Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 130
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the 130th game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

Must Read!
We would like to ask you to abide by our most sacred rule: Don’t replay any turns! If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to 1 turn. In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous save and play it as closely to how you played it the first time. Please let Leif, Knowtalent or me know (either in the forums or through Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG -- Must Read if you are new to our Game of the Month!
Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any game-related info once you open and play the save. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread: This thread is used to discuss the game's opening decisions and strategies through the first 100 or so turns. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. We encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshot. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

Results and Congratulations thread: We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). We will issue medals to the top 3 winners (based on earliest date finished). There are no long-term records kept for these results, they are just given out to top finishers to reward their efforts.

File Upload System
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends April 1st, 2016.

The save will be available for download on March 1st, 2016, midnight Central Standard time (UTC -6:00) in the US.

The Save can be found here.

What a start, and its an archipelago? This will be fun. I'm settling in place and might split tradition with liberty or piety so that I can save and abuse legalism once I research education. Per war academy:
Spoiler :

Siam's University replacement, the Wat, can be gained by having the Education technology as well as Amphitheaters and Libraries built in the first four cities. Opening with Tradition and waiting to take Legalism allows Siam to set up a minor infrastructure investment for a large return; gaining 4 free Wats after Education provides an immediate significant research and production boost.

Monday can't come soon enough.

I didn't know that this is how the social policy legalism works, I always thought you just get a free monument in your first 4 cities.

You Sir, just opened my eyes.

Yeah but I don't think it's worth it tbqh, going down one SP tree all the way and finishing in good time is much more important

On Archipelago, Mercantilism isn't as useful to have early because you need Harbors to connect your cities. The biggest downside is that Oligarchy is almost a wasted policy. But not entirely, because it helps if you can kill those Barbarian vessels in one turn.

I'm tempted just to go OCC and try for ToA, but it wont be fastest.

One thing that comes to mind is splitting Tradition with Patronage. But, it seems very complicated. You do have room for three picks in Tradition before you have to stall and open Patronage though.

That's why I am planning on only pursuing Oracle as my only early game wonder. Depending on the surrounding land, I'll decide turn 30 whether to open Piety, Liberty, or honor. If there are tons of city spots, going liberty, if I can actually found a religion, going piety, and if I can conquer a couple close neighbors, will fill out honor. 4 Free universities is too good to pass up, as much as it stinks waiting to finish tradition, this can't be passed up.

This would be the way to go, except it takes too long to get to medieval era to unlock patronage. There is no fast path to medieval, theology is the best path but even that won't do it. Guild's is the fastest and most relevant path to beeline to make it work, but even then, it'll delay things like masonry and writing, etc. I don't think you can make it there without opening another tree, even without building a monument.

Actually patronage opens in the classical era, so opening it is no big issue. In previous experiences I had bigger problems with building / buying all 4 amphitheaters before running out of useful patronage policies... either you also open commerce / esthetics or you must go away from optimal build queues.

Its not just the amphitheater but the monument as well. All of which need to be up and running before you finish Education and take legalism. Its a nice bonus if you can get it. Im just not sure it can be done efficiently.

I dont feel like playing it out, but a Liberty/Tradition combo with Republic might be good. For Siam, throw in a Culture CS. You dont need 4/4 even 2/4 or 3/4 free Wats would be something. You have about 100+ turns to put it all together.

the 4-city free Wat strategy is fun to do but not necessarily optimal. But I can't resist when I play as Siam because I dont ever get to play with those particular timings anywhere else. Siam has an interesting cohesion that I think is really fun to mess with. Throw in trying to work in the sailing path (for archipelago) and it's even more tempting to stray the normal path.

If I have learned anything from this series, its how important it is to scout these maps.

I'm looking forward to this, I might make the Great Lighthouse. I also might kill them with amphibious war elephants and then nukes :mischief:

I love diplomatic victory and city states! But I never really got Siam: while it benefits from city-state friendships and alliances, it doesn't have any perks to help maintain them. And while this is only Emperor, Rammy would need all the help he can get. (I've gotten used to how nasty the "first-of-the-month" GOTM maps can get, so I fully expect Venice, Greece and Mongolia to be in the mix.) Which means, I can't really rely on gold from trade routes only. I'm thinking a religion with Papal Primacy and Charitable missions, aided by Consulates.

And I'm very puzzled why would people here want to go tradition? Yea, I get it: 4 free universities. But they don't make money (even in real life ;)).
