"No Leaderheads" Option to speed late-game diplomacy requests.

Should there be a "No 3D Leaderheads" option so to improve late game performance?

Never saw / don't mind.

But if they put this option, would be nice if you could change this option during a game, and not only out of it.

seeing as I only have 384mb of RAM, this option would be most useful

currently I have to stop all games by 1850 as every turn takes 3-5 minutes to complete, any leaderhead or World map update is painful

(NB - new computer imminent)

Yeah... I want the no leaderheads option even though I just ordered the best Precision Workstation money can buy :).

This is a good idea, Civ is such a memory pig, you can tell when it has to re-arrange the deck chairs to pop up a "Change to Feudalism, it's my favorite civic!" as if someone gives a hot damn...

If you play with a large map and lots of Civs, even a 2GB machine will slow. Trust me... I know. Just upgraded to 4GB to reduce this. Will be happy to play a game lag free, if they can get the fracocta patch out...

I have an uber computer. So I don't really care. But I guess I could try to upload a static images LH mod? Wouldn't take too long...

Uber computer or not, I've seen it - 3.26Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB and 7950GT card, STILL see it on huge maps mid-late game.

I was going to say the same thing as mr felony. Not only does it take forever still with no leaderheadds the entire game, but it also crashes at times when the leaderhead pops up and someone wants to trade world maps or something stupid like that.

I am playing on my laptop(a bad one actually) and i have no problem.

Obviously you have a bad computer.

Obviously you are... well. I have a great PC, yet I still must wait a few seconds (1-2, not 30 of course). I don't mind waiting a few seconds every turn and such for units moving because, well that IS the game. But waiting for leaderheads is a drag. Especially since I play with lots of civs every game and there can be several each and every turn wanting something.

But the patch, whenever it comes, does seem to remedy this somewhat in not playing the introductory animation each and every time you talk to someone (presumeably it is only meant to play the first time you meet someone in any given game?).

Nevertheless, an option to turn of the animations, or lower their quality, or something, for those who do have lower end specs would be a healthy addition to the game.

^^ Thanks for your support everyone. Us crap-top users appreciate your concern for our speedy civ4 experience :).

I started a thread a Poly awhile back requesting an option to turn off leader head animations. That means you could tell at glance who you are talking to, but don't have to have the long lags while waiting for the animation to load. To a "no leaderhead" option, no. To a "no leaderhead animation" option, yes.

Well, technically, it is possible to have static LH's. This is a method.
MAKE A MOD
This is what you must do.
Copy all the LH folders from Civ IV, Warlords, and BTS into one folder (but keep the files in their own folder), italicized means make a new folder. Bolded is where you put all the edited files.
My Games/BTS/MODS/____(mod name)/Assets/Art/Leaderheads
NOW,
go into every single little LH folder and remove the:
_____(leadername)idle_*______(attitude)
files and keep any .dds files, ___(leadername).nif and ___(leadername)NOSHADER.nif, ____(leadername).kfm, and _____(leadername)BG.nif/kf.
the only thing you should remove in the MOD(don't mod the epic game) are the animation files that I mensioned earlier:
_____(leadername)idle_*______(attitude) (.kf)
NOTHING ELSE. And the LH's should appear animated, but not moving.

[EDIT] It really is simple, but I don't want any of you guys to screw up your game. I could upload one, but only if someone here requests it.

Did anyone miss the mod for this that already exists? ;)

I know that there is a mod that gives ststic leaderheads, but I'd prefer an option that I could turn on when I know I'll have afew diplo screens opening in the next few minutes (such as when I get a new tech that I want to trade or the AI wants.)

Ditto. I'd like to have it on at the beginning of the game but I'd like to turn it off later when my crowded map eats up all the RAM and CPU time necessary for launching the leaderhead graphics.

What I really want is a "Refuse to Talk" flag I can set on certain civs so that they cannot initiate a dialog with me. Vassals of other civs keep pestering me with ludicrous trade requests.

Now THAT would be a nice feature. Though, balance-wise, I don't think it would work. It would be exploited in ways such as only talking to any of the civs when YOU want to, or to avoid having to deny war requests / stop trading requests.

Perhaps if it gave a negative modifier when you choose to "refuse talking" to another civ, along with having a set amount of turns where you had to remain in it before you could talk again - those could make it work well.

Because the main idea is that you don't want to be pestered by backward civs or little vassals - the diplomatic penalty may not be that important.

On Topic:

This option would be nice if it helps people out with their gaming experience.

Personally though, I would never use it. I would lose even more of the immersion when I sit down to play against my historical opponents... and the 3D leaderheads are so nicely done and charismatic.

I have a pretty good system but I still prefer to play on standard sized maps with only 7 other civs. You get a much more "personal" experience with every civ and the game runs really well. I can't stand even the slightest lag or drop in framerate, and there's no way I'm waiting more than a few seconds between turns (unless I'm being attacked of course, then I'll sit back and enjoy the show).

If the game performance is THAT bad, why not just play on smaller maps with less civs? I've heard of people talk about waiting minutes between turns, or that they never finish a game because their huge maps crash by a certain time later in the game!

Huge maps with tons of civs may feel more epic, but in my opinion, they're not worth the sacrifice in performance and game "playability".
