News: GOTM 21 Pre-Game Discussions

I am stunned! As far down as I had to dig in the available avatars to find that nice image that I interpret as da Vinci examining his latest war machine, I never expected anyone else would use it!

Yet now I find I have an identical twin! Hello, long lost brother! ;)

There are ~32500 CFC members and ~700 standard avatars - you do the math(s) :p

Well, I should have not been surprised then. I just remembered how deep I had to go to find it.

But I'd been thinking about a change anyway, and found a nice photo of a model of da Vinci's tank.

I am guessing that your avitar is safe from imitation! :mischief:

 Nothing like peronalized content ;)

IF I can get to this game in time, I'll prob start off with a farm or two on the FPs, then cottage them when I've pumped a few workers and/or settlers.

I created a test game using the new mod. Everything should be the same as the starting screenshot. No resources were changed, I only moved those slightly that weren't compatible with the terrain type. I tried to duplicate the starting position on the map as closely as possible.

Rivers are a pain to get right

8 rivals?
Is that 8 total Civs, including Egypt, or 9 total?

9 total

Will the water level setting be disclosed before the game?

I believe it is disclosed as medium

As for my start, i think i will do something similar to GOTM 20 with immortals. Settle in place for additional hammer in capitol. get out a worker, a warrior, then a settler. Agriculture gives farms, so i will go AH for horses, mining, BW for gold, copper, slavery and chopping, then Beeline alphabet for trading. First warrior out exploring, second warrior out for a worker steal. Second city by horses, then rush the nearest opponent to gain some cities and go from there.

Raging barbs will make me rethink the second warrior out for a worker steal strategy, and the aggressive AI lends itself to making more war instead of less, so i am inclined to clear some space for myself early.

I think I'll tech: AH, Cottages, Mining, then to Alphabet. I'll farm one or two Flood Plains and cottage the others. I'll cottage over the farms when I need to. My warrior will explore and look for a worker steal, but I'll be extra careful here. I'll build a worker then a warrior (or two) then a settler. Settle by the horses if they are near. I don't think they will be in the fat cross of the capital, but they hopefully they are close.

I'm playing a test game with a similar starting position. I just started it, and want to see how it goes.

Surely you have a few photos on your own computer, any one of which might make an avatar that noone else is going to have :-)

You have noticed the new one haven't you?

My criteria are, in order of importance: 1) da Vinci theme 2) not duplicated in the forum (or at least not in the GOTM forum) 3) Military theme

I think the da Vinci tank fits the bill pretty well! :goodjob:

If we settle in place by the lake, do we get automatically connected to resources/cities down the river?

I assume not - because you should see a coin on the hills when connected. So it seems you have to build at least one road to get connected to the south.

Extra units?
I think that's what the lawyers call a "rebuttable presumption". Though it does raise the question: what sort of Adventurer bonuses could there be that don't involve units? More techs? Better resources like the extra gold a few GOTMs ago? Money? (not useful right away, but possibly helps out with poor economies later) . A larger area un-darkened at the start for better information?

Well, my criteria included a) Tricia Helfer, b) unique, & c) maybe I'd include Adama if Tricia didn't take up too much of the available avatar space !!

Actually, my second choice for an avatar was the cover from the featured celeb pictorial in the February 2007 issue of a well-known gentlemen's mag with the initials "PB" previously owned by the Hefner family which had a Cylon in their birthday suit... anyway, that's gotta be off-topic. Besides, Edward James Olmos was not anywhere to be seen on the cover in that particular photo ...

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE THIS MONTH !!

I sometimes got confused by other people using "my" avatar, and thus changed to something more unique.
In order of decreasing importance :
- unique
- big mouthed
- french touch
I'm not too afraid of being imitated

Now for something completely different, I may or may not play this game, but hatchepetsuh was my favourite vanilla leader.
War chariots are great vs barbs, with sentry, they greatly increase your fogbusting, and if some barb still shows up they can either crush them or run away (letting the AIs deal with the barbs :)).

Lakes has no worldwrap right? I'm too lazy to open one, but I seem to remember that from the last GOTM that was on lakes.

No. Lakes *does* have worldwrap.

Well, I will tackle another GOTM - Downloading NOW. ;)

I will have to take a break in my PtW games to play this GOTM but it is an attractive game with a chance at a good score by all... Thanks for making it attractive enough to drag us back! :p

first time i'm trying GOTM and well the first time round didnt work made a couple of bad decisions and i was under attack by too many civs.

on my second try now going much better but still dont have much of an advantage.
