:mischief:

Toaster with the apple logo?
No one insults my computer like that :nono:. It's a PowerMac G4 Cube.

I had the icon laying around, opened it up in Fireworks, messed around a bit with transparency and stuff, and had myself an avatar. Recently added the US flag background to it.

Anyway, I had a question on leaders. Usually I play the game peaceful until Tanks (they roll over everyone else, as long as you are the first to discover them!). Sometimes I dominate once I get tanks, sometimes I go peaceful but take that opportunity to steamroll the next-most-powerful player.

Anyway, for the first time now, I am being militaristic from the start, and having good results (Regent difficulty)...that's how to best get another city!...but I have one overlying question:

How often do you get that vital first leader?

It seems like I've won 20+ battles with elite units and still have not received my first leader! I know after the first one, some wonders become available to increase odds...but how do you get that elusive first leader? I've only ever had one leader in my whole Civ3 career! (Though, like I said, this is the first time I am going all-out militaristic.)

Thanks,

Sam

Great Leader Post at CivFanatics

There is a lot of information in that thread covering Great Leaders. Start near the bottom with a post by Mike of Firaxis. It continues through a number of posts with Firaxis giving a lot of information over several pages of posts.

Awesome.

Now why does it never happen? Is there less of a chance to get one defending that attacking?

Does it have to be an elite defending unit?

just kidding about the last question :p

Maybe you're unlucky (the ai doesn't attack you ? ;) ). But I got *defensive* GL only on very rare occasions - dunno the odds. The ai *likes* to get such GL.

Yes, the chance is halved on defense. So it is only 1:32 instead of 1:16.

Yes, only elite units can generate leaders. But you can have a veteran unit that is attacked several times the same round. It will automatically become elite after the second victory that round, and have 1:32 chance of creating a leader for every defensive victory after that.

just kidding about the last question :p
I didn't notice :crazyeye:

BTW, Grille. The reason that the AI gets more great leaders on defense than the human player is probably that it has to defend a lot more. I generally attacks much more than 10 times as often as I defend in my games.

TNO, that's what I thought.
Also regarding ai-ai combats, the offensive ai often attacks with SOD, but with bad odds for a win, eg infantry vs infantry, which leads to lots of elite defenders.

--Is there a way to name individual units, such as a single cavalry unit renamed to "7th cavalry" or something like that.

--Or can you only rename leaders and armies? And how does that work? I've only received one leader and I created an army and named the army, but I don't see the name showing up.
Can you rename leaders?

thanks,
Ben E. Gas

I'll have to try that. I thought I tried that last night and it only gave me an option to 'activate or disband' the unit at the very bottom of the screen. I'll try again later.

thanks.

P.S.

---How do I trade luxuries and resources with a civ that is not on the same continent as I?

---If I have a connon or catapault on my coast, can I bombard enemy ships? I ask, because I'm counting on them as a defense from enemy invaders in my current game. I hope they can.

Both continents need a harbor which has a road to each of the trading civs' capital. Additionally, you need a safe sea route. Coast is safe from the beginning of the game, sea as soon as one side knows Astronomy (or has the Great Lighthouse), and Ocean when as soon as one side knows Navigation OR Magnetism.

Yes. The low defence of ships also means you will score hits easily. The AI will withdraw damaged ships very quickly, so just a few catapults are effective coast guards.

Later in the game, airfields will substitute for harbors. in setting up trade routes. If airfields are in both capitals, you might not need a road or railroad from the airfield/harbor to the capital. You still need a road/railroad from the resource being traded to the capital of the country trading that resource, unless there is also an airfield/harbor on the resource

Its can be difficult to detail exactly what you need. You can trade the resource if it is in your coulture boundary and roaded/railed with a connection to a city that is connected to your capital, perhaps by air or sea, and a port/airfield, or if you have a colony on the resource, with a road/railroad to your capital/port/airport. There may be some exceptions where cutting off one of the capitals from roads and bombarding its harbor or airfield if any to non-existance will cut the trade route. Trade routes that go though enemy territory and out their ports are even more complex. By declaration of war, sometimes inadvertantly you can take significant reputation hits by cutting off your trade.

A complete answer is probably more complex than you need.

Why doesn't the General discussion thread discuss Generals?

I personally like the look of the Cube a lot better - runs a lot quieter and is a lot sleeker. Too bad Apple decided to discontinue it - looked cool, even though I wouldn't buy it.

Sorry, DiamondzAndGunz. It was late and it really did look like a toaster at first. (although the apple logo did clue me in pretty quickly that it was an entirely different appliance)

I went looking for a page on this cute little device (but powerful, very powerful...don't get me wrong ;)) and was surprised to find this link on the main PowerMac G4 Cube Support page: osXP?

:D Seriously though, that is a very nice looking case. A friend of mine has one at work (never actually seen it) as well as several PCs and he mentioned heat problems with it. Have you had any problems keeping it cool?

barron of ideas, I think of Great Leaders as generals myself and GLs are discussed quite a bit. ;)

What is the exact effect of map size on distance corruption?

In addition to affecting distance corruption for close cities, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the FP doubles the OCN. Is that correct?

the FP does indeed double OCN :)

Yeah, I run Win 98 on my computer occasionally, thru Virtual PC. It runs too slow for me to get anything done, but... hey, I don't have anything to get done. So it's all good :). Here's a different site I looked up if you still want to get some info http://www.apple-history.com/frames/body.php?page=gallery&model=g4cube

I haven't had any problems keeping it cool. Did he, perhaps, upgrade the processor? Mine has the 450 Mhz processor, and runs just fine... nice, cool, and quiet. I was, however, thinking of upgrading it to a 1 Ghz processor. Only a couple hundred bucks . Could use a second hard drive as well, but that's gonna be a little harder to fit into that case... hmm.

Ok, um, methinks that's enough threadjacking for today. Especially since I can't really answer your question :o.

I am trying to add an avatar to my name but have not figured out how .. it is probably super easy, but I don't see it...
