Ok in Civ2 you could irrigate anything that is near water.
It seems in Civ3 that you can only start irrigating by a river....someone clarify this and add more info about irrigation :)

There's a difference between salt water and fresh water. Lakes up to 22 tiles can be fresh water as well.
New irrigation must be next to fresh water or existing irrigation. The discovery of electricity makes this requirement obsolete (you can pump water up, so to say)

No, but you are! :satan: Wanted to know if you realy didn't had to pay for them! Maybe I will build two walls now that I know they are free for upkeep. Two of my cities are still quite small. The rest is to big for walls...

In a World Map, how do you make your civs start at a starting position.
Like England starts off in England, France starts off in France ect ect ect

i just got it today from an unknown source ;)

Shabbaman: why don't you add:

Official Newbie Qs Manager

into your sig ;)

SunTzu: you can assign in the ediotr as Shabba said, but you HAVE TO play that as a scenario.

Is max size for freshwater lake 21 or 22? In the game I am playing, I have a 22 tile saltwater sea, if the coastline pattern is to be believed. It's been said before, but for SunTzu's benefit, you can tell whether a water tile is fresh or salt by the amount of food it produces: a freshwater tile produces 2 food, saltwater only 1 (obviously, must do this on a tile without bonus resources)

ok well i go to load scenario and i have all of those world/europe maps that i've been playing.....can i have realistic starting positions on those games?

SunTzu: you need the *.bix (PTW) for these scenarios (or *.bic from Civ3).

Open them in the editor, do as described in the FAQ, save again. Now start the game and choose 'load scenario'. presto - you have the starts where you want them ;)

(In awe with your culture)
Greetings everyone,

I’m with the DSD (Dutch Stoned Division) We play Return to castle Wolfenstein (NET) and Sudden Strike II. (LAN) We recently started to play civ3 multiplayer. (LAN)
I have a newbie-question.
The information states that roads produces 50% more commerce. So I made roads on almost every tile within my borders. Now I have some doubts about this tactic.
Do all roads within my borders give 50% extra commerce or only the ones worked by citizens from my city?

Thanks in advance

roads and other improvements only give a bonus if the tile is actually in use. Open the city scrren and check (you can assign citizens to tiles by clicking tiles to remove them and then clicking others to have them worked).

Roads give 1 extra gold when worked by a citizen in one of your cities, not 50%. If the manual says that then it is very poor.

At 50%, cities not on rivers and without resource bonuses would never produce gold...

Last night I was fighting the Romans on one front and the Germans on another, I was using Mordern Armor and I got four leaders in a matter of... ~15 turns. I rushed them all back to my capital and I made Armies out of three of them. I sent these Armies back out and won a battle and started making the "Heroic Epic" and one other small wonder ( I can't remember which other one as I type this). The Modern Armor units that gave me these leaders I renamed Modern Armor #1, #2, #3, #4 and they of course are elite units with an asterisks.

My question is what do I do with the named elite Modern Armor units? Should I place them in the Army? Why do I get to name them and why do they have an asterisk? Finally, do they have a higher than 1:16 chance of generating another Leader? Can they generate another leader?

Thanks

You should indeed place them in the amries. Units with a * cannot prodcue leaders - because they already have. As Modern Armour cannot be upgraded (the * would be removed) you better place them in the armies as armies cannot produce leaders anyways, so you do nto loose that capability ;)

No need to take them leaders to the capital, btw, you can build an army from a leader in any town ;)

btw: the 2nd wonder will be Military Academy, once you have it you cna build armies in that town - and rush them, too!

Thank you for the information. England has only four cities left, I finished off the Romans and Germans last night. I need to hurry up and get Russia's spaceship. The spaceships are only in the capital city right? I hate going for a conquest victory and being on course to win, only to lose via the spaceship route.

Hi,

Looking for confirmation of default values as it has been a long time since played pure default settings.

Can a Destroyer see a sub in default rules?

I think in civ3 the default is no but yes in PTW.

Thanks

okay, how do you turn debug mode off while playing a game. It irritates me when i have to keep watching the AI build their cities and move there units. I would also like to turn it back on when needed. Please help.
