whats the difference between a new computer and a refurbished one? Aside from the obvious hardware condition and stuff. I've been told you can't update the operating softwares on them.
Sounds kinda off a bit.

I am sure someone here will be able to explain better.
But as far as I know there is no trouble with updating software - you just need to own the OS license and usually buy it seperately, while with new computers you'll usually be able to buy it bundled with the machine.

I bought a refurbished HP machine back in '01. Wasn't too bad. It was an HP, came with s/w and everything.

Err, I think you mean that you cant reinstall that copy of Windows on a different system since its OEM and tied to one specific pc. This doesnt prevent you from buying your own copy of Windows and installing it, or using one of the other OS families: UNIX, Linux, etc.
