I'm about to have $500 bucks to spend on entertainment items. I have about $125.00 wrapped up in books I want from Amazon. I'd like to get a portable game system with some of the rest. Which would you recommend - DS or PSP? Factors to consider - game choice, SCREEN VISIBILITY, durability. My favorite game of all time, all systems, is Tetris for the original Game Boy - I assume that the DS is NOT backwards-compatible, but there must be a Tetris available. I like a good action game - Jak & Daxter and its ilk...

Little Help?

Should this belong in the "Other games" forum?

Definitely DS, by a very very long shot.

On-topic, I bought a PSP, just to play FFT and Disgaea. In Singapore, the PSP wins hands-down. You can see it on the buses and trains everyday. I have a very bad experience with the Nintendo GBA SP in regards to saves, so I don't want to repeat that again... :cringe:

I'd say get the machine with the games that you really want to play. ;)

the ds is bacwards compatible with only game boy advance games there is a ds version of tetris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_DS, not so sure about action games for 3d action type games youve got zelda the phantom hourglass and a port of mario 64, theres a lot of 2d action/platformers though like castlevania portrait of ruin

but if you want games like jak and daxter you might prefer psp, theres a jak and daxter spinoff- daxter and theres ratchet and clank size matters

DS, no doubt. I've had both a PSP and a DS I later sold the PSP. The DS is backward-compatible up to the GBA games. And the Tetris for the both the GBA and the DS are awesome.

The PSP tries to do everything and fails. You can play videos and music on it. But you have to buy sony's own UMD's Movies, which isn't cheap. It only holds 2GB max if you buy a Memory Stick Duo (maybe 4??). And music, You can't play music DL off of apple:mad: It's space is just to small for all these extra I hoped it would do. It has a WiFi, but you only have a D-pad and 4 buttons. SO again it sucks trying to surf the web. And the few games I had were just ok. I mean FX wise, the games looked good. But the fun factor was just blah.

Now the DS was great. I liked the games much more on the DS. Metroid prime hunters is a GREAT game. At 1st aiming with the Stylist seemed odd, but in 5 mins of the game I feel in love using that to aim. Just the whole touch screen kicks ass.

And on-line play is great. Being that the DS is selling like crazy(like 3 times more then the PSP), there is always someone to play on-line. Mario Kart and Metroid prime hunters are my most played on-line games. In Chicago, when I take the subway or the bus, I seem to see someone always playing a DS, but I only seen someone playing the PSP one time.

Also there is mod ability. The DS has it by the buckets, the PSP doesn't. I will only talk about the legal. with a cycloDS, you can fit a new SDHC 32GB (max) micro. With it you can read ebooks. what I do, and its great. And if you back up all your old games, you can put them all on one SD card, I have a 4GB one. and its so nice. I have 30 games loaded, so I don't have to carry about 30 games with me, just one mod card(which is the size of a game.

The only think the PSP has over the DS is graphics. which is kinda close to a PS2. but the DS out does the PSP in everything else.

The DS can play GBA games however I've heard a rumour somewhere that the DS-Lite-Lite (DS Mark 3 if you prefer) will remove that, allowing it to be much smaller.

I've got a DS and I love it, I mainly play it for Brain Training and Tetris but I'm planning on getting alot of old GBA games. I'd recommend getting one however I've been talking to people and they have said that the PSP is now coming into it's own over in Japan and it won't be long till it starts gaining speed over here. Certainly worth a look.

I suppose I've just given 2 answers so I'm no help, so if I had to pick......... yeah go for the DS. It's fun, plain and simple

Got a DS a month ago thanks to the fine advice from this forum, and I love it so. Already it's gotten more playtime/games than my Gameboy ever did, and I'm looking forward to games coming out for it (Panzer Tactics :D ). And I just love how simple it is for friends to join games with you.

So DS then.

Get a DS, it has a lot more good games for it than the PSP. Mario Kart DS, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Metroid Prime Hunters, New Super Mario Bros., Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy XII: RW, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Lunar Knights, Tetris DS, Trauma Center, Star Fox Command are all worthy games. Not to mention Advance Wars: Day of Ruin, FF Tactics A2, and the Final Fantasy IV remake which will be released in the next year.

You can also buy a flashcart for it that uses SD cards which allows you to play music, watch videos, read ebooks, text editor, image viewer, organizer, calculator and so on. I use an R4DS with a 4GB microSD card. :)

wow, is there ANYONE who would recommend a PSP?

and isn't the FFIV remake out in Japan now?

PSP was my initial choice for the Handheld war but Nintendo cheated so buy a DS and give them money so they can make a decent console next gen.

Only having a DS, I couldn't tell you about the PSP, however the DS has a lot of great games and I would recommend buying it.

How did they cheat?

DS Lite FTW !!

I got both a PSP and DS when they came out. The DS has some very good games (Advance War being my favorite) and the PSP didn't really have anything that excited me. PSP sat on the shelf for a long time.

However....PSP has gotten some EXCELLENT games out this year and I am spending most of my time playing it over the DS. The SRPG games like FF Tactics and Jeane D' Arc absolutely rock. The graphics are amazing and although I love my DS, I'd recommend the PSP, espcecially with God Of War coming out soon.

Also, the PSP keeps expanding it's utility. Just the other day I downloaded a radio function so I can listen to a variety of radio stations over it. Very cool. Soon it will have a GPS add-on which I'm not too sure about, but bottom line is that the PSP is a powerful unit that far exceeds the DS's capabilities.

Hehe yeah don't I know. I got FFT as well as Disgaea. I have sunk more than 60 hours into Disgaea so far - despite having played the original PS2 one years ago (200 plus hours in my one and only game).

I find FFT to be less enjoyable though - it's just hard to level up new guys (the enemies in the random battles are always based on your highest guy's level, despite him not joining the battle I think...). And if you don't rez your fallen guys, they'll be gone for good in a few turns. Difficult...

I am going to get Jeanne D 'Arc soon too. :)
