News: WOTM 04 Pre-Game Discussion

Well, hello there, Mr. Praetorian Rush! Unless evil viking has removed Iron from the vicinity
The game would be too easy if Iron was easy to find, and from history I can't remember Iron ever being easy to get in GOTM's and WOTM's.

Having said that I will be going for IW first to see if there is any Iron available. If there is then my heart will double in pace because there WILL be a 'suprise' to balance the fact of easy Iron.

I guess it's always possible Gyathaar is giving this one a nicer starting spot than normal to 'compensate' for any possible harder-than-normal GOTMs that might have happened in the past, and because this is emperor level (with the improved Warlords 2.08 AI). ;) But I agree, I'd be surprised to find iron nearby. (Oh the fun of GOTMs: The speculation about the mind of the map-creator :mischief:)

btw I already see one nasty thing in store: The starting spot suggests the first few cities will be further than normal from the capital so maintenance costs are going to be a real issue in the early game, despite the Organized trait. It also suggests that EITHER the nearest Civ is a long way away OR we are going to stuggle with being boxed in early on, and be all but forced into an early war.

btw anyone thinking of building a warrior first, in anticipation of a hoped-for worker steal? I'm torn between that and the obvious advantage of early workboats + slavery.

And, anyone any experience of marathon? Is going epic->marathon just the same as going normal->epic but everything even slower, or are there additional issues to look out for?

Its easiest to just look in Assets/XML/GameInfo/CIV4GameSpeedInfo.xml
Most things takes twice as long as in epic, but some things are different... like building units only takes 33% longer than on epic.

Really, one has to be mashohistic to play on maraphon speed adn low sea level map. Really, what is with this warmonders maps and settings?

Can we have something more ballanced and nice, fun, normal speed for a change?

I like marathon games once in a while. They allow for spectacularly early finishes, especially for aggressive games, where troop movement time in relation to game speed is tremendously accelerated. For builder games, marathon also tends to lead to earlier finishes for most games (except quick cultural, as Jesusin has shown), though all the extra hittings of "enter" get a bit old as the game progresses.

If you've ever looked at the HOF boards and wondered how such early finishes were achieved, more likely than not, marathon game speed is a big part of the reason why.

I think I'll pass up this one.
I can't even start GOTM14 and SG's combined with my new DS Lite is already casuing me so much agony for me to even think of going back to ever playing a Marathon game. :D

I'm going to skip this one - just don't have enough time for marathon. Gyathaar - is this the top of your difficulty cycle, or are you going up higher next time? Just deciding which GOTM/WOTM to play.

I havent quite decided.. next one will probably be normal speed, but dont know about difficulty yet.. probably immortal, emperor or monarch

(Thought I'd posted a reply to this earlier but looking at the thread, evidently I didn't)

Thanks Gyathaar! Had a look at the file.

That's scary. Twice as long as epic!!! (I always vaguely imagined, without having ever played marathon, that it was twice as long as normal. I'll definitely attempt this GOTM but may well end up submitting a retired game if it threatens to take too long.

Trying to figure out the implications of the relatively low cost of building units, and I'm definitely intrigued by the rationalization of why Firaxis would've done that? Does the lower cost favour building more units (because they are cheaper relative to buildings) or does it favour taking advantage of the lower build time for the same number of units so you can squeeze more buildings in? I guess there's much greater potential for early war. Besides the lower unit cost, you have time to capture/raze 3 times as many cities with your axemen/etc. before the cultural defence of most cities gets so high and/or longbowmen appear, forcing you to use catapults. Even better, 3 times the unit-moves means 9 times the potential area in which you can choose to take cities, giving you greater scope to choose your opponents. OTOH I imagine there's also much greater scope to accidentally ruin your economy, perhaps before you are able to build courthouses/cottages (that could be utterly disastrous).

Question: Does the lower cost of building units apply to settlers/workers too?

Question: Does the lower cost of building units apply to settlers/workers too?

Yes, it does.

That is why Marathon is broken, provides an advantage to the player (if one has the knowledge on how to leverage it), and is mostly shunned like a red-haired step child by many civ players.

Well, I'll probably skip too. I've started a few marathon games but I've never finished one.

Quick comparison of number of turns available:
Normal 1200
Epic 660
Marathon 460

[Sorry  ]

I really look forward to this game. I will start researching bronze working and iron working. If iron is located across the river to the south, I can shut down research

I have this kinda, instinctive, intuition that tells me there's a typo in there somewhere, but I just can't place where it is. :mischief:

Hmm... what's wrong with this picture?? :mischief:

The one thing that jumped out at me when looking at the speedinfo.xml file was that iBarbPercent was 400 for Marathon, 150 for epic, and 100 for Normal. Does this imply that we can expect a much higher rate of barbs showing since this rate is more than twice that of epic (and 4X that of Normal)??

I think that would be a lower rate. I.e., the probability of a barbarian appearing, per turn, is reduced by that factor.

The iBarbPercent value has to do with how many turns has to pass before the various types of barbarians starts to appear (that is how many turns has to pass before animals are replaced with human barbs and how long it takes before the first barb cities start to spawn)
In other words.. 4 times as many turns pass before human barbs start to appear compared to normal speed.
