Look, its raining! Again!
I think these forums would benefit from having a forum for newbies to intruduce themselves. Just to say hello and tell everybody a little bit about themselves etc, etc...

It was one of the things that first struck me when I satrted browsing around here (before I registered), I was surprised to notice that this place has no Newbie introductions place whilst almost all other forums I have been on have one of some sort.

I think we all would benefit from having a place like this, so if it's not too much trouble for the mods/admins I think you should consider it.

And this is my first post.

Personally, if a newbie came by and told us about himself, I wouldn't give a crap about what he says. :p (J/K)

Really, though, although the idea seems sort of nice, it also sounds sort of pointless. I mean, who would read a forum about people giving short summaries of themselves? I like getting to know people, but it's usually better done over time, while related to things. In other words, IMO participating in the Off-Topic forum (along with the other forums) is probably a better way (or at least more interesting way) to get to know someone than hearing them say, "Hey, I'm Bob, I like Civ and pizza. I have three brothers and..."

Just my opinion. :)

Edit: However, this is probably a good idea for a small forum. There, when a new user joins, people actually might notice, and want to get to know him/her, and a thread or forum for introducing yourself might make sense. But in a forum like CFC, where a dozen or so people join each day, it's not quite the same.

Actually on second thought I can see where the idea may go wrong. With the size of the forums and the ease at which you can register the forum could easily become swamped and there wouldn't be enough time to reply to everybody.

Thanks for the wise words.

I try to get to know people through their posting style. :mischief:

If I notice you, it means either:
a) You're doing something good :D
or
b) You're doing something baaad.

I don't really like to :hammer: people, so, please, let me notice you for "a". ;)

Makes me wonder if Padma noticed me because I'm good or because I'm bad :hmm:

Anyway.... I can see how this would be useful in a small forum, but this forum has atleast 5 people register aday. 35 people in a week and 150 in a month... With so many people registering this forum could be more of a problem then anything else.

The best way for newbs to introduce themselves is to simply jump in and start posting. What is the point of "hi, i'm here", "oh, hi, welcome!!!", "anybody here from St. Paul??", "no, but my cousin lives there, he has a pet poodle", "it isn't a french poodle is it?", "ahhhhhh"

;)

It has always been our policy to treat veteran poster or new person EXACTLY the same, I would oppose any attempt to make such a distinction.

That would be ideal, but unfortunately it just doesn't happen that way.

You've been a member for not even 2 days....you are the last person who should be making a comment like this. I think the mods do treat veteran posters the same as newbies....the fact is, though, that newbies tend to break the rules more often than veterans.

Yeah, the way it happens is that people new to CFC who break the rules tend to get it easier than veterans who break the rules.

You saying you'd rather the mods came down as hard on new people as they did on the oldies? ;) :crazyeye:

It certainly does on any forum I moderate San. ;)

If someone acts differently, please feel free to 'Report post', and I will deal with it.

Oops, sorry about that comment, I think it was interpreted the wrong way.

I meant that normal posters (not the mods) often treat newbies with a different attitude to vetran posters. Sorry to any people who I offended, it just came out wrong.

It's ok, I'm sure no harm is intended. ;)
