No wonder Succession Game: Slowboat to Alpha Centauri

Short period of Golem's presidency finished. Before the whole history is published and new president elected, I put down some short comments about my period.

When I accept the power, we were fighting with everybody except of Babylonians. I tried to make peace - but no one wanted it.:o

The worst thing happened in my second year - French destroyer sunk our transport with two freights. Cowards!  I decided to make our trade save. First I make everybody to sign cease-fire - after I made some rebelions in their cities - everybody has signed. So my rule was without wars. Second I developed flight and radio and start to make Airports. Delivery of goods is fast and pleasant now. I hope that fighters will be impossible for AIs for a long time yet.
:p

We have the same treasury - I did not spent too much money, so micromanagement of cities is a bit nightmare for me. I let it for my succesor. I have rushed only some airports, aquaducts, sewer systems, universities.

Good news - 10 turns - 10 more techs. I love stealing techs from AIs. 11th Rocketry is developed from 95 percent. Space flight is near.

LOG and SAV follow tommorow.

Take your time. I was just making sure it wasn' t my turn because on the original list, I followed Elephant.

I was taking Old n Slow's place, who is the "top of the order". Let's leave the next to him (if he's not gone too long) to see if he changes number of turns. SpaceFlight might be coming up soon too.

Not actually fighting against anyone but Carth navy (beat back the troops around St Louis). I tried CFs too...

Cute. I was too busy rushbuying SuperHighways and MassTransits. Did you get Espionage after Computers?

So my rule was without wars.

You mean without major bloodshed...

Beware the tech theft...

Except for the "rebellions"?

I knew they had Gravity; I was avoiding that till we got Computers. I forgot the French developed Electronics.

For my succesor – there is transport with diplomat near Babylonian border – I would buy some city (Way2Babylon) and make there an airport – but it is on you.

11 techs, and progress on a 12th. 4 off-path (Esp, Gen, Amp, The), but Espionage is VERY useful and Theology helps the Cathedrals get back up to 3 content (taking Communism caused me quite a bit of happiness fiddling). When does Old n Slow get back?

O&S said he would be out all week. I'll start taking a look at the save, but I doubt I'll play much in the next day or so...I'll be soaking up the best 36 hours in American sports (Go Terps!). I think my turn is coming up in the D+3 game (Once Viking posts his file, then I follow Golem there as well?) soon, so we'll see how things go. If he gets back soon, he can go ahead, but I'll try to prepare in case he's not.

While the men of learning play with their quill pens the city defenses stay as thin as parchment. BUILD A BIGGER ARMY !!! :D

I notice that the barbs have chosen to visit our main island and it is almost undefended. The crusader and dragoon there may be able to kill the invaders but that is far from certain. One possibilty is to send some units on a suicide mission to block the barbs to prevent them from reaching our cities next turn. This would make it necessary to rush buy some units (howeitzers/armor) on the main island to attack the barbs next turn. A ship might also be nice to sink the barbarian ship. If the barbs cannot be prevented from reaching a city we must spend most of our cash if we want to pay them for not capturing a city but that is something I'd like to avoid if possible.

Otherwise nice progress and it would be fun to start destroying the Mongols now :D. At least I think we should try to get at least one city on the Mongol island to grow to size 12+ via WLTP.

However, now that we have spies we can steal techs several times from each city although the odds of success decrease with the number of tech thefts. Veteran spies are valuable for this so maybe we should sabotage some enemy units to get these.

We are Supreme, so if we destroy the Mongols we will suffer increased beaker costs. They have also been pretty good trading cities, demanding a fair amount of what we have available. The Babylonians would be better, but they are harder to get to...

A short stint in Communism could allow several dozen Vet Spies.

Well, we wouldn't need to completely destroy the Mongols, leaving one city for some time would be a possibility. I'm usually too lazy for highly detailed management late in the game and like using brute force (nukes are fun :D).

Communism is also a possibility to get veteran spies but would slow us down a bit. I don't know if it would be more effective than demo/sabotaging to get veteran spies since we would need to build roughly two times more spies as a democracy. One additional benefit of veteran spies is to use industrial sabotage to delay completion of the Manhattan project. Which reminds me - sooner or later we are going to have to build lots and lots of SDIs.

Great work, great work, great work -- hats off to Elephant & Golem.

I'll go ahead & take my turn tonight (since Tim was nice enough to wait for me) -- Looks like 5 turns each may be the way to go.

I was getting ready to go on this game when Golem posted on the D+3 game so I played it instead, figuring you'd be back soon enough.

Save for now, log tomorrow.

