Shift-d does the same & is a convenient alternative to that mouse-click-maneuver for a tremulous hand when it comes to negotiations with an awfully strong & extremely nasty civ.
The "D" will appear when you have gained the first contact to another civ. Sometimes the "D" appears w/o having met a foreign unit, but reaching their cultural border, thus providing possibility of negotiations.

Your question may have simply been overlooked, or nobody knew the answer. In either case, let me point out that this question is more appropriate to Site Feedback. Check out the thread, Can't Vote In Polls.

(Unless you're talking about the UN votes in the game, which is another subject, entirely. :crazyeye: )

Would it be possible to use artillery from a ship located in the ocean to fire another ship ?

JMK

AFAIK no. You can activate a unit on a ship, but I think I tried that once (hoping to bombard a coast for a landing) and the option to bombard was not there.

Probably just as well, otherwise the transport with 6 (I mean 8, I think!) artillery would be a devastating bombardment device! :)

Thank you, that's bad news, I have hard time in my current game (Emperor) to defend against a huge american fleet. American built Magellan and can stay out of range from the cost after having destroyed terrain improvement, I though I could maybe fight them loading a few cannons into galleon and go to them along with 2 or 3 iron clads, but your answer in not what I was expecting.

JMK

If you are playing unmodded, bombardment CANNOT KILL troops. And until the units are eliminated, improvements are immune, IIRC. So just station some troops on the key improvements you wish to defend, and the americans wont be able to detroy them. At least that way you can keep any luxuries or resources connected.

If they seriously outclass you in ships (types or numbers) that's all I can think of.

Unless you have cruise missiles, those have lethal bombardment... but then you'd have to wait another era. Good luck.

Shabbaman
I knew about cruise missiles, it is a very nice weapon to sink enemy naval units, have a SOD of transport loaded with cruise missiles, a couple of carriers each loaded with 3 bombers and 1 fighter, a couple of submarines ahead of the SOD and 2 to 3 battleships, and you are the king of the ocean, but as you said I must wait for another era...

this is kinda stupid but i tried a hotseat game(with myself) when i first got PTW. I after a few turns i found it very boring/annoying and so retired. There were only 2 civs (me and me) so when i retired (as the americans) the other civ won a "conquest" victory. It is a horribly high and unrealistic score and it is now at the top of my hall of fame. Id just like to ask if there is any way to delete my hall of fame? Or just that score. And i dont mean just getting rid of that particular civ's entry(s).

recon:
activate the plane (either wait for it to become active in order, or click on it)
recon is the sort-of binoculars, click on that mission icon
then click on a tile within range - the recon reveals any units within 2 (IIRC) of that location. It's as if the unit magically teleports to that location, it lifts the "fog of war" in that area, then it goes back to base.
obviously recon is pointless if you can already see those tiles, and it wont reveal subs or other hidden units, IIRC also

If artillery could bombard from transports then their would be no need for battleship bombardment as it is weaker. It would greatly unbalance the game.

So, I think I posted this question in the wrong thread the first time...in any case, I'll ask it again here: which Wonders would you recommend going after in particular (which ones are have the most valuable effects). Thanks,

Houarno

when it comes to wonders that is very subjective, plus greatly depends on map size/type. While the pyramids wouldn't be much good on a tiny pangea map, with mostly water, they'd be one of the best if you played a large or huge pangea map.

And the style you play too. For example, JS Bach's would more appeal to an ICS (infinite city sprawl) player than other styles. I think that the ones that are good on any kind of style would be Smith's, Leanardos', and Theory of Evolution.

I couldn't agree with you more HB (that's for the avatar... i've been slack, i know)

Quick wonder guide:

Pyramids: One of the best wonders. Limited value on small islands.
Lighthouse: Very good on archipelago maps.
Colossus: Good but needs to be in a good (non-corrupt) city.
Great wall: more or less useless
Hanging gardens: Good but not crucial
Great Library: very good if the AI outresearches you but of limited value on easier levels.
Oracle: more or less useless since it becomes obsolete so fast

Sun Tzu: very good on Pangea maps, crucial for warmongers.
Sistine chapel: nice, especially for builders. Not essential.
JS Bach: extremely good on pangea maps.
Leonardos: very good on large maps, where you have lots of units that need upgrading.
Shakespeare's: only good for its massive cultural value. Essential if you go for a cultural victory.
Magellans: not as good as the Lighthouse.
Copernicus, Newton's: good if placed in your best science city. Not essential.
Adam Smith's: extremely good, especially on larger maps with lots of cities.

Theory of Evolution: essential on all levels and game-breaking on higher levels.
Hoover Dam: extremely good on Pangea maps.
Women's suffrage: very good, especially if you are a Democracy.
UN: essential, either to win a diplo victory, or hinder the AI from doing so.

As hurricane wrote the choice of wonder should be done according to your goal.
Should you want to speed up your research, building the colossus (in a non corrupt city) and later either Copernicus or Newton's will be very good.
Myself, should I play on pangea or even have an island with at least 10 cities, I will go for the Pyramid (Monarch and lower level), JS Bach, Adam Smith's, Theory of Evolution, Hoover Dam (both wonders will go toguether) and of course the UN which could be essential if Diplo victory is set 'on'.

What happens to the FP if you build the Palace in that city?
Can I get it to disappear by doing this?
Just looking for a way to relocate P and FP without disbanding my FP city.

Thanx.
