Is it worth going from Monarchy to Republic? Unless you are Religious (in which case you don't have to worry about turns in Anarchy), it seems to me that it's usually not worth losing several turns to Anarchy. Better to head straight for Democracy?

vincenzo: there's no reason to complete FP before changing gov, just change gov when you want to. However, the FP might get completed faster under republic due to lower waste.

David:It's worth changing to republic!!! It's not worth waiting for demo (unless the techs republic and demo both come in within a few turns - which is unlikely to happen), you might even stay in republic for the whole game, i.e. when you like to start wars and aren't relegious.

I had a size 7 city with a granary. It had about 15 food stockpiled (out of 40), when I built a worker. The city size went down to 6, but afterward I only had 10 food (out of 20).

Is this a bug? Usually, when I build a worker, I have just as much food in stock as before. But something funny seems to happen when I go from size 7 down to size 6.

Hi,

Is SDI more effective in cities near the capitol? I just played a game for a while after I had won because I wanted to get some of the later techs. China declared war and I tried to nuke his capitol but it took approximately 12 attempts before it got through.
I thought it was always 75% chance of intercepting nukes, but if that's true I had a pretty severe run of bad luck.

Thanks

Nope, the SDI covers your entire empire.

You're right about this... you just had some extremely bad luck. Welcome to CFC! :goodjob:

Thanks morkaphi, that's what I originally thought but after this experience I had doubts. BTW, this was the first time I had used a nuke and had only one civ declare war on me. I was smart enough this time to form alliances with everyone I could first.

Usually you don't get to rename a unit when it gets promoted from veteran to elite.

If you are offered to rename your elite unit and it has an asterick by its name, that means it generated a great leader already. Under the unmodded rules, an elite unit has 5 hit points, and the generation of a GL doesn't increase any additional hit point for that unit. When possible, if you upgrate that unit, it will become a veteran with 4 hit points, and will be able to generate another great leader when promoted to elite. :)

You might want to avoid renaming units which win and produce a GL.

I found that if I renamed a Elite unit which produced a Great Leader, problems occurred when time came to upgrade that unit. It apears that the type of unit was embedded in the name (e.g. Knight) and if I renamed it to "Victorious Knight" it was no longer upgradable to Cavalry.

I suspect this is a bug -- they actually wanted to let you name the leader, but applied the dialog box result to the wrong unit...

d8575, do you have a save file of that? In my experience, it does allow you to upgrade the knight to a cavalry, however the new cavalry is still called "Victorius Knight" which can be confusing if you aren't expecting it.

Yep, I renamed my Samurai as Ryo Hazuki and then upgraded him into cavalry. (Not really an upgrade - more of a side-grade)

@d8575: Are you sure? I've never experienced any problems with upgrading renamed units.....

d8575,

I think that was a bug in one of the early Civ3 patches. I think it was when they first introduced renaming of elite units that it happened.

I also believe they fixed it by Civ3 1.29f.

Which version are you playing?

Yes, this can be doubly confusing if you accept the default option to 'rename' it to its existing name, then later upgrade. I've had many a cavalry called knight.

I noticed sometimes people refer to causing a war between the AI civs.
How do you do that ?
Thanks

Is there a way to activate all units of the same type? For example, I'm at war and want to activate all my MA without having to go to each individual city. Seems like you could do it similar to how you do mass upgrades but I haven't figured it out yet.

I have just about defeated the nasty Romans that invaded. I ended up losing a lot fewer mil units than I expected. I have 125 military units now. I do not foresee any wars from Egypt, my underdeveloped neighbor on this continent. But I have no idea what awaits when I head to other continents. (This is my first game where I got this far).
Is 125 military (50 of them are defense units) way too much, or is it reasonable? It is 1160 AD, I have 22 cities, I am working toward a scientific victory.

Also, I have built 5 galleys. Are they used for anything other than exploration, and is 5 a good number to start with?

Thanks