Made some progress in the direction(s) I wanted to go, but... no where near enough.

Spent a lot of the treasury, only at the end was able to make some of it back.

We have 49 Cities, 71 techs -- about 2--3x the cities and +10 techs over the competition. Half of them know Fundy, the only tech that we don’t have (a nice to have -- post launch perhaps.) Three skulls, 35M Pop. $7K in funds (too good to be true!)

Move a few citizens, buy a couple of temples & a cathedral. Smack the local barbs (lose a crook in process -- hmmm upon review, we note a significant number of obsolete troops.) Speaking of review -- we could use a few more temples, markets and a number of cathedrals + for growing… (What? no offshores? no barracks either -- we might a want at least a couple. Also want a few more airports.)

1850 (1) (I have notes on 24 city events for this turn -- We Loves +/-, stuff grown, etc. -- after a while the notes per turn on these items shrank, even though the events continued to happen.) (French break the cease fire -- attacked Rifle who not only survived, but is awarded a veteran ribbon.)

Discover Rocketry, opt for Robotics over CA & Recyc (although we may want some recyc in the near future -- MT doesn’t seem to be enough without Hoover’s.) We allow our alpine in Leo’s Canal to go out for some exercise & he comes back with 150 bounty from a barb leader. Found Bermuda west of Lisht; found Reno SE of Las Vegas Chapel. No Wow Salt (n) to Buto = 270.

1851 (2) -- (Only 13 city events worth noting -- a few offshores spring up. Pop = 37M. Hides (n) Muddy to Buto = 388. (We lose a transport to a French Ironclad that had JUST loaded 2 engineers and a dip to leave French lands (oh well.))

1852 (3) -- Discover Robotics, opt for Space Flight over 5 other techs. (Eleven noted city events, am noticing that I’m not even writing all of these down anymore let along transposing them over.) Dye (d) Old River to Cartenna = 59; Hides (n) Muddy to Cartenna = 340; Hides (n) Cardiff to Cartenna = 304. found Middle Obs. toggle to 1.3.6. Babs sneak attack, smacking a transport & dip; French cav dies vs our Rifle.

1853 (4) (10 listed city events -- again fewer than actual) Discover Space Flight, opt for Plastics over 6 other techs. (Only after this choice do I realize that maybe we shouldn’t research Plastics and other spaceship techs so hard (for a while) -- we’ll see.) Pop = 38M. Toggle back to 7.3.0. (Well,… the funds are between $1K & 2K -- a number of offshores and airports are now up & running -- it would be nice to replace at least some treasury for the next player.) Babs complete the Cure for Cancer, French change to JSB, others abandon.

Mongols slay two units in Khan, as that front heats up. We counter attack & mop up 2 cavs & a cannon, also put shields towards a (non-vet) tank. Talk to the Amerks -- Trade techs (no, we have nothing interesting (only a half dozen techs that they don’t have!)) but they’ll sell us Fundy for $200 (? I’ve never seen a tech so cheap -- I’m so in shock that I buy it before I realize what I’ve done!) but the conversation continues -- we offer a gift (tech) and they want Computers, (backup choice is Space Flight…hmmm what a difficult choice…) well we give them Space Flight. Maybe after they finish with JSB , they’ll help map the world. Try talking with the Babs, French (both think that we just chatter on) and Egyptians (after a no for 1000K, declare war. So we buy an Egypt Cav (303) , slay an E dragoon & cannon (& now vet.))

Silk (d) BP to Swan = 571 (Hmmm looks like an optimal RR to me!) hut = Rifle (Abydos) Cloth (n) Cardiff - Lisht = 320; Hides (n) N sy to Lisht = 208 (want the arrows, and the payoffs are about the same as for Buto.) Buy an E Eng (None) for 404.

1854 (5) (A number of tech swaps among the ai, but not Space Flight (yet.)) Pop = 39M. Tank in Mongol lands smacks a cav & becomes vet. Oil (d) Cannae to Beaver Dam = 1307 (now that’s more like it! -- looks like the airport to airport payoff justifies the cost of both airports!) Sell temple in Issus as the city relocation plan is almost complete. Rush an airport in Dinas (the truck with demanded goods is in BP.) Buy an E frigate (None.)

Game saved.

Notes -- I was hoping that the Americans might switch from JSB to Apollo -- our other strong contenders are busy with bad attitudes toward us -- so this might take some nervous time before fruit happens.

On a side note: I've been playing my own NoWonders game just to learn some things, and I feel sort of like I did when I discovered One City Challenge - doing without the Wonders forces you to better understand the basic mechanics, particularly unhappiness issues. Worth a try...
