News: BOTM 11 Results and Congratulations

And @kcd_swede / zagnut / Deckhand. Why? Were you trying to avoid food?

I was planning to do the corn/pig in the second city and didn't want overlap. I wanted the cow forest and hills in capitol. This would have worked OK if you put the copper where it was in the test game, btw. It was sub-optimal as it was, though. A sub-optimal choice from sub-optimal reasoning.

The lower the difficulty level, the stupider I get.

This is the revised map with ZPV's game in it.

ZPV founded twice as far away from the start as Jesusin, in the same general direction. I don't know what that would do to DS's image, which would have to be nearly twice as wide as it is now, or half the resolution.

My script uses an (arbitrary) fixed width of 750 pixels, set to ensure that (a) the tiles are clear without the image using too much bandwidth, and (b) if anyone is still using an 800px width monitor, they can still see it, so it's the resolution that suffered :)

Maybe we should impose a score penalty for people who wander too far East or West, thus spoiling the first-city-placement map :mischief:

And God, I really need to improve the algorithm for ordering the lists of players, to stop the 'arrows' from crossing so much...

there is easyer way - you can simply improve start position like settler on a plain hill with marble, corn, rice... mybe cow and horse... one or two green gems and one or two plain hill gold.

Yeah, that would surely make "challenger" class saves meaningful .

For added fun, put cow and horse on the same tile, as well as gold/silver/gems and a floodplain cornrice.

How to differentiate adventurer and normal class saves then?! Adventurers start with those 3 tiles improved already .

Oh, so you mean, so I maximize the incentive to settle in-place. I think that's an excellent idea. How about if we make this the starting screenshot for BOTM 13 when it's released?

(And don't worry about me pinching your great ideas without crediting you for them, I'll make sure when I announce the BOTM that everyone knows it was all your idea!)

jesusin, contender, going for culture.

I'll settle in place in the hopes there is fish 2S.

What I can't understand is why we can see the tiles W but we can't see the tiles E.

There is only one interesting thing: how often we will have land shaking if we settled in the place? I believe it will be settler level game and we have neighbours enough close.

Hey, thanks for doing this, I appreciate it. Sorry for causing you so much trouble. :)

I promise to settle in place at some unspecified point in the future. (BOTM13 by the looks of it. ;))

It'd be pretty easy to win from that start on low difficulties especially with England (starts with fishing).

Sailing and bronze would be pretty key to whip the galley and workers.

Hopefully no random event volcano garbage. I really hate random events in this game in general. Perhaps BOTM is the place where they absolutely least belong. If two people execute otherwise identical axe rushes, 2-3 mining accidents in the BCs (which I've seen) taking copper away from one will hurt his chances of succeeding in the rush a bit, and will 100% certainly put him behind a guy who didn't have that happen who is equal skill.

Barb uprisings, forest fires generating a lot of early "whip", and diplo events that cause -modifiers and a DoW could all easily impact the game negatively for a completely equal player. Unlike HoF where people who have patience for garbage luck manipualtion via game spam can benefit from events, we only get 1 chance at this, too. Granted, I've played so few BOTM games so far (and not high level) that it's not hurt me too much yet...but in theory you could have 2 unconquered suns playing and one would lose first place to the other entirely due to factors out of his control, while playing the map identically to the winner.

But...I guess that's just opinion. For some reason, people seem to like garbage events. It reminds me of how everyone on Halo loves shotty/sniper or other massed power weapon spawns...
