This is probably an old question and if I had an ounce of patience I'd go look it up for myself somewhere on the forum but I'd rather just ask.

lots of possible answers, game balance, inaccuracy of bombard fire and so on. So we need to be carefull to distinguish between these and typical FAQ-content questions.

A "newbie" post is clearly a violation of the forum rules, since, with little difficulty, one could not only find the appropriate thread to place the question (namely, the newbie thread; aren't posters supposed to find an appropriate thread? 'get your answers here' sounds like an invitation to me...) but even find the answer to that answer without difficulty (faq thread rings a bell? war academy?)! The only reason I see that such threads should be tolerated is, indeed, because a poster 'doesn't know better'... Well, they have to learn to catch up.

You couldn't be more wrong.

That's like starting a thread entitled "Discuss Civ3 Here" and closing all other threads about discussing civ3.

Thank you Knight-Dragon. All this time I thought a newbie was a person who did not know much about CIV3 and asked dumb questions or at least questions that had frequently been answered before.

It is much less an insult to be called a newbie if it refers to how long you have been a member of the Forum.

Do you suppose part of the reason for flamewars has to do with how the newbie reacts to his understanding of the term (you inferior player)?

Perhaps others thought as I did, that it had to do with asking dumb/and or often asked questions that demonstrated lack of knowledge of the game.

I have asked my fair share of frequently answered questions and have always been treated well, so perhaps I have been lucky enough to follow the rules. Or found patient people, such as yourself to explain what seemed to me to be a mystery.

No, being a Civ3 newbie is no black mark at all, and being called newbie isn't an insult. It just means that 'we', the more experienced froum members and Civ3 players see 'them' as someone who will likely ask themselves the same Qs as we did, make the same mistakes, try the same things in Civ3 - and we want to help them as efficient and quick as possible. Period.


Aside from that - with every new patch I'm a partial 'noob' again, and I am a total 'noob' to C&C (creation and Customization) - what's the problem if someone say to me: Hey, C&C-newbie, if you'v got a Q then ask it here or check that thread for an answer!'


NONE, no problem at all - I am glad I

a) got pointed to an answer

b) know where to ask / lurk best in the future

Period!


So do not feel bad about being a newb - everyone makes fresh starts all the time. And be considerate of newbs once you are in the stage where you cna answer more questions here than you haev left unanswered yourself!

To Portugese:
Thank you for the praise, barron is a homonym, with at least two meanings, barren (not having any) and a relatively low level of nobility. intenting to idicate a low level of creativity (as opposed to the Emperor or King of ideas) What I intend to convey, most of the time, is that I have these thoughts I want to share, and some of them may be gems, but need polishing.

Does your Handle indicate Portugese residence? I spent a lovely summer in Portugal, Caschais (spelling?) a suburb of Lisbon in the mid 1960s when my dad was stationed there with the SHAPE mission to Portugal. We lived about 4 houses from the president of Portugals summer home, I think it was Admiral Tomas (but it was a long time ago.) YOu could tell when he was in residence there were about 3 policemen on duty outside. At that time Portugal had at least 5 different security forces, this was under Salzar and the war in Angola was still strong. And there were no coca cola ads, which were ubiquitus next door in Spain. Nearly everyone was short, I think it was nutrition, rather than heredity.

I would go back, Lisbon is a lovely city.

Thank you for your message, I did not intend to indicate I am inferior, or anyone who is a newbie is inferior, what I wanted to say was that one of the reasons, possibly, for flame wars when someone is called a newbie is that the person so named is unhappy because he thinks it is a term of abuse, to indicate he is ignorant and/or stupid.

If "newbie" means you haven't been on this bulletin board much before, it is a far more objective description of the situation and does not, or should not, carry any cause for rancor.

As with so many things in life, problems can be averted if we carefully define our terms. With 27 posts, how can I excape calling myself a newbie, certainly in comparison to someone such as yourself with well over 5,000!

At ten a day that is 500 days, how long has this bulletin board been open, two years? Wow!

As it is easy to see, I'm from Oporto, Portgese 2nd biggest city, and the 3rd people with more Portguese in the world (after Lisbon and Paris )

It was Cascais, And yes, it is a good place to visit
Next time go for Sintra. It's near and even better

Tomas was president for +12 years, de to the dictarorship at the time... and the summer house is great.
Salazar didn't like foreigners strange inventions
It still has many different security forces (and my father in one of them )
