News: Game of the month for Civ V - feedback appreciated

So we are looking forward to Christmas present - another TSGs. :D
I think you are going to get one. :xmascheers:

In case you haven't been following things, 2KGreg posted in the 2K forums the patch will be out soon.

The essential part is:
Update 12/9/2010: Finally, the speculation can end! Today I have the patch release ETA. As you may have heard, we just announced that new DLC will be available to purchase on December 16. I can now confirm to you that the patch will be released before the DLC. The exact release date is still a tad flexible; it could be a couple days before the DLC, it could be an hour before the DLC. But hey, that's why they call it an Estimated Time of Arrival!

We will prepare TSG5 once this has happened. :)

The other useful present will be a nice assessment of how different the game will be after the patch. Seeing things like reduced non-siege ranged damage to cities, reduced siege ranged damage to units, faster city HP regain, etc., we will have to be playing with our eyes open!

You could simply note that players need to change their Steam settings to not auto-update and that TSG is to be played with a certain version.
I can't seem to get steam to set permanently to not auto-update. Every time I boot back up, it seems to be reset to auto-update ...

Are there different settings for updating steam itself vs updating particular games? Maybe I have missed something? :crazyeye:

I don't think you have missed anything. We have had this discussion amongst the staff and maintaining no auto update seems a tricky thing.

kind of a necro here. But as this is the feedback thread I didn't want to start a new one.

Q: What about using the VEM unofficial patch for future GOTM?

Well, I never really used mods in any CIV franchise. I like to play vanilla as it is the way the developers wanted it to be and how it is played by the majority of the players.

However, I tried the VEM "patch" (not the full mod) and it has a great value for the player without altering the game mechanics too much. Since the Vanilla version lacks many basic stuff which is included in the VEM patch, I wouldn't mind to use this patch for the GOTM competition.

Just asking...

Currently, we are running the Training Series of Games because we lack the contents of the .dll file that will allow us to, hopefully, build a mod that secure saves to ensure integrity of a GOTM competition. Recently came across VEM, but have not tried it. We are a bit reluctant to require a mod to play GOTM that we do not provide. The GOTM Staff decided to play the game as provided by the developer until we can get such a mod developed.

thx for the quick answer!

BTW: Do you have a link for me that explains what a DLL actually is? I googled that, but that info is a little bit general and doesn't help me much (I don't have much experience in programming or modding). I keep reading about this "DLL issue" here and then in this forum, but I don't know what it really means for this game and/or mods.

I mean there are quite some mods out here that obviously work without this DLL. So what is it for?

EDIT: So I googled a bit more. Am I right, that the DLL is kind of a compression mechanism? And without the right "key" to this compression mechanism it is more difficult to mod/work with the data of an application?

Sorry for my noobiness...

See what you can glean from this?

The .dll file contains the source code for the game. When we have the .dll file, we can see exactly how things are set up within the game and can figure out how to make mods by changing the .dll file. The new .dll file replaces the existing one and the changes you want get made. I am not a modder so I do not dare try to explain further. :)

The essentials of the game are contained in the .dll file.

It looks like they're working on releasing the DLL finally. On the horizon: Pitboss and DLL Source

Yesterday I mentioned in another thread that a patch is coming soon. Head on over there if you haven't seen it yet.

Well today, I want to let you know about a couple more things that are on the horizon: Pitboss and the DLL source code. These things will not be in the aforementioned patch, and are still many months from being ready for prime time, but I wanted you guys to know that we have a team actively working on these two things. I don’t normally like to tease these things so far in advance, but I know how much some of you have been craving both of these (I have been too)! As stated in the past, these will be free updates for everyone. As always, as soon as I have more detailed information about either of these I’ll bring it to you. :)

It's still months away, but at least it's "coming soon".

Just thinking... I really like the game of the month, but I'm not very good at CIV 5 yet. Usually I learn from Youtube - looking at games that are uploaded there.

Comparing ones strategy to a good player could be very useful and fun. So, anyone out there who would like to do this? - I mean uploading and commenting on his or her strategy of a months game...

:wavey: Welcome to CivFanatics and GOTM.

Players are doing this already. Off the top of my head, DaveMcW and Tabarnak have both linked YouTube videos in some of the recent the After Action threads. Please have a look and good luck.

Yeah, I just found a link from Tabernak on game 26. I'll keep on looking. It's fun.

This may have been asked before, but do you ever consider doing GOTM DLC games?
I can see why you don't, as that would make the audience of these games a lot smaller.
