be lances. Anyway...its nitpicking and ungrateful, perhaps, but I wouldn't call it inconsequential. I wouldn't have made the point if I had seen it was made already. Perhaps they have been made in the main post. If so, I apologize.

Many of the units are of outstanding quality. However, they seem to be made in a kind of generic fashion, rather than along 'accurate' lines. I know this is because of time and effort limitations...I'm sure ED would admit he'd do alot more if he had 10 graphical people on a mystical magical full-time staff. lol. :)

I have a list of want-to-do units which is 50+ lines long... so yeah :p
BTW in case of some units, like this one, I didn't even look at Warhammer figures for guidelines... just wanted generic unit for everyone, and for me since I wouldn't even know myself if I'm gonna use Reavers or Silver Helms. Also it is a matter of model availability - I make units of what I have in the library. Yeah if I had tons of time I'd try three kinds of High Elf Cavalry ;)

Thanks for the feedback and explanation. I figured you probably wanted to do certain things and couldn't. Really, weighing the potential use of a generic unit that looks cool and could also be used in your mod with probably little compliant the likes of mine, against a very specific unit...I guess the former is a more worthy goal, for everyone.

I think the dedication and resourcefulness you've shown with this mod so far is pretty impressive as it is. I can't wait to see what you've done with all the little things, like civilopedia entries and so forth. I myself have been copying and pasting stuff from the games-workshop pages. ;)

Civilopedia in 2.0 is rich, ie. I used product descriptions from GW online store for units as well as stuff from articles from Strike-to-Stun, Critical-Hit etc. (giving credit where I could).
