I am hooked on this game, just got it this weekend. I want to know how to get tanks and planes etc. quicker. i finished one and just started building them in 2035. Plus what should I start out building when I first start out. i.e settlers, scouts. any help would be appreciative. thanks

Welcome to CivFanatics dallasrocks! :) I'm pleased that you're enjoying the game.

The technologies that start to open up opportunities to tech' towards the modern units are (arguably) Physics and Steam Power, so keep them in mind when considering your technology tree.

You can do a lot of damage in any era, but chasing Steam Power puts you on a path to Chemistry, and is only a technology away from Steel ... giving you Grenadiers and Cannons ... which can really cause some mischief when in packs (Stacks of Doom - SoDs). You can use these Industrial Age units to expand your empire while tech'-ing towards more modern units for upgrading.

When starting out, consider the land you've been given and the technologies that you start with. If you've got a coastal start, some seafood close by, and begin with Fishing, then a Work Boat might be your best bet. If you have a Grasslands-Gems resource and know Mining, then a Worker would seemingly be a good move. Every situation is a little different.

If you've yet to read it, Sisiutil's Guide is a terrific resource for newer players.

Enjoy!

Welcome to PCP.....err, CFC. You've got tank and planes, but do you have Mother F'ing Snakes on a Mother F'ing Plane? I thought not.

Seriously though, read Sisiutil's guide as Cam_H suggests. You'll be making tanks and planes in 1835 instead of 2035.

Or you could cheat and go into custom game and start a industrial/modern start

after reading some guides (sisiutil's being the most famous out there), you will find out that the game winning thing is growth.
It can be "horizontal", from building settlers or vertical, from growing cities.

once you have 200+ population points working commerce tiles, you should tech a bit faster. My guess is you have 4 or 5 cities, size 10, while the AIs have 20 cities, size 16+.
