News: TSG132 Announcement!

Sweet! Just double checking: All your cities [start with 2 citizens and basic infrastructure] or just the first two from the initial settlers?
I think it was all of them. I settled 3 cities, conquered Monty, settled another while I was waiting for Askia to finish capturing that CS he's at war with (so I can liberate it and be a hero) and I may settle 2 more.

I would just kill Askia outright and have the continent to myself, but I've met all the other civs now and I'm not ready to be universally hated yet. The game is progressing very quickly; I'm not sure I like that.
Did you see the bright red modifier for expanding too rapidly? Or are you just guessing? The rapid expander modifier is not suppose to trigger unless you have five or more cities.
Monty popped up and accused me claiming every piece of land, and there was a modifier about expanding too rapidly but I don't remember if it was bright red or dull red. I said, "Sorry about that, I won't settle any more cities near you". Maybe 10 turns later, Askia and I declared war on Monty and I took both his cities. (Askia didn't even send a single unit into battle, but that's okay I didn't need any help and now he's friendly towards me even tho' I wiped out Monty.)

In my test games, I don't seem to be getting any goody huts (even though I didn't turn them off in the options).

Can anyone confirm that there are no goody huts on a Renaissance start?

Yeah, sebtanic, I left ruins on but I think the game assumed all are taken by the time Ren era starts. I can't confirm this but I did leave Ruins on when I made this game. Im learning something new about the later era starts every time I make one.

For instance, something I haven't learned yet: do Poland players get extra Policies to start in later eras to represent their UA bonus? Would Venice get extra Merchants to represent the extra settlers that others would get? These are just things to consider if i choose to use those Civs in a later era start.

I just had Poland as my neighbour and he did have additional policies (he had 4 in Tradition and 2 in Aesthetics when I met him). Was planning to rush him but didn't play for that long ;)

Another thing, there don't seem to be any barb hunting quests from CS.

Ah, thanks. I was hoping Poland would get their policies. And CSs will give out the barb quests, they did in all my Ren era starts. Some of that depends on when/whether you Pledge to them or not.

Thanks for all that. The don’t settle near us demand is different.

How many cities total did you have when you got that scolding? For rapid expander, conquered cities count. So if you hit five, that would be consistent with my experiences.

I had 3 cities total. It was about turn 3 :) My next two cities were Tenochtitlan and Teotihuacan, and they are still puppets because I don't have national college up yet. I will annex Tenochtitlan pretty soon because it's a nice city.

Not sure if I'll keep playing this or start over and see how opening with Exploration or Rationalism works. First 4 policies in Liberty is pretty strong, then open something else (I did Honor), and come back and finish Liberty when you have enough tiles improved to actually use a golden age.

I don't often play at Immortal level. I had a spy in Gao so I could see what Askia's hammer output was and what he was building. His city only had 30-something production (low 30's) and he was building riflemen in 1 turn. (I can't kill them that fast) My cities have 30-something production, and it takes me about 3 turns to build a samurai and 4 for artillery. He does not have any Honor or ideology policies to boost military production.

I started this war with an overwhelming military force and good supply lines and that bushindo thing, and I might lose. I'll have to keep the AI discounts in mind when I play for real.

That is five cities then. And enough to get the rapid expander diplo hit.

No. I mean I only had three cities at the time. Then shortly after he told me to stop, I declared war and took his cities.

But it could have been because I forward-settled him and took a spot that he wanted (I just barely beat his settler to it and we met as I planted the city)

What is the tech to avoid if I want to build Samuri as long as possible? I think you can still build them after researching gunpowder — but I don’t want to risk that!

First moves will be: western pikeman 2 west - middle pikeman to NW - eastern pikeman 1E to the hill. Possibly also scout with the worker and one of the settlers. Just to see as large a portion of the map as possible before deciding where to settle.

This struck me as very sensible. I had no reservations about SiP.
Spoiler for results of this opening move :
If I use a spoiler, can I say if this was good or bad? What will be the nominal turn for reporting opening actions?

Rifling. In my test game I was avoiding gunpowder for that reason, but Samurai are very weak against rifles, and you can still build them and muskets at the same time.

Apologies if I missed it, but does Advance Start also mean Quick Speed? Building and Tech seem to be going fast, but not just for me.
