Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen. This day shall henceforth be remembered as one of the most important dates of of the Europan Free Republic´s history, right up there with the overthrow of the Czar, the nuking of Istanbul and Ankara and the peace agreement with The Lady, for today I intend to resign from my position as president of this state. In the court of the Czar I have been witness to many acts of intrigue, betrayal and backstabbing, and I had to become accustomed to a byzantine/constantinopolian/istanbulous you know what I mean way of thinking to work my way up and subsequently dispose of our tyrant. I hoped that with the advent of democracy I would never have to resort to the tools of intrigue again, and boy was I wrong. If you open the Wikipedia-page about intrigue you will find a picture of me, Mr. Big, The Lady and The Glorious Leader all shaking hands with each other while holding a knife behind their backs.
It started with me wanting to get back at The Lady for the painful devastation of Turkey, but it soon became fully-fledged lust for power. When I understood the desires of the other world leaders, my first thought was how I could exploit them for my own gains. I played them out against each other, seeding distrust between the nations. Recently I promised America Incorporated support against a joint Southern-Asian invasion which I more or less made up, while at the same time assuring The Glorious Leader and The Lady that I would stand on their side if an armed conflict with America breaks out. I became giddy at the thought of snatching the British Islands and Jerusalem for me in the ensuing chaos, but then I looked in a mirror, and I saw the face of the Czar in it. I realized that I have become the very evil I wanted to destroy.
My firm grip on the running of this nation may have been necessary at the beginning, but I have full confidence that over the last decade our democracy has outgrown its need for me, and that the Europan people can stand on its own legs now. There is only one thing left to do before I resign: With the approval of Parliament I have added an amendment to our constitution that forbids the Europan Free Republic to declare war on another country unless it uses nuclear warheads, be it against us or a third nation. This is my final gift, not only for my people, but for all of the world. War is a horrendous thing, but half of the current world leaders have never experienced it personally, and thus can not really grasp the pain and suffering it brings. I grew up during the heyday of the One World Government in a suburb of Haifa. I had a relatively carefree childhood, but around my 14th birthday all hell broke loose as we heard of uprisings in other parts of the world. Say what you will about the OWG, but at least it had elegantly solved the Near East conflict that had raged the century before by uniting Jews and Muslims against a common enemy. In the resulting civil war I lost all of my family and had to fend for myself. I often switched allegiances, first fighting for the second Haganah, then ironically enough for the Southern Federation which later evolved into the Southern Empire, briefly even for the OWG remnant, until I finally had enough of that hellhole and just wanted to get away. Luckily for me I could befriend an officer of the Europan forces, back when it was still the Second European Union, while I was stationed in Damascus, and he arranged for me to get asylum in Luxembourg. For the first time in years I didn´t have to fear for my life everyday, and it was wonderful. I got to enjoy all the luxuries of a modern liberal democracy, and I loved every bit. Unfortunately it didn´t last long, as you know. The Czar´s father made himself President for life, his son later introduced an absolutist monarchy, conquered Russia, annexed Tunisia and suppressed the Benelux revolt, but at that time I was already part of his government and working my way up to one day overthrow him, and well, you all know the rest.
Now if you excuse me, after decades of struggle, intrigue and death, I just want to retire and go home, wherever that is. Maybe I´ll go vacationing in Jerusalem if The Lady allows and I can visit the Western Wall, but don´t expect me to do anything newsworthy in the future. I am, quite simply, done with politics.
