I have version 1.04 of PTW and was wondering if it has an identified GPT bug. The reason for asking is that even if an AI opponent is polite with me, and I haven't broken ANY deals (I know even a single broken deal kills your rep), why I can't trade for GPT.

The AI won't give me GPT until the late middle ages, sometimes the early industrial age. They might be willing to pay 400 Gold for a tech, yet if I ask for 1 GPT (total value 20 Gold), my advisor tells me "They will never accept this deal", or my favourite "They will probably be insulted by this deal". So they'd rather pay 400 gold for a tech than 20 gold, I don't get it.

Keep in mind when answering this....

1. I haven't broken any deals with anyone.
2. I haven't had a war with anyone.
3. I haven't ordered anyone out of my land.
4. The civ I am trading with is polite.

Is it a bug? Or am I not doing something right? Or won't they do GPT deals until late middle age, early industrial age, no matter what?

I not a bug, just that the AI doesn't have the money to pay the gpt.... Even 1gpt. What kind of is a bug is that the AI won't accept a deal that involves gpt if it doesn't make enough to cover it.... Even if it does mean it's wiping from the face of the world.

The AI won't/can't make a gpt deal if it doesn't have a positive gpt cashflow. Early in the game, the AI's often don't have a lot of gold - lump sum or gpt.

I don't get it. If they have 100+ gold, then why wouldn't they go 1 gpt? They'll give me a lump sum payment 10x the value I ask for in GPT, but they still won't go GPT. That's messed up. And you can't say it's in case they rush build stuff, because early on, in despotism, it's blood and bones.

I think the AI won't trade gpt if it's not producing that much gpt. If you were producing only 3 gpt would you give 2 of it away in a deal? Prolly not.

I would if I could get a tech that's worth 400 for 200. Who wouldn't. That said, do you guys find the same thing? Do you find it hard/impossible to get the AI to deal for gpt until late middle age, eraly industrial age?

I have a problem with it.

If the AI has 0 gold in its treasury and +5 gpt income, it can make a gpt deal with you.
If it has 50,000 gold in its treasury and 0 gpt income or -1 gpt income it CANNOT make a gpt deal with you.
It's programmed that way.
The AI's tend not to run large gpt budgets, so it's necessary to check with them frequently so you can catch them on a turn when one of their deals has just ended and they have some gpt to deal with. If you miss that turn, chances are he'll have made a deal by the next turn.

In the earlier version of civ3, you can get gpt deals in the ancient times. It became sort of an exploit that if you can bankrupt the AI in the ancient period, you already won the tech race game. Althought it sounds logically to give 1gpt compare to 400gc, I can exploit that easily by making multiple trades draining off the gpt first in seperate deals before taking the 400 gold.

Nearly everything is said. For completeness let me add, that your reputation does not effect the AI willingness to give you gpt, it only affects the AI willingness to accept your gpt.

Also please note, that attitude "polite" is different from "reputation". A civ may even be gracious towards you, but not accept gpt deals, because you broke a feal 5000 years ago with another civ. :(

One trick i find fun is if I have a gpt deal that will end in a few turns with a civ and I offer them a gpt deal and take all their gold. This generally ends with them declaring war on me to break the deal... hehe, and I get a few civs to help me clean their clock.
