When I build the Lighthouse wonder, I still have galley's lost in treacherous water...why?

Is there a difference between the lighthouse's abilities in Civ 2 and Civ 3?

They are only save on sea tiles, not on ocean tiles.

That is why I could not answer Loyalist's post... here is my cut and pasted answer:

Welcome, but these style of questions should be directed to teh Newbie thread. Ask at the end, no need to read the whole thing and you shall be served.

Since I am a nice guy, here are the answers

1) make sure you have enough food tiles being worked. You need 2 food for each point of population in the city. (Sometimes, there is an inbalance and your city has one extra food, it will grow and then starve and continue on.

2) Tax people increase your income and scientist increase your research. Each specialist adds 1 (coins or beaker) into the budget. I also do not think that they can be corrupted.

Sorry about that.

Hehe. I'm not really sure which ones are the food tiles, and is there a way to gain extra food tiles?

1. Is there a maximum number of population that is recommended in a city? I have 10 in my capital now.

2. how big is a good defense force. Is two per city enough?

3. In order to avoid the 6 pop limitation, does the river need to be in the city limits, or actually next to the city square?
Thanks

Almost any tile is/can be a "food" tile (mountains and deserts being the exceptions). What he is referring to are tiles such as Grassland, which give 2 food per turn that they are worked, and others that give food bonuses, like Wheat.

And, no, you can't really gain *additional* food tiles, although when your culture border expands, you will have access to all tiles within your city radius.

BTW: Welcome to CFC! :D (Hope I didn't confuse you by moving your thread. ;) )

Does the agression level of the civ you choose to play as affect the other AI civs?
For example, if I choose to play a civ with an aggression level of 5, but play them as if they were 1, would other civs still be suspicious of me because the "level 5 is hard-wired"? (I know it can be changed in the editor.)

If so, then I can choose India with a low default agression level and play them as if they were a 5 and sneak up on everyone! Yes!
(Calm down Darius, calm down. Sorry. ;)

1: I go for the largest possible in each city. So the answer really depends upon your playing style and the game situations.

2: Again, this depends on your neighbors and the location of your cities. My norm is 3-4 defensive units in boarder cities and 1 or 2 on interior cities. Make sure your boarder cities are the best defensive troops available.

3: To go past pop size in 6 your city needs to be next to river or you must build an aqueduct (Tech = Construction). To go past 12 you must have hospital.

Loyalist: sorry I was not too clear in my post. My bad :wallbash:

Thanks Padma.

Now this is a really stupid question, but how do you exactly utilize cannons and catapults?

Bring them up next to your target (which could be a unit in the open, a city, or a terrain improvement) and either click 'b' on your keyboard or click on the bombard icon (one of the gray action buttons that will show up when any bombard-eligible unit is active). A target grid will pop up; choose the square you want to hit, and hope for success.

One key: bombard units have no native defense at all; if you leave them alone they will be destroyed or captured by the enemy. So have them accompanied by a defensive unit at all times.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers

If you poll the members here I think you would get many different answers. The AI appears to use artillery as an extra defensive unit when you try to take cities. I try to bring a stack of artillery pieces with me when I invade and bombard the cities before I attack. This is so that I can lower the defender's hitpoints down before I launch my attacks. I may leave a piece or two behind to add to the defence of key cities and positions.

Is it the city square, or just any of the nine city tiles?

The city square has to be next to a river or a lake (with the size less than 22 squares). :)

Hospitals come with Sanitation, in the industrial era.

The hospital is an city improvement. Not sure with which tech it comes with.
