I just discovered this. But until today it has never happened before. I've always used the plant forest/claer forest mehtod in the past to help shield-poor and corrupt cities with their production definciencies. In my current game, I've cleared all original forest in my territory that are within city radii and had ten shields go into the production box every time. Now that all original forests have been cleared, I must plant first then clear, but when the newly planted forest is cleared, I get no 10 shield deposit in the production box. Has anyone else experienced this or can anyone tell me why this is so?

Because the powers that be disabled forest clearing ---> shields except once per tile in one of the patches.

then it's time to undertake great Worker projects like building up a weak opponent to use as a pawn against a strong opponent!

Same here. In this system, the lame is... me! :smoke:

Re lumberjacking:
-Renata says it all, I'm the lame...
note that you can't change a *regular* build project (like temple) to a (small) wonder or palace when project has already benefitted from forest chopping
Re air superiority:
-as mission won't prevent ai from bombing (although they *should* know, imagine ai knows position of fighter, but not its mission)
Re naval warfare:
-bombing isn't fatal
-do a recon mission, spot enemy, move a vessel in such a way to have enemy within vessel's visibility range (if possible, spare movement points - don't skip), start bombing run(s) to damage enemy, sink rest of enemy with vessel; this way, you should cope with mentioned recon problem
-have a task force big enough (if you have a game with navy skirmish, keep your stuff together - beware of *single* missions)

Wait, if the AI knows the position of all your troops, then are they just being stupid? Maybe it's the chieftain level. But I once declared war on the Babylons, and from stealing plans I knew they had a lot of bombers right next to their border. So I built a lot of jet fighters and almost all the bombers got intercepted - hmm?

I have yet to find this out with PTW and 1.21 patch but I know from civ3 several times AI asked me to leave its territory when my only unit violating its borders was submarine. I thought subs couldn't be seen except with other subs. Go figure. AI doesn't need submarine to see yours. I REally hope this has been fixed.

Invisable units can be forced to leave,

but Pirates can't! Privateers and other units of hidden nationality have this right.

I thought that was fixed in 1.21 - saying that you can no longer force an invisible unit to leave.

Also, can Great Leaders be captured? Killer says they die, but I think that logically, they would live. They have no A/D so they can't be killed!

They get killed, AFAIK. I think it has something to do with the fact that units your civ can't build get destroyed when you try to capture them. For example, if you haven't researched replaceable parts yet, but try to capture an AI artillery, it will get destroyed instead of captured.

diplomacy for more than 8 civs
I'm talking about the "d" on the little box to the right. This is not PTW or Vanilla Civ specific, it is there for both. I always use this unless I am accessing the diplomacy menu after the "what's the big picture" screen. I really don't care to see their faces before talking to them, especially if I already know their attitude more or less. The "d" gives you a straight forward list that you can go straight down if you want instead of in a circle and the "shift-right clicking".
ai knowing your troops' position
Although this is a blatent AI cheat, you can use the AI's knowledge of the map to your advantage. Usually AI movements are geared toward the best piece of land where there maybe a future resource, for example.

In an earlier post of mine I explained that I built an outpost on a coastal mountain but didn't see the benefits. An outpost is supposed to give vision two tiles away, three if on a hill, and four if on a mountain. My mountain outpost is useless; being two tiles away from my cultural border, I can still only see one tile beyond my border- a total of only three tiles away from the outpost. If I had known of this outright disinformation, I'd never have wasted that worker. Can anyone tell me anything relating to this?

its really 1 on flatlands, 2 on a hill, and 3 on a mountain. The only reason a hill is actually usefull is that it can see 2 squares regardless of terrain. The same holds true for mountains. Thus, you could see over entire mountain ranges with outposts. On grasslands it is useless.

If you want to see far into the sea, make sure it's a coastal mountain that you build on.

I read a post somewhere concerning the uselessness of fighters. True. I've never seen one of my fighters shoot down an enemy bomber. Irritating. Except for recon misions. If you know enemy naval units are just outside your territory but cannot readily see them, you cannot bomb them with bombers unless you move a naval unit of your own within two tiles of the target. But suppose you have no naval units in the area. You do a recon mission to expose the target. But then you only get to do one bombing mission then the target disappears again.

This was fixed in one of the patches. A reconnoitred area now stays visible through the whole turn, no matter how many bombers you send there. So, download the latest patch now! :)

Hello. I bought my CivIII in the UK, but notice there is only one English language version of the v1.29f patch.

Does this mean that my CivIII is the same as a US version? If not, is there any way to tell which language variant I have?
Yes, there is only one English language version of CivIII

I want to buy the US version of PTW (so I can get the v1.21f patch) - will it work with my UK purchased version of CivIII?
Hence, yes.

Galcador: Are you using the US 1.21f PTW patch with a UK version of PTW? If so, that's great news!

*My* understanding (along with many others here) was that there were some problems when that was done. I would dearly love to be wrong on that point! :D

No! Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I was saying that for (vanilla) CivIII, there's no difference between UK & US versions. So, someone with a UK sourced CivIII can expand with the US version of PTW (and hence use the 1.21f patch).

Hello all true Newbie here, so I figured where else to begin. I am sorry if these questions have been asked a thousand times before, I really did try to search for answers here but it is a bit much to look through. Questions:

1) Do most of you controll your workers manually?
2) Is it possible to load Crackers GOTMs that were recorder on earlier patches. I was trying to go through his examples with GOTM8 but for some reason i cant load the game to follow along.
