That's up amongst the most sadistic starts ever dished out in GOTM history. Only the difficulty level makes up for its shortcomings. Just where (before Map Making) are we going to get enough food to build a settler...? Or is that grass to the SE?

Awesome start...

What's hidden in the fog 2SE? A back of an elephant?

I believe so. It sure isn't a food bonus.

Looks like a dead cert for a 20K to me. I can count at least 6 shields. Add to that a coastal location for colossus, great lighthouse etc you couldn't possibly fail. Worker south, if nothing helpful revealed, settler east and build Rome on that spot.

I couldn't reveal anything NNE, but the ivory is a definite, and probably another one S,SE, which would make both those tiles plains. I think it's an ironic joke: we get a luxury, but we can't grow to pop 3 anyway, so we don't need it.

Got to play this as I've got a bad record as Rome, but monarchy is my favorite level. Probably head south and try to get a settler out ASAP. No need for a granary, that's for sure. Thinking about researching writing then map making, if my scouting warrior finds we're on an island. Without a slingshot in this game, I might end up in Despotism for quite a while.

We stopped supporting vanilla with GOTM 60. Once all players, including Mac users, had access to PtW there seemed little point in producing the vanilla version of the game.

Late start on this one, but that's truly an awful start. We can only hope iron shows up in those hills to partially offset this place.
