COTM 96: Engerland!

I don't know what's become of civ_steve, so I thought I'd try putting together a game to keep you amused. Naturally, I thought of asking you to play as England, and as Lizzie last featured over three years ago, that seemed to fit. As I'm a beginner at this, I thought I'd keep it simple, with just Open class, but you get to play with Raging barbs.

The game starts on April 2 and runs for six weeks to May 17. That avoids any clash with family commitments over Easter, and temptations to make April Fool jokes.

Now I'll try to clear the Results backlog.

Civilization: England
Rivals: 7
Barbarians: Raging
Difficulty: Warlord
Land Form: Archipelago, 70% ocean, Standard map.
Geology:4 billion years old, Arid and Temperate.
AI Aggression: More aggressive

I hope everything is well with Civ_Steve and I am glad you have picked up the torch AlanH.

Conditions for this game could provide some early nasty surprises. Raging Barbs means fog busting is critical, though with a Archipelago map it may not be too bad if the island isn't too big. The starting location doesn't have an excess of food, so the quick building of settlers to fog bust probably isn't an option. The mountains will provide a nice place for a Warrior on fogbusting duty.

More aggressive probably means that if you have close neighbors you won't be able to leave your cities unguarded. If the other civs are the Germans, Spanish, Zulu, or Aztecs, count on them introducing themselves early.

Under Conquests IIRC, we are Commercial and Seafaring, losing a Scout which would have come in handy. We get Alpha and Pottery to start. At least Alpha gives us a headstart for the Philo free tech race. The Man-O-War can enslave ships so this gives us a chance to control the seas if we get them early enough.

Arid and temperate indeed! Even though moving to settle on the Fur loses the Sugar, it keeps you on the river and the extra shield to start is a definite edge. Growth is going to be slow anywhere in the visible starting area. Perhaps a migration might be in order. I'm thinking move the Settler to the Fur then if no other resources are revealed, decide where to send the Worker. Perhaps Worker first 1NE to the hill but that only reveals 1 tile on the north side of the River. Worker 1S or 1W reveals 4 tiles, but the many plains tiles don't look to encouraging.

I guess a trip to map builder is in order to try out the different moves.

I've never done a COTM before, I'm probably gonna try this one.

Of course a seafaring civ which doesn't start in the coast is such a pain for me and I don't like archipelago maps, but that's not exactly a big deal.

I'll give it a try anyway.

Nice to hear that. I doubt anything is going to be really hard on warlord, but of course the fun is in beating the other players.

Just remember to take care with the raging Barbs. It can set you so far back you can never catch up, even on Warlord.

Try a test game using the same settings.

Since I currently reside in England it makes sense to play the game. My first try for England and raging barbs in Civ3 though.

Welcome :) :wavey:

Don't forget you have to submit your first play-through, with no replaying to change a result!

Have fun.

Sorry, real life got in the way of the results. I'll post them tomorrow. See my new thread on future games.

I've never actually played a G/COTM through to submission, though I've tried a few out of interest. I'm not really a strategic enough player to play competitively, although I've enjoyed the challenges civ_steve has created.

That said, I think I'll give this one a go, as it's Warlord and so I should be able to at least not lose to the AI, even if my score seems paltry to some of the other players on here!

Thanks for keeping this going, Alan!

This just sucked up most of my afternoon - damn that 'one more turn'.

Unfortunately, my ageing Mac caused it to crash, so before I reopen anything, I just wanted to check the COTM rules. I have been saving every 500 years or so - my last save was 775BC. I have an autosave from 730BC. Which is more legit to use?

I should probably take a break from it for a while anyway, but just wanted to check before firing it up again.

Cheers!

You should have autosaves set for every turn, then you would only have to replay the current turn. You latest save appears to be the 730 BC autosave, in which case you have to reload that save and play as accurately as you can, trying not to second guess any decisions you made the first time.

OK, thanks for the advise. I'd been keeping a turn log, so fortunately I can just repeat what I'd done before from that. Apologies for the autosave setting - I didn't realise you could change it to that - I'll try and change that now so I don't have the same problem in future.

Cheers.

Alan, what about a little more time? i better ask early than go sorry... i think that schedule lately does not indicate such a hurry, does it... :mischief:

;)

Well, I was trying to get back on a regular release schedule. However, if you guys have become accustomed to a more leisurely pace, I can extend the close dates to - what - six weeks?

sounds good. i think it was Lanzelot who suggested if we had games running simultaneously, we could even have them run for 2 months, until the second next game.

most of us seem to have come into an age where we have children, jobs, and still enjoy our competition here. so it would make sense to extend the time we have to play so we can cram those games in we want to finish. at least this would be true for myself. :)

Your call. Six weeks duration takes it to the start of the next game of the other variety. Two months takes it to the start of the next game of the same variety. Either way, your actual schedule will depend on how fast you finish each game. If you are slow to complete your games, then you could have two or three games running concurrently.

An overlap would would mean that, assuming I am reasonably prompt with the results, you don't see the results of one game until AFTER you have played another one or two games.

i think everyone has become used to that :)

only speaking for myself, i would even prefer the 2-months period over one of 6 weeks. 1 month gets too short for me most often. also my time schedule won´t allow me to play every game anyway.

maybe someone else wants to utter his preference for one of these two choices?
