to the world builders out there - a test map would be much appreciated

I created the map to exactly match what is shown in the screen shot. There are two saves, one for adventurer class and one for Contender Class.

the hub is supposed to be arctic
Until Gyathaar arrives with his little worldbuilder kit ;)

The more I think of it, the more a game of "Stalin in the Middle" is the only rationale for a Warlords difficulty level.

And then imagine these adversaries on the spokes: Persian immortals, Egyptian War Chariots, Greek Phalanx, Incan Quechua, Mongolian Keshiks, Roman Praetorians, or Malinese Skirmishers. And you are at war with them all, always. And they all have easly land access to you.

And we don't have metal, horses or ivory. We might be happy to be at warlords. Might be an OCC behind walls until cats and longbows.

There's a test game for someone to make! :D

Hmmm. Building a worker first might not be my choice. If I want to get early religions, and tech towards them, there won't be much for the worker to do. But, maybe early religions won't be a good idea. If we are on the hub, I'd research to find copper, horses and iron, then build military. But, if we aren't on the hub, you would be able to build a city on the spoke as a choke point and free up production and research towards some other goal. Hmmm.

:goodjob: GreatBeyond - Your map is good , but probably starting position not situated correctly with sample - the cold weather trees indicate the starting position is at the bottom of the world, with the cold tundra above.

Ronnie1 - your test map is a good effort also :goodjob: , but you left out goodie huts. There are an average of 4-5 goodie huts per nation area and this is a disadvantage to not have the techs, units, and even workers you can pop from goodie huts at this level.

I will slightly amend your map for my own use - thanks! ;)

Except that goodie huts near to the start point are usually hand-removed for the GOTMs to take out some of the random element, presumably what greatbeyond was mimicking.

Could be... ...but, there are NO goodie huts on the map anywhere on greatbeyonds map. Otherwise, it is a good representation and correctly positioned. :)

Catherine was Warlord, Stalin is Warlord... Where's the fun?

Whoa now... I just retired from an immortal GOTM, just after 500 AD, trying to use techniques you high level guys teach us in pre-game. I can give you my saves if you want to give me a critique!

So, I'm not sure if you're a MENSA candidate or the Civ version of Rain Man, but even though I can learn a lot from you and Cactus Pete and the Laurel Club, I still like a game where I think I can kick ass. So that's where the fun is for me.

And... it's a new kind of map. For me anyway.
:)

I've been trying the test maps to get a feel for that level.

With stone you can build any wonder you want. I suggest concentrating the eng wonders (GW, Mids Hanging gardens) in one city (moscow), and the prophet wonders (oracle & henge) in the second city. I lightbulbed Theology, Metal Casting (oracle) then machinery with a GE.

Then build another city for science, etc. Maybe coordinate an attack to capture an enemy capital by the time you are ready to build the Great Library. If not, be ready to fight around 0AD to 200AD, by then you will see some enemy units in the field so have at least swords by then.

At one point I was making a sword every turn in each of my 2 big cities. Try to build just enough units or they will go out of style fast.

I did several tests to try and get the starting position correct with respect to location on the world map. The central hub appears to always be Polar/ice conditions and when generating a new map I never saw a starting position on the "Hub". I then looked at the resource indicators and used them to judge where to move the starting location. I did not delete any goody huts, and when playing up to 0 AD I popped 2 or 3 goody huts on my starting "continent. I may have inadvertently deleted horses near the starting location, because the closest I found were on another Continent http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/cwm36.gif

It looks as though this will not be a quick game, based on my first two starts as crossing the map takes quite some time.

It does appear that tech research will be very quick and wonders easy to complete before the AI does.

Dang.. I'll skip this month. Not a big AW Fan.

It still could be a non-Russian leader for ass-kicking

would anyone build the pyramid and stick w/ police state?

Police State + State Property + Bureaucracy + Slavery + Theocracy

I plan to build the Great Wall of Russia, then the pyramids. They will look nice on that desert tile just east of the starting hill.

When the time is right sure use police state. But not at first because you dont need too many units while you are building, the speed is quick and they will go obsolete. Better to use representation or monarchy. What ever lets you get bigger cities.

If you see war weariness becoming a problem, then consider changing, or change when you are ready to deliver your killing blow to other civs.

I expect a lot of players will buy Beyond the Sword and jump into playing that in 1-2 weeks, so this game should be faster to complete than normal
I hope this doesn't mean abandoning WOTM, does it?

Btw, I would certainly like if the challenger is of a higher level.

hm...my first test, the AI certainly doesn't tech like it is Warlord...they tech more like Prince level AI.

The long distances required to move around also makes it very hard to get your troops anywhere before they become obsolete thanks to the quick speed. It took me nearly the entire BC era to meet more than 1 AI.

I think warlord difficulty is good for "normal" game (which i certainly will play), but maybe challenger should be ramped upp a bit

What will happen to these GOTM when BTW comes out? will warlord be replaced with BOTH warlord and BTW or will there be 3 GOTM now (vanilla, warlord and BTW)?

sorry if this i sposted the wrong place :)

I might eat these words, but if the map is not a hub and spoke where we are in the hub, then I don't see on Warlord how we don't outtech each isolated AI, before they can trade with each other, and before they can threaten us in our infancy.

Which I suppose means that the fiendish Gyathaar HAS put us in the hub!

So R1, does your test map have us in the hub? ;)

dV

Addendum: Well, if we are in the hub, and the right early UU are arrayed against us, and we have no horses and no metal and no ivory (archers, cats and longbows only), maybe not so easy ... just how evil is Gyathaar?

dV

I think he's not that evil - at least we're not in the hub. ;) From the screenshot it is pretty clear that we're close to the northern border of the map - note the straight line of fog above the coast/ocean tiles 2N of the scout.
