GOTM 84 Pre-Game Discussion

I've been somewhat distracted recently, what with raging wildfires surrounding me, and having filed an extension last April 15th, but not having followed up with an actual tax return. So GOTM84 will be delayed a day as these "distractions" go away. But I thought I'd put a post up to give you some idea of the upcoming game.

Difficulty will go back to the bottom of the scale - Warlord. And we'll crank the world size and # of civs up. Give you the opportunity to bop the poor weak AI over the head, if you so desire. :) Take barbarians out of the picture.

I'm still developing map and civ, so I'll take comments about whether you'd like an average or 'austere' start, and if you had a civ to play, who it might be. Since the difficulty level is low, I thought it might be more fun to play a crappy civ under difficult starting conditions - does that sound appealing?

Civilization: Iroquois
Rivals: 13, preset
Barbarians: Sedentary
Difficulty: Warlord
Land Form: Pangaea 60% ocean, Large map.
Geology: 3 billion years old, Arid, Cold

Whilst I doubt I'll find time to play this, I vote for Carthage as the Civ. Waste of space UU. Traits not bad. And a very so-so start (just enough for size 3, with little potential in a 6-10 tile radius - say plains with a few wines but no nearby fresh water?) but not a bloomin' Gilligan start! At least a couple of close neighbors but with good starts, good early UUs (Rome, Iros, Greece, Persia, etc.), and the resources to use 'em. Try to rig it so they get techs early e.g. put Iros close to Japan (for Wheel) and any other Mil civ (for WC) so they can get HBR early.

Commercial/Industrial is a pretty nice combo of traits (with the most expensive set of starting Techs). And any easily available UU is probably better than a late appearing UU.

Could swap Commercial out and make them Exp/Ind?

How about turning off Swordsmen and Horsemen for the player? Only offensive weapon is the Archer until the MA?

Or give small pangaea with many food bonuses and shields around and see how many BC victories can be achieved

It'd be nice to see a Civ not seen in a while. Exp on Warlord is pretty powerful even w/o GHs, unless it's a Gilligan start. I would say Rel+Com (Com on Large Warlord? really what's the point...?), but India have appeared quite recently.

Well, I selected the Iroquois, in part because they haven't been played in a while, and also the Starting Techs have the lowest trading value. OTOH, the Mounted Warrior is awesome ... if you can find horses :mischief:

To assure an austere starting location, you are on an island with limited growth. From there, it's up to you.

I haven't turned off MW's and Swordsmen for the Iroqouis - just made Iron and Horses a little more difficult to find. (It could have been worse.)

First post updated with game information.

well, that is a crappy start, all right.

Guess it's explore until we see the end of our island, beeline MM, build a settler, get to the actual pangea, find horses (hah!), take over the world....
