I *really* think you should have Kongo in here, especially as Rita Poon made such a good leaderhead for Afonso recently. Kongo was the first real civilisation that the European explorers ran into, and if you want to make the slave trade part of this scenario then that's the obvious theatre for all that...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this set just a wee bit before his time?

And secondly, wouldn't Kongo be located off the map?

this is an scenario that focuses on America, congo isnt even on my map ;)

I'm just throwing ideas out here, but what if you made one (or more if you want) African countries with just one city, their capital, and have them produce slaves every turn... and then the European players could negotiate for the purchase of the slaves?

i had the same idea..
but how keeping europeans from conquering it?
and also need a slave resource, for the buildings ;)
so i let europeans settle the coast to gather the slave resource, if they like (its a bonus in the game but not realy needed, to reach your goals, but will make it easier.)

Well, you could always do both... maybe make several African states that have access to slave resources that produce slaves that can be traded, but if the Europeans want to take over the business, they certainly can do that too.

Giving the Africans super powerful defenders that are Immobile could also be used to prevent them from being conquered too...

And you could leave a few slave resources outside of the Africans' territory for the Europeans to settle for themselves if they want...

It could be a good way to have early access to slaves before there's been much colonization.

the slaves will remove the whole jungle in africa ;>
beside that, im not sure the AI will do well in this concept.

im not sure how the ai would handle superstrong imobile defenders (had the idea for some european citys)
maybe the other AI players are sending out all thier troops to the african city, that wouldnt be so good. ^^ because the game should take place in america ;)

If one were married to the idea of buying slaves from African civs, making it so they could only produce workers, had established contact with the Europeans, and were completely surrounded by impassable terrain might permit this. You could even still have the slave resource along the coast for more variety.

Yes, the impassable terrain would keep them from cutting down all the jungles in Africa... and you could even make the impassable terrain look like jungles.

Then you wouldn't need super strong defenders either.

True, that map doesn't cover Kongo (I overlooked that, since the map for the original Conquest does have it). But the time scale is right - Afonso was king in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Of course if you prefer to focus on America it's entirely up to you. But it looks like I sparked off some debate, at least...

i also resized the map for this scenario a little bit, i cutted off some nothern useless parts and the western area behind the rocky mountains to increase playability, and making domination victory possible (even with the lowest value of 15% it wasnt possible to reach ^^)
scenario map size is now 282x336, still realy huge ^^;;
also i set ocean squares in the inner part of sahara (sounds weird i know), desert is impassable and there are enough squares around it, so youll never recognize this in the game, but i had to do this to reduce useless land terrain.

actual civ list:
Europe: Spain, Portugal, England, France, Netherlands
N.America: Iroqouis, Cherokee, Sioux, Anishanabe aka Ojibwa, Appaches, (Shoshone/Cheyenne)
M.America: Aztec, Maya
S.America: Inca, Chibcha, Tupi, Mapuche

next both civs are only for trading, all european nations got contact in the beginning of the game

Kongo: source for Slaves
Germany: source for Settlers (still have to see if it works)

tech tree advancements:
im doing fine, with 1st 2nd and 4th era, just have to fill out the 3rd era.
in the game, all civs from the northern america, Tupi and Mapuche will start between 1st and 2nd era, Inca Aztec Maya and Chibcha will start at the beginning of 3rd era, europeans will start with 4th.
there are some civ only techs, so for indian nations, mesoamerican, inca/chibcha and southamerican and for sure european.

units:

units are mainly different between european and american nations, but also differences between the americans ;)
maybe someone could provide me some suggestions or ideas...

Could you make the map standard without africa

I modified the map that came with the Conquests scenario by pretty much eliminating the european part and reducing the european capitals to one city islands. My inspiration coming from S.M.'s "Colonization". It works pretty well as the AI is forced to explore and develope the New World instead of spending their energy attacking each other in europe (a whole other mod). I created a resource called "europe" and placed it on each island, I guess I could have used flavors but this seemed easiest so native american civs couldn't build european style units.
