This was an unusual game with quite a hard start, partly because the nature of the map was kept secret, but mostly because you had to cope with an icebound island with very few sources of hammers. And this was reflected in less than 60% of submitted games being victories - an unusually low figure for monarch level.

So - congratulations to all you Santa Claus's who braved the snowy North Pole start to whatever result. Amongst the winners, I guess we should really challenge Duckweed to explain why his spacerace win was so late (1605AD). No, only joking, that was an unbelievable date especially given the start, and I'm sure lots of people are hugely appreciative of the advice you gave in the spoilers. :goodjob: Fastest spacerace, silver medal AND the cow. Kaitzilla and zamint3 took the gold and bronze medals with pretty impressive domination results. RRRaskolnikov made the top 10 despite being the only person to try the challenger save. And I'm sure Vynd will be very happy that noone else chose conquest, allowing him to get fastest AND lowest scoring conquest by default.

Here's where everyone settled. And boy, did that icy start manage to scatter everyone! I think donsig takes the prize for doing the most exploration.

The Small Print:
The numbers by each player's name indicate the turn settled on (starting turn is 0). Players are colour coded by game class (challenger=red, adventurer=blue). Symbols indicate victory condition, if there's no symbol then the player either retired or was defeated. The yellow border indicates the land that was visible at the start of the game.

D'oh, I forgot to submit.

Congrats to all.

Sorry am I being blind or is donsig not on this map?

Was a wacky & fun map, even if many of us failed badly at it.... it was still fun to give it a go :) Always up for something a bit different! (well, as long as there are the odd "normal" game too..... like BOTM 38 for example :)).

Well done to all the winners especially duckweed & his awesome write-up/guide!

Donsig settled on turn 7. Its the little number next to each name.

Isn't it unusual with all the different start spots chosen that nobody settled in place?

Very interesting map. I'm not sure where I would choose to settle even seeing the whole map. But not where I did... not after iron was revealed.

Congrats to all.
Ho, ho, ho, second BOTM and I'm "awarded" again. I suppose it will became a tradition, as I'm "aiming" on lowest conquest in BOTM38. If I manage to win it at all.
I really need some rehearsal from Duckweed about REXing.
And it was enormous pleasure to play this game. I still can't believe I managed to finish it! Satisfaction priceless.

Well, at least it didn't cost me too much time :) Congrats to all the winners, great thanx to the mapmaker - very interesting game.

Oh yeah.. I forgot to say: Congrats to all the victors! This was a lot harder game than it appeared at first glance. :goodjob:

Ho, ho, ho, second BOTM and I'm "awarded" again.
Perhaps these "lowest score" awards should be renamed "most efficient victories". You won with the minium civ... that's actually quite an accomplishment! And lots of us would be more than happy to trade our places on the finish list with yours. :goodjob:

Well kcd_swede, the formula is simple: no more than 5 cities in 1AD, no more than 10 in 1000 AD, remember to be 3 to 10 techs after leading AI and all joy is yours ;)
I'm terrible at REXing, but I suppose I'm becoming master of modern warfare tactics :D

And thank you for encouragement.

Great concept, thanks for the map. Some really interesting write-ups too!

Congratulations to the winners! And especially to Duckweed and jesusin for their outstanding fast victories and their very educational spoilers of the game!

Wow, two medals at once. I am indeed thankful. :) Especially for the admins who came up with the really nifty map.

I settled in place and as you can see, it was so bad that I got frustrated and quit well before I had enough played to submit!

And I was just thinking of replying to kcd_swede to say I was relieved noone settled in place, seeing as it was such a relatively bad place to settle. (I'd hoped that would be clear to everyone from the starting screenshot; Evidently it wasn't quite. Sorry you didn't have such a good game this time :( ).

When designing the map, I tried to make sure that, no matter which direction anyone explored in, they would fairly quickly find spots that would give a reasonable capital (as reasonable as it's possible to be given the constraints of being near the North Pole).

Nice to get the fastest diplo finish award, especially after messing with the UN votes in some of the previous BOTMs. :)

Congratz to all who managed to push a victory from this icy start! Can't stop admiring the outstanding games by Kaitzilla, Duckweed and Jesusin (thanks for write-ups, Duckweed)!

And thanks for the Christmas scenario, DS! I'd like to see more of these special maps/scenarios in future BOTMs too. There have been some interesting-looking games in vanilla GOTM section lately and it would be a blast to get similar BOTMs too...

Actually I triggered both domination and conquest the same turn (and I was going for conquest! :old:)

Grats to everyone and thanks for the map DS!
