No Treasure for Pirates

A bit of writing and role playing is ok for me. For me this game is anyway more about the fun, the adventure, etc. like a good Errol Flynn movie...

So you are putting the band back together, eh? Sounds like big fun. What kind of music are you playing? Friends of mine had a band that specialized on 60s stuff. Cool sound...

I would be glad to swap you France for Spain. I wanted to be last and ALL players happy with their choice(s).

Spain of course is the "Main" (Spanish Main) Character of this scenario and will be rich with Treasure, Diplomacy, Strategy and Highs and Lows, meaning you successfully shipped treasures or you lost ships.

We MUST be satisfied with our choice(s) because this game is all about those shipping lanes and those treasures and we cannot want to quit if an upset occurs.

Sorry if it sounded as if I was complaining. I was merely stating the fact, so no need for swapping factions, I am happy with Spaniards.

I am in Belgrade, Serbia GMT+1.

As for the "writing", my skills in English do not go that far to allow for some exquisite contribution, but I'll try to put 'caramba' or something like that from time to time.

Well I have enough instruments for a band but no, I'm a solo act, a wannabe composer, My sound is a fusion of Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Perfect Circle and Dubstep. Low octave keyboards(2, soon to be 3), 2 Bass guitars (4 & 5 string) and 6 string electric guitars now a large set of drums

Lanzelot I have 2 emails address for you. a gmx.de and sap.com. Which should I use?

Also did you happen to notice the actual victory conditions of this scenario?

Would you both send me a email to eclipse4449 at gmail dot com please

I noticed that Spanish capital city has no access to woods.

Was it an intention or an omission?

The gmx one must be my wife's, which I used once when I wasn't able to login to my own. But that was like 5 years ago... nowadays please always use the sap one.

That would be a question for the original scenario designer... Except for the "Landmark tiles" for the other nation's capitals I didn't change the map. (Cadiz already had two LMs, so no changes here.)

Here is again, how I would distribute the nations:
1. Player: Spain
2. Player: England + Peglegs
3. Player: France + Swashbucklers
Portugal, Netherlands and Undead Pirates set to AI

It has been a long time since I setup a Civ3 game, so is this the play order? Spain England Peglegs France Swashbucklers? If so Jarovid will play the very first turn, or do I set it up?

Lanzelot did you spot the Victory Conditions?

When do we want to launch?

Since all other capital cities in Europe have access to wood and I need wood to build some ships that can be made in capital only, I believe it is omission, and wood should be added to my capital before we start.

Yes you must be able to build ships, that will be fixed

Regarding "Woods": ah, now I see what you mean... (I thought you were talking about the terrain type, like "Grassland", "Hill", "Forrest"...) So we should probably start a little test game with Spain and double-check that! I remember in the test game I played back in 2010 (as England), I met lots of Spanish ships..., so Spain should be able to build them. But that was the original version of the scenario, before many people did all those changes and fixes, so it could well be that the Woods ressource got deleted by accident.

Regarding Victory Conditions: I was also very suprised when I noticed that the scenario has the "Spaceship Victory" enabled, so I looked into that in a bit more detail: the scenario designer has changed this quite a bit as follows: instead of "spaceship parts", there are "famous treasures" that can be built by the Pirate nations. Like "Blackbeard's Treasure", "Capt'n Morgan's Treasure", etc. There are 12 of them (replacing the standard "spaceship parts" of the unmodified game, plus two more). But they are really expensive (like 1000 shields each, if I remember correctly). The Pirate nation that first builds 5 of them, achieves the "Treasure Victory".

Haven't tested, whether this really works as intented. But as this is going to be a fun game, I would leave it in. We'll find out more about it as we go...

Regarding move order: as the game host, just put yourself in the first spot, Eclipse. Otherwise the game setup will become a bit complicated, if I remember correctly. The move order should not really be important for this game.

Got a virus, a black screen and a cursor, attempts with "safe mode" cmd prompts failed. Wife dropping at shop Monday and hopefully I can pick it up Friday

I noticed two things that are very likely wrong:

- English workers are building railroads
- Dyes are not shown in luxury box in city view, even when connected to the city

Ok, I gave Cadiz a Lumber tile and double-checked that all 4 capitals have access to all 4 resources: horses, lumber, iron and saltpeter.

No idea though about the other two things:
- There are two types of worker units in this game, the ordinary worker (available for Spain, Portugal, England, France and Netherlands) and the pirate worker (available for Peglges, Swashbucklers and Undead). Both of them have the "Build Railroad" flag enabled, so if you saw an English worker building railroads, then all 8 nations should be able to do it.

The worker job "Railroad" has as prerequisites only "Coal and Iron", no tech prerequisite. And the Coal resource also has no tech prerequisite?! But it shouldn't matter: I checked the entire map with CivAssist, and there is not a single resource of coal anywhere, so it should be impossible to build railroad for everyone. Are you sure they really built railroad in your game? Perhaps you mistook some other animation for "building railroad"?!

- Dyes: no idea here either: I compared the settings for dyes with the ones for incense and spices, and noticed absolutely no difference?!

But this is not the only thing that's strange: if I open the map with CivAssist, it says "Lumber", where ever there is a Dyes resource, and "Dyes" where ever there is a Lumber resource?! In any case, I can confirm that dyes do not show up in the Luxury box. Someone with more experience in modding will have to sort this one out...

It also appears that some resources are not tradable via sea, while others are. (Plymouth has different strategic & luxury resources in its box than the overseas towns.)

I know, that this "not tradable via ocean" thing is done in order to prevent the powerful units (Ship of Line etc.) from being built in the colonies. Same concept as is also used in the Age of Imperialism scenario. Perhaps the dyes not showing up where they should is a "side effect" of this mechanism? I'd say we just live with it and get started.

Yes, I am certain this is railroad, zero move points spent when railroads used.

I agree this is not obstacle to start playing. We simply do not build railroads, even if we can, and we don't paint our clothes. :)

I could agree with this as a "Rule" although the benefit of a Railroad would be best used by you, having such a huge territory whereas everyone else's territories are scattered. This is my opinion, we should here Lanzelot's then a conformation Jarovid if Rule will stand.

An example I could come up with is if France "unloaded" a few ship in one area and waited for you to respond to the invasion force and then unloaded other ships in areas where you moved your units from. That could be devastating.

@Lanzelot
Thank you for Championing this game! You're the best!

Ps isn't it zero movement points in your own land and a reduce movement cost for non-ownership use?

I have some news. First my family Holiday starts 2/5/16 to 5/5/16 and a rather life changing decision was made that I will be changing employment soon, other the next few months I will be traveling less and less as I transion out of being an over the road truck driver to a nice desk job and a fixed work schedule which I haven't had in more than a decade and last I am currently recovering my laptop from a terminal virus, so I now has a fresh install but still lacks my game installs

No railroad as a "Rule" would be fine for me. But I still don't get it, how it is possible to build it anyway?! Perhaps it's a bug and the AI can build it without coal?! If you have a .sav file where someone (either human or AI) is building rails, I would like to take a look at it.
