Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 51

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the fifty-first game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of new features in Civilization 5 Gods & Kings to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these new features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

In this game, there is no designated VC. You may win by any VC you wish, as all VC's are enabled and results will be posted by fastest finish.

In this game you will play as Nebuchadnezzar and lead The Babylonian Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized mystery map played at Deity difficulty and at standard pace. There is no designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until January 21st to complete the game and submit.

Sorry to say that our Mac players are still patch behind. :(

Please note that you are only allowed to build Oxford University one time. In addition, once you receive your two free techs from Rationalism, and should you switch to Piety, you may not switch back to Rationalism to gain an additional two free techs. :nono:

Civ V G&K - TSG51 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Nebuchadnezzar - Babylon
Number of AI Opponents: 5
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Mystery
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Deity
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Promotion saving is enabled. Quick Combat is disabled (You may now turn it on using the game options menu.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Gods & Kings version 1.0.2.21. There is dlc in this game. You must have Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon, Genghis Khan's Mongolia, Gods and Kings expansion Pack and Upgrade Data 1 to play this game.

In this game, you will be playing as Nebuchadnezzar, you possess Ingenuity. You receive a free Great Scientist when you discover Writing and you earn Great Scientists 50% faster.

You can train the Bowman, which replaces the Archer. The Bowman is stronger in combat than the Archer, both offensively and defensively, allowing placement in the front line. The Bowman's improved combat prowess helps ameliorate any concern that it may be quickly overrun. You need to discover the technology of Archery and you do not need a resource to build it.

You can build the Walls of Babylon, which replaces the Wall. The Walls of Babylon increase a city's defense strength by 6 points and hit points by 100. You need to discover the technology of Masonry and you do not need a resource to build it.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Game In Progress thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots and videos.

After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! , We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the two week period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after two weeks, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature)

This game runs for a month and ends Monday, 21 January 2013.

The Save can be found here.

Nice starting spot.

Does this game replace the one for Jan 1st, or in addition to it? Either way is fine.

Nice to see another DLC game! Thanks!

I know that in another thread, I mentioned about wanting to expand the victory conditions. However, I do have concerns about always leaving it open-ended. Based on past GOTM results, it seems like if any victory condition is allowed, Military VC will always be the fastest by far.

That being said, I don't mind the occasional "any VC" game. But if the emphasis continues to be on the "fastest score," I feel it is heavily in favor of Military VC.

Looking forward to the game! I'm sure this will be an interesting and useful test case!

(This particular game is Deity so that might also help stave off rushes for an easy Military win!).

Well, ultimately we only have one results table and the top 3 get the medal mentions in the OP. But once results are published you can see who "won" the fastest Science/Diplo/Culture VCs and discuss it and/or claim some praise in the results thread.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays, GotMers!

I've already decided to go for a Culture win, as that's my favorite type.

Perhaps instead of top 3, you list the top winners for each type; Fastest Domination, Science, Diplo, and Culture.

This will be fun! I will go for a diplo win, which will probably be faster for me on diety than a domination win.

Thanks for setting this up! I will do a test game first since I haven't played on diety for some time.

This is going to end badly for me, haha.

Should be fun till i get overrun and wiped out.

As Babylon an OCC game might actually work pretty well, 5 AIs on a standard map means that other civs will likely be pretty far away, letting you enough time to reach a decent tech pace to allow decent units for defence.

I will counsider an OCC game if land around is pretty bad. Of course i will not attempt a domination victory if i take this route. This is my first real attempt at Deity since last major patch.

Thanks in advance for the game, Leif :goodjob:

and i didnt even get to play gotm 50 yet... but i think i will do this first. deity looks like more fun and i will probably try to do occ if the lands allow it

Finally a deity challenge!
Good starting spot, tempting to get goddess of the sea, but probably I will go full science and no religion, maybe if I find some religion CS.
I always start with pottery/writing with Babylon and settle the gs ofc, then sailing seems obvious - and then go for diplo/science. I am also thinking on conquest but this is depending on the map.

Thanks for the surprise :)

good starting spot... this is one of the worst spots that could be... where is the production here? I hope the spots around it compensate for this. immortal is my normal diff, so i don't think i'll make something on deity... especially since i can only grow cities....but defend them with what?.... maybe we're lucky and have a natural choke point somewhere or a faith wonder so that we can buy units with it.

This seems like a real challenge. I have never played Babylon or Deity. I have just bought Babylon, I think I will play a test game first.

Are there any general tips to share for Babylon on Deity? A strong focus on science seems appropriate. The first Great Scientist should be acadamized, I presume. No early expansion also seems wise (unless it is in your own backyard). What else? Should or could the bowmen play a role? I hope I do not have to build walls (I never do), but is there any foreseeable use for the walls of Babylon? Will they act as a deterrent, for example?

Is there a prize for the fastest defeat? I've never had the bottle to play deity, can't even remember winning on immortal. And what's the betting that Alex, Oda and Ghengis are in the mix? And I thought Christmas was a time for peace on earth.

My only hope is to find a small island somewhere, settle and hang on to that for as long as possible!

I'll have to give this one a try. Despite the fact that the start looks abysmal (I'm not overly fond of sea resources and there looks to be a distinct lack of hammers), it might be worth taking up the challenge just to go "zombie apocalypse" mode and see how long you can survive the circumstances.
