@shabbaman - Yeah, I'd have to look. But I bought an external USB Zip drive to take my saves back and forth between work and home, when I was at a previous job. And I do usually play large maps. . . .

If Im paying with more than 8 civs (in vanilla civ 3 v129f), how do I view the other 8 in the Foreign Adviser screen??

Tnx

Assuming you have made enough contacts, shift-right-click on any leaderhead on the foreign advisor's screen. Then you get a replacement choice.

Thanks a million!

I thought this the first time but I think i have a buggy version, a few turns later the last piece, spaceship lounge became available and it launched, this didn't appear as necessary on the spaceship screen previously (i have 1.29 but it is a licenced downloaded version from infogrames / trygames.com, no cd required  )

I was playing my first game of Civ3 on chieftain level. When I got to 400AD I found that I was so far ahead of the the AI civs that diplomacy and trading seemed a waste of time, plus the other civs never attacked me. I am going to start over on a higher level. Is Warlord significantly more difficult, or should I jump to the next level? (is it Regent?).
Is the difference in levels just about how aggressive the AI plays?
Thanks

vincenzo,

Warlord will not pose difficulties at all if you found it that easy on Chieftain.

Playing Regent will give you a challenge, and IMO will help you become a better player faster since you will be forced to deal with a tougher AI and have to make more meaningful decisions. Even if you lose your first game you will be beating Regent a whole lot earlier than if you go to Warlord next.

AFAIK, the only difference in difficulties is the bonuses you and the AI get.

Pretty much yes, and on the higher level the AI gets more bonuses. You should try warlord, the level after chieftan just so you get the idea of the game. You should try and beat a level and than climb up one and beat the next level and so on. Of course than you might get stuck on like monarch for 5 months ;)

There are additional changes besides the AI bonuses (and there are different kinds of AI bonuses). One is the number of your citizens born content: that goes from 4 on chieftain to 3 on warlord to 2 on regent/monarch to 1 on emperor/deity. More than that number of citizens in the city and you need to use lux tax, military police or whatever to keep the city from rioting. Dealing with this effectively takes a little practice, and is one reason the warlord-regent jump can be a little painful.

Other changes are the corruption rate, which starts to increase from monarch on up, and the number of beakers required for each tech, which starts to increase at the same point.

Is there a way to change the default save game name in PTW 1.21f? I don't like the "Osman of the Ottomans" type stuff.

Cheers

yes, just type over it in the dialog box. :crazyeye:
No, unfortunately it isn't possible to change the default for future saves to a different format. Even if you change the name, the next time you load and save, it will come with the original default of Osman of the Ottomans again.

@smcSoon: While saving a game, if you click on a name in the list, the dialog box will change to that name, allowing you to replace it. So my suggestion is to save a game the first time, re-typing it as you like. After that, when you need to save, just click on the same name, and overwrite the old one.

What's the best way to keep up in tech with the AI at emperor&deity level? I'm guessing TGL and researching the techs that the AI doesn't prioritize (ecology/printing press/atomic theory etc)?

Anything else?

You can use C3MT to change the leader names, great leader names, etc. Load up the game and go to the last tab, type in whatever name you want.

Tech brokering is extremely important, in addition to those you mentioned. This means you every round check with the other AI:s for trading opportunities. Say for example there are 4 AI civs.

Civ A has Engineering and Feudalism, but not Monotheism
Civ B has Monotheism, but not Engineering or Feudalism
Civ C has none of the above, but 1000 gold.
Civ D has the same techs as A

You have none of the above techs, but a nice positive gpt income.

Now, by buying Monotheism from civ B (for almost all your money), you can trade it for Engineering&cash with Civ B, for Feudalism&cash with civ D, and for all those 1000 gold from Civ C. In the end you might end up with 3 new techs for no cost to yourself. The difficult thing is to spot these opportunities.

Even more likely, though, is that two AI civs will have similar techs, but one will lack one of them. (If they had opposite techs they usually would have traded already, in my experience.) Here's a more typical set-up for excellent trading:

Civ A: Engineering, Monotheism, Feudalism
Civ B: same thing
Civ C: Engineering, Feudalism
Civ D: Feudalism

where you have none of the above. You spend your gold to buy Monotheism from the cheaper of Civs A&B, then recoup the price by selling monotheism to Civ C for engineering, then monotheism and/or engineering to Civ D for feudalism. The middle trade will occasionally net you some cash as well, but more typical is you have to chip in yet a little more cash due to tech devaluation. The third trade can often get you a fair amount of cash back since you'll have two techs to sell.

The above would be called a 3-fer, since in effect you get three techs for about the price of one. (2-fers, like the above example would be if you already had Feudalism, are more typical, but less lucrative.)

I just started a game on Regent level, previously I played Chieftain. I only have 3 citizens and already there is civil disorder. Is Regent level more touchy about this? The only thing I can do this early is leave a warrior in the city. Is that what I need to do?
Thanks
